“This 25th anniversary tour of Les Miserables was a...”

★★★☆☆

written by on 06/03/2011

This 25th anniversary tour of Les Miserables was a huge let down to a fan of Les Miserables like me.
I have seen Les Miserables 9 times before, both on and off broadway, and I was very excited to see it again.

The production of this tour is different than in the past shows. No rotating stage, replaced by a huge video projection background. Chain gang working the stones replaced by a slave ship. But I felt that the production itself, while different, was very good. Javert's death scene and Marius rescue scenes in the sewer was quite amazing. The Barricade scenes were weak and the shooting death of Gavroche had no impact since you couldn't see him, and the death of leader of the rebellion wasn't striking since their was no rotating stage and his death could not be revealed in the same dramatic way.

The real big problem I had was the cast and the performers. The lead, Jean Valjean's role was played by Lawrence Clayton.. he maybe a good singer but he is not Jean Valjean. I am a traditionalist. I like singers to sing the National Anthems as they were written and I hate it when pop stars or anyone else who put their own twists to the inflection in the words. In such a major role in a dramatic musical, he could not deliver.

Chasten Harmon played Eponine and she was also not good at all for the role. She sang the songs as if she was singing a pop song rather than a dramatic scene in a musical. I kept thinking she would have been better in shows like Rent where her pop style singing skills would be a better fit.

Now to the good parts. Thenadiers were good as well as Marius and Javert. Best was Fantine, as she made me tear up with her singing and acting. Also the ensemble songs were all strong and moving as well.

In all, if this was your first time seeing it, I think you would love it. As for people who have seen Colm Wilkinson or other Jean Valjean sing in the past performances, you will be sadly disappointed.

i agree completly with what you are saying. Although i had not seen any other version before i saw this one, i have read the book, listened to the soundtracks, and watched millions of videos. of course its not even close to seeing the REAL production, but its enough to make seein this a bit of a let down. I agree that i would like to see Chasten in RENT someday, that would be great. Isaw this 4 times, and on the third time, i saw the Jean Valjean understudy;Joe Tokarz. he was amazing, they honestly should have cast him in the role instead of Clayton. they really wrecked both of the kid characters, did'nt they. what with the cuts made to castle on a cloud and little peaple, it a wounder Cosette ever grew up! gavroche did not, which just goes to show. i too mourn the loss of the turntable, and scorn the screens. i would pay a thousend dollers to be albe to see the real version, when it first opened. A million to see it in preveiws. Andrew Varela was the hight of the show. the last time i saw it, when Javert died, barley anybody in the audienmce made a sound. he was amazing, we were all atunned. Betsy morgan really did make me cry to, and Jenny, Justain, and Jermey were superp. its good to think some other peaple think the way i do.

“I have seen Les Mis 4times and I was underwhelmed with...”

I have seen Les Mis 4times and I was underwhelmed with this production The actor who played Javert and Jeremy Hayes stole the show. The actor playing Valjean was poorly castes as he clearly didn't have the voice for such a major role.

The two female death scenes were over-acted which took away from the beautiful songs that accompany those scenes. However, Javert's death scene was probably the one thing I liked about the new set.

Call me old school but I missed the revolving stage and didn't like how the opening scene was switched to a boat scene. It felt more like a scene from Amistad than Les Mis.

Casting is so important for this show and I feel the mark was missed for some of the bigger parts. The passion wasn't there...it was more like the actors were trying too hard.

I love Les Mis but not this production. Don't fix something that isn't broken.

We love the story of Les Miserable and have seen the production numerous times so a certain standard of excellence had already been established for our family. The story line, songs and set for this performance were all outstanding. Our performance had an emergency interruption and we were amazed at the poise of the performers to pick up right were they left off. The 3 star rating comes from the addition of some raunchy sexual gestures(a couple obviously having sex, clothed thankfully, during Master of the House and several men grabbing themselves or making other lewd gestures) which were notably added making this performance not family friendly. Disappointing to say the least.

“Les Miserables Queens Theatre March 2010: In short,...”

★★★☆☆

written by Navigateur on 03/03/2010

Les Miserables Queens Theatre March 2010: In short, TOO MUCH VIBRATO by the singers. The melody was lost because of it. And much of the dialogue too. Lighting, scene changes, and visuals were all fantastic for the story. The lead actor (Simon Bowman) was FANTASTIC, almost perfect, despite the other performers, because he only performed vibrato where and as much needed and showed passion and imagination. The only problem is this was my first time seeing this show, so the dialogue was critical for me, and I only got 60% of it because of the bad over-vibrato singing by the other performers and the rest of my family got 30% of it. If Simon Bowman could TEACH the other performers how to deliver it'd be a much better show. Also, the story didn't explain the "love stories" at all, which might be ok, but this is made worse by the fact that they were WAY over-acted by in particular the female performers, which made the show lose its genuineness for me, and became annoying. In short, a big elaborate potentially brilliant musical show ruined by bad over-vibrato over-acting performers (except Simon Bowman). If they re-train the cast or hire a better cast I might see this again.

“Thursday Matinee (11th February 2010) ”

★★★☆☆

written by chilliben on 11/02/2010

Thursday Matinee (11th February 2010)
Unfortunately there was a 'technical problem' midway through Act One when the show stopped for ten minutes. The stage manager who I thought was Cosette coming on stage to sing Castle On a Cloud, timidly walked across to centre stage to tell the audience with microphone in hand of the problem. It was a shame really because once the Act re-commenced I thought there was a feeling the actors were trying to push it a bit to make up for the delay and I also felt 'Master Of the House' lost it's comic element because of it.The set (despite it's little mishap)and stage effects (Valjean carrying Marius through the sewers)were superb as was Owen Jones' portrayal of the convict. He stole the show in my eyes! Slightly rushed matinee but overall a lavish production.
