“Lost travellers cheques - 3 months later AMEX could...”

written by Keith412 on 21/05/2016

I purchases travellers cheques, followed all the procedures. Used them to pay for something so had to write payees name and countesign them. They were lost in the post, which a I reported. The Customer services rep was awful, zero service and blamed me for signing them. Ermmm how else am I supposed to pay or cash them. 3 months late no replacement cheques I cannot even get a response from Amex to m 7 recorded letters, 3 of them to MD Rafa Marquez. Have sent copies of ID, purchase record, bank details. Nothing. No one at AMEX gives a damn.

“Can't even get them back in my home country”

written by Jenkinsfr64 on 08/06/2014

I'm a German and I was going to China for 1 month. I asked my Bank for a good method to get money in a foreign country and they recommended these traveller Cheques. They were completely useless because nobody in China accepted them. Now I'm back in Germany and wanted to get my money back, that's 2 weeks ago now. Obviously I can't even get my money back in my homecountry, I am annoyed.

“worst experience ever”

★☆☆☆☆

written by jerrys1 on 29/08/2013

I lost my American Express travelers checks and it was a horrible, truly horrible ordeal to get the matter resolved. I think it would be easier to get someone off of Texas Death Row than to get their travelers checks replaced etc... I spoke with one man 30 minutes, another one same questions again. another 30 minutes. there were times I was assured someone would return my phone call and no one did. I sent them back countless faxed papers, it was a total nightmare. i have used their travelers checks for years, NEVER AGAIN. the entire experience was a truly horrible, horrible nightmare. several times they said they could mail me a check to my home or wire the money to my bank although i told them i am out of state and need the money NOW. i called them on a Saturday and got my money on a Wednesday.

“Never again”

★☆☆☆☆

written by JRPcanada on 22/07/2013

I am Canadian. Practically impossible to use in Mexico. Hardly accepted in a country that has so much tourism; not even the banks want them. I decided to cash them in the USA and travelled to Texas, where I still found enormous resistance even at the banks. Whenever I phoned customer service, they lied to me. When I checked for online information at the AMEX website, the addresses that AMEX listed as their offices turned out to be some banks, Walmart stores, and HEB supermarkets which did not cash the cheques. There is not a single AMEX office in Mexico, and now after this horrible experience I believe that there may not be any either in the USA. I will never use AMEX again.

“AE travelers cheques USELESS in Europe”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Mike.Ca on 01/05/2013

I have been recently in Europe in vacation for 3 weeks. So, trying to not have too much cash, my wife and I have bought AE travelers cheques for a value of 3,000 Euros. And that was the moment when the pain started and when we’ve decided to never do that again. Most of the businesses in Europe do not accept the AE travelers cheques. To get the euros one must pay a fee! The fee is from 1.5 to 5 %!! Of course the 1.5 % is just on web sites and not in reality. We have ended up paying 90 Euros to get the money (@ 3 %)!! And this is after we have paid at the bank the price for buying – usually is a 10% difference between buying and selling. Final words: do not use AE travelers cheques! They are useless and with huge fees, at least in Europe.

“Less secue than cash”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 20/11/2012

I recently brough £500 of travellers cheques. I lost them in the park playing with kids in Paris. I then phonned to report them lost but was told to phone in the morning for a replacement. I did so but was told that they needed a copy of all my id wage slips. Luckly I had these stored on my netbook so I sent them. I was then told "We think you left them at the hotel have a look and let us know you can then use them" I had to get money payed into ny bank account to survive. If I would not of had friends I would have been a sinle girl on the streets with a baby. Six months later and I am still out if pocket. No where to complain too. The level of spoken English by amex is useless. My insurance company would have covered for cash but not cheques as they are covered by amex. Only carry cards and cash unless you want to lose everything and possibly end up on the streets.

“Pathetic, dismal, can't be exchanged and no contact number”

★☆☆☆☆

written by DisgustedJoe on 23/08/2012

What a bunch of pathetic cowboys, but what else can you expect from an American organisation. I tried to change Amex TC's in the Canaries. None of the banks I tried would change them. I tried calling their 'emergency' contact number only to find the line isn't connected, there's just an automated message saying the line isn't in use. How wonderful. When I arrived home I tried contacting Amex on several occasions, no-one was interested in the slightest. Eventually I was pointed to a website where I could complain, but not by email. I had to print out a form, complete it and post it to Amex in the US at my expense (about £2). 4 weeks later they replied saying they were sorry for my problems and they gave me a number to call - the same number that I'd already tried and still didn't work. Amex finally changed the website but now you have to enter the country into a box to get the relevant number, but this isn't possible as nothing can be entered into the box, so they still can't be contacted. This must be their get quick rich scheme - sell a bunch of cheques that you can't exchange anywhere. When you get home take them back for a refund but you still lose the commission. What a joke. AVOID AND DON'T BUY THEIR PRODUCTS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES - THEY CLAIM TO BE ACCEPTED ALL OVER THE WORLD BUT NO-ONE WANTS THEM, UNLESS MAYBE BY ANOTHER AMEX OFFICE.

