Good Points: very few inherited conditions in this breed.
Very beautiful, sociable and affectionate. Easy to train if you use food as a positive reinforcement (reward). Fantastic recall unless distracted by play.
Very sociable with other dogs, people including strangers and children.

Bad Points: He does pull on the collar lead at times, which is not good for beagles who have a more delicate larynx than other dogs. It has resulted in him developing a temporary cough.
He thinks that couples dining on romantic picnics in the park are merely waiters on hand to serve him free food! It has been a bit embarrassing when he's run in and stolen sandwiches in the past.
Prone to gastroenteritis as they eat all sorts of yukky stuff off the floor.

General comments: Benson is our one year old male beagle. He is the centre of our family and our perfect dog! We have been able to walk him off the lead in open spaces since he was 10/11 weeks old and his recall is always immediate and consistent unless he's playing with another dog (in which case i cannot blame him.) Whilst he does love to smell everything, he has never tracked a scent and disappeared. He loves children and is happy to be stroked and tickled even if the children are a little rough with him. He is the most sociable dog in our area, wanting to play with every dog he meets (it's the pack hound in him i guess) He also has an exceptional memory for people and dogs he likes and always greets them with an excited squeak. He is extremely intelligent and was very easy to train too. I learned early on that Beagles are particularly motivated by food which enabled me to teach him a wide variety of new skills and tricks. Having owned two different breeds of dogs in the past i would only ever own beagles now!

This breed is the most annoying dog breed of all. It is extremely stupid. Does not respond to any commands. It's barking is awful. It sheds a lot. It is a glutton, it always wants more food. Destroys everything.

What can I say this breed is amazing! I have a male called Toby and he's only 5 months old he has been walking off the lead since he was 11 weeks old. The only time he won't come back is if he plays with another dog but hey he's having fun!! Never had any problems with him following his nose, I regularly take him for walks in the woods and it's never been an issue!! You must train them young to be off the lead otherwise they will never get the hang of it! Do it while they are very young and you ...

A family member of 5 years and a bit now, got him when our son, now aged 5 and a bit, was only four weeks old, so they have grown up together.

We had always had Jack Russell's before, but after the death of two of them, I wanted another breed, as I didn't want to feel as though I was replacing the others.

Also, we wanted one slightly bigger than a Jack, but not too big, and not one with long shaggy hair, as it would be a nightmare to keep clean and tangle free with living in the countrysid ...

We have had our English Beagle for 1 year and 4 months and she is 1 year 7 months old. She is very playful but not rough, also very intelligent, lovable, and once again extremely loyal. It took us 3 days to train her, so she knew exactly where she should go to the toilet. She has been very easy to train, the only thing we have not been able to do is walk her off her lead, because as beagles have a hunting background, they tend to follow their noses not realising they are quickly walking into ...

I have got a beagle puppy, and she is just wonderful. She is well behaved (most of the time), easy to train, but you got to make it fun or she will just refuse to do as you ask!. She is very affectionate and friendly, loves kids and lots of attention. She likes a routine and plenty of mental stimulation. A beautiful, intelligent pet, a wonderful addition to any family home.

Beagles are a dog breed that have gotten a raw deal, being a favourite for scientists to experiment on. They are also assumed to be stupid and mean and this is not the case. The 2 beagles I have raised in my lifetime have been very loyal, friendly, clever dogs. Their main failing has been their stubbornness and their dislike at being told what to do. One used to regularly talk back or punish us by misbehaving when we did not bend to her will. The other was not quite so cantankerous. Both w ...