I would never purchase American Express Travelers Cheques again, I had my Hotel room Robbed in Mumbai In India while on a three week Holiday American Express were a Nightmare,I was interviewed on My Mobile Phone on The street and questioned like a criminal the person dealing with my Case could not speak English and contradicted me at every opportunity, Four weeks later and I still haven't had a refund, My solicitor Is now dealing with it,I must also say American Express did absolutely nothing to help but just put obstacles in my way to avoid paying out

I dont Often write reviews however on the occasion I felt I must warn People of what to Expect and not have to go through what I have over the last four weeks, take a cash passport with two cards and have them separate its a lot easier and safer and if you were unlucky enough to lose both at least your money would be safe.

When they change the system they close your card down and promise you a refund but guess what you dont get the money and chasing it is a dead end. Its the principle that counts not the amount

“Would never, ever, buy American Express traveller...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 20/07/2009

Would never, ever, buy American Express traveller cheques again. My daughter lost hers; American Express, with a useless call centre in the Phillipines, offered no alternative other than a refund to our home address in four weeks time. Told me that they wouldn't send replacement cheques out. Spoke to someone else later who said they would send cash only out. spoke to someone even later who said they would maybe send traveller cheques, but maybe not. My daughter is in Europe so it shouldn't be a problem to arrange replacements. So something that should be easy to sort out is actually proving very problematic and negates the usefulness of taking traveller cheques in the fist place. Call centre dreadful. I was told today that American Express don't actually own the traveller cheque arm any more - maybe that's why the service is so bad.

Agree completely re useless American Express. My son had his travellers cheques stolen in France last week and although they validated his claim immediately, it was almost impossible for him to pick up new cheques. For 29 hours, he was sent around Post Offices and was ridiculed at every attempt to get his cheques, whilst I spent literally hours on the phone to AmEx.

After 29 hours, they told me it appeared they no longer had a relationship with La Poste (how could they not know???) and the best they could do was to send him money versus Western Union! When I ask if they would cover his money in case it got stolen, they said no and got very irritated when I asked why had I bothered to buy the chques in the first place if they couldn't offer the service they claimed?

In the end, my son and his father who had flown to Paris by this time to get things sorted had to get themselves to CDG airport where there are 8 AmEx offices now - but no other offices or partners elsewhere in France it seems.

Never ever again will we use American Express for anything...

written by wgaffney on 23/08/2006

After all the sales bumf about the American Express Travellers Cheque Card, I was totally disappointed in the administration. The card was rejected at shops. I was cut off when contacting the help line by telephone from Spain. The bonus Euros were not added to my account as promised. After spending hours on the internet and telephone on my return to Scotland, trying to register for an account statement, I was told there was a fault on the system. This does not yet appear to be rectified.

“We used the American Express Travellers Cheque Card...”

★★★★☆

written by durbil on 20/08/2006

We used the American Express Travellers Cheque Card when we visited the states last year (2005) and found it to be an extremely efficient way of carrying large amounts of foreign currency without the fear of losing it. We found it easiest to withdraw money to last us 2 - 3 days at a time to minimise the charges that were applied for cash withdrawals, although a lot of shops (most shops that take AMEX credit cards) in the US will also accept the travellers cheque card, so you could also use it directly to make purchases.

We kept notes of how much we had withdrawn, so we had a rough idea of our balance on a daily basis, but we did phone customer services towards the end of our holiday to ensure that we weren't way off. It would be helpful if you could check the balance at a cashpoint, although all you need to do is find an internet cafe and log on to check the balance.

Overall, I was initially sceptical that it would be accepted by ATM's or businesses, but this proved to be unfounded, and we are using it again this year.

“Even if they reject your purchase, because your phone...”

written by jbarton on 16/08/2006

Even if they reject your purchase, because your phone number entered doesn't match your credit card records or some other reason, American Express place a hold on your Travellers Cheque card. You cannot get them to cancel the hold. They will not stop a purchase on a debit card. They will not resolve your problems on the phone. They will not sell you a card in person at an office. The fact that AmEx won't let you purchase them over the phone tells you that they really aren't putting any effort into providing customer service.

Hello. I speak to the American Express UK Customer Service call centre frequently... they're in Brighton, UK.

They don't sell the card at their Amex offices, but they do have partnerships with high street travel agents; that's where I got my second card. I got my first card over the phone.

“Like the previous reviewer, I was sold the American...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by ejjj on 15/08/2006

Like the previous reviewer, I was sold the American Express Travellers Cheque card by Thomsons. The added $30 made the rate good at the time of transaction, and I was told all the plus points. I was given a sealed enveloped which detailed all the "bad" points and told to telephone after 2 hours to activate the card. With a promise of the $30 being added 3 - 5 working days after the card purchase, so we thought we had made a good decision.

In San Francisco, all the ATM machines charged at least $2 to withdraw any amount of cash, so we drew the maximum (about $450), then we were stung by an added charge by AMEX of $2.50 for the withdrawal.

As we had a laptop, we were able to track the account. We knew nothing about pending transactions. Most are OK and charge to the card exactly what you have signed for, but beware of petrol stations and Hard Rock Cafe. We were charged more than our transaction. Although this was soon rectified by Hard Rock Cafe, it made us nervous, thinking we had more money than we actually had, and it could incur a charge for going overdrawn. Without a laptop, how could you possibly know what has been debited? We had purchased $39.99 of petrol, but an additional $99 was levied. The blurb on pending transactions states this will be refunded up to 7 working days afterwards, and in our case, it was exactly 7 days... On the day we were coming home!!! Thank goodness we'd got a credit card and hadn't relied entirely on the Travellers Cheques card. Also, the $30 was only credited on the day before our last day (after nearly 2 weeks).

There is no way you can e- mail AMEX! We tried phoning from USA, but that also incurs yet another cost.

All in all, what seems like a good idea proved to be very costly, especially as the pound rose against the dollar. AMEX should not allow pending transactions to be more than has been signed for, as you cannot possibly keep track of your account.

“I got sweet-talked into signing-up for the American...”

★★☆☆☆

written by The Daddy on 03/08/2006

I got sweet-talked into signing-up for the American Express Travellers Cheque Card by a girl behind the till when I was changing my currency at Thomsons. I was going to exchange my Sterling for Euro's in a straight cash transaction until the girl told me of a special deal they had going on the AMEX Travellers Cheque Card.

I was told that I could sign-up for this card, the card was free and that I would have an extra 30E added to the card once I had completed the sign-up procedure. Great, or so I thought, 30E for doing diddly squat plus I would get the peace of mind and security of a travellers cheque without the hassle of changing them over or getting shafted on the exchange rate.

The sign-up process, despite taking an eternity in the travel agents, is pretty painless. Once you have sorted out the details with the travel agent you then simply have to call the AMEX hotline to register the card, this only takes a few miuntes and a simpleton could do it with ease.

The problems began for me when I touched down on foreign soil. The immediate problem I discovered with this card is that you can't check your balance - so you have to take it in good faith that the correct amount has been attributed to the card and that the 30 free Euro's have been added as well. It may also pose a problem for people who lose track of how how much they withdraw whilst holidaying as they have no way of going back to check their ongoing balance.

I was also told by the travel agent that I would be charged 1 Euro per withdrawal, obviously if you want to withdraw small amounts over a 2 week period then this could soon tot up. A friend who also has this card was told he would be charged 1.50 Euro per transaction so there also appears to be something of the unknown about this. As you can't check your balance there is also no simple way of finding out which figure is accurate.

Another achilles heel of the card, as with foreign cashpoints in general, is that you can only withdraw in denominations of 10 and 20 Euro's. This led to a further problem down the line which I will address now. The free 30E I was promised was never added to my account by AMEX which meant I suffered on my final withdrawals. Believing the 30E bonus had been credited I went to withdraw 180 Euro and I couldn't do this as they hadn't credited me with my promised 30E. As a result I could only withdraw 150E.

In fairness to Amex they rectified this as soon as I rang them and added 30E to my account within the hour. However, because I withdrew the previous 150E, I could only get 20E of this as the cashpoints would not accomodate a withdrawal for a 10E note.

Sadly that left me with over 10E in my account that I couldn't spend as the Spanish shopkeepers would not accept payment on an AMEX Travellers Cheque Card. I now have little idea of how to obtain this extra 10E as these cards do not work in UK cashpoints.

Overall the prospect of a free 30E bonus is not as good as it first sounds - this is because you must write off 10E straight away because of the charges for using the card and then you must undergo the hassle of trying to get them to credit you with the aforementioned bonus payment. As you can imagine, the last thing I want to do whilst on my holiday is to ring a call centre from a payphone to try and find out what has happened to my money.

Despite the good customer service from AMEX, the negatives far outweigh the positives and as a result I can't recommend this card - I certainly wouldn't use it again based on my own poor experience. I would advise you to play it safe with regular travellers cheques or do what I usually do and take the money in cash.

If anyone knows how I can get my paws on the remaining 10 or so Euro's left on the card please leave a comment with the info!
