Bought a Tempur Mattress under 4 years ago. Over the last few years, both my husband and myself have noticed lack of support and have had sore backs in the morning. We wrote to Tempur and asked for an inspection. A rep came out and spent less than 3 minutes "testing" the bed. This consisted of him pressing his hand down twice on the mattress. We were then advised “Over time your mattress will soften through use. This softness is not covered within the guarantee terms and conditions”. Unbelievable!...

Tempur may have been approved by NASA - presumably for zero gravity, but they are no use whatsoever on Earth. We paid over £3,000 for an adjustable Tempur bed about 6 years ago. At first it was great (as confirmed by some previous reviews) - perhaps a little warm at times, but OK. About 1 year ago both my wife and myself started with a dull ache in our lower backs. This got progressively worse up to the point where we realised the mattress was at fault. We initiated a complaint in early 2012 and...

Bought a Tempur Super King bed 8 months ago without trying prior. My husband's body temperature runs hotter than mine and he has since developed a rash on his back - only since sleeping on the tempur. I myself have a slight rash on my back but have also developed a light sore throat in the mornings and breathing problems. We have just taken the mattress off the bed (put our old mattress on base), and are already feeling better with the rashes dissapating in size....

At my recommendation my Mum bought a Tempur bed and mattress around 26 months ago from our local furniture store, the cost was around £2000. Fairly quickly Mum noticed that the mattress moved to the left slowly over a period of a few days resulting in it hanging over the edge of the base of the bed and requiring Mum to move it back into place once or twice a week (not easy as these mattresses are very heavy. Over the last two years a very nice lady from the local store has tried her best to find...

Absolutely good advice. We too recently purchased a Tempur mattress, and though it felt comfortable lying on it for 10 minutes in John Lewis, it does take some getting used to. I personally find it comfortable though as you say a bit difficult to change position, and also it is very heat absorbing and makes you hotter. I don't know what the summer will bring!!! My husband isn't so taken with it. I think if we had been able to trial it, as you say, from Tempur themselves then we would probably have returned it.

I found if you have a seriously bad back such as i have following an accident and surgery then it is also very good. The relief during the night was significant. That is all for the positive side. Agree totally. Great for those with bad back - husband who has had surgery has benefited from the tempur mattress. I hate it because I find it retains body heat so much so I have resorted to sleep in a separate room during the summer. Have been advised by makers that the mattress does not retain heat!! A great bed. Truly comfortable. You need to understand how back pain happens to get the most out of this bed: the pain is caused by muscles holding your back in an unnatural position. So when you start sleeping on this bed it will hurt more, not less. This is because the tension is being worked out of your back. It takes the cause of the back pain away, but that isn't going to soothe the pain immediately. If anything, it will hurt more for a few weeks. If you have back pain and are looking for...

We had a similar experience. The only drawback for the first year or so was that it was too warm. After a while it became apparent that the aches and pain we woke up with in our backs and necks were down to the mattress and not to the variety of different pillows we had tried.

We spent so much money on the mattress (and pillows and mattress toppers, trying to resolve the problem) that we put up with it for nearly five years but we can't go on any longer - we are constantly tired, achy and cranky. Lack of sleep and dehydration from over-heating also induces frequent morning migraines.

I used to stay regularly at a hotel that boasts that it has tempur mattresses. Unfortunatley the experience is so uncomfortable that we have had to find alternative accomodation. To be brief, the bed molds to your body so much that you simply can't turn without waking and making an effort to roll up the hill that your body has created; you are trapped at the bottom of the 'ditch' that another poster mentioned. I found this review not helpful because... it does not take into consideration that there are several grades of thickness and support on Tempur mattresses.

I agree with the person that wrote the comment that the ticker mattresses tend to give you a "sinking" feeling and I personally find them also uncomfortable.

However, on the thinner ones (20-22cm) there is barely any sinking and the experience is of support without any limiation on movements.

Great review. I do have a question to ask... I have asked many sales people here in Australia about why the tempur seems to generate alot of heat and they always say its supposed to draw the heat away from the sleeper. but i trully dont find that to be the case. I normally dont over heat whilst sleeping but i have since having a tempur. We were offered a refund due to a faulty mattress but thought i might do some research before i make my decision. Hoping you can help
Written on: 04/09/2010
Hi ramata. The heat issue is a big deal on this type of product. The reps i deal with would say that because circulation is improved, your body becomes warmer, but i think this is just a salesmans answer to give an angle that wont impede a possible sale.

Personally i think the answer is simple. There is a foam element to all these tempur matts, and foam is often used as an insulator to trap heat, hence the extra heat people feel.

I would say you have to way up the benifits against the disadvantages. Can you put up with the warmth in return for what is probably the most supportive mattress available. If you cant, then invest in as good a pocket sprung mattress or maybe latex (pure) as you can afford.
Written on: 23/09/2010
We didn't have a Tempur mattress, but we did have a memory foam topper for a few months and the biggest problem is the heat. In the end we got rid of it because we couldn't sleep, even in the winter. We do often sleep with just a sheet on and have the window open all year so it may suit peopel who like to feel warm in bed.

I found your review really interesting and honest. We've recently bought a memory foam mattress from Ergoflex which is a similar quality to Tempur but at a reduced price. I understand that I have to give it time to adjust to the mattress, but I am finding it too hot. We have tried a mattress protector with Outlast and also CoolMax fitted sheets, but they do not seem to be making much difference as you said in your review. We are now not sure what to do. Could buying a non memory foam topper be the answer? I would appreciate your advice. Thanks very much.

I was very disappointed with all of these British pocket sprung ones. The best alternative I would say is an ortho firm mattress from Taurus, now in Finchley road, I have had this mattress for 20 years (the King) and if you change them every five years you cannot go wrong (I have owned three get the red and white stripes version and the firm). They are not pocket sprung but they are brilliant if your budget is limited.

Good to read these points. I've had a Tempur for about 4 years now - I did my research, took my time in the shop and gave myself time to get properly used to it (about 2 weeks). I have noticed a reduction in back pain over these years which is great ... BUT ...It is so, so warm which is driving me crazy! I've passed that "certain age" but the mattress makes me feel like I'm still going through it! None of my research revealed this particular point but then maybe I should have expected it given the material it's made from. I love my mattress but I think I'm going to have to get rid of it, simply because it makes me so hot. During the day I do a lot of hard physical work and need my sleep - but it's just too hot.....

I thought that Tempur would be the answer to a good nights sleep and ease my aches and pains. WRONG!!! What a waste of money! The customer service department at Tempur had attitude problems and were very unhelpful. I purchased from Dreams....they arranged a comfort exchange (I lost money on the deal (of course) but I have invested in normal orthopaedic bed and find it much better. The Tempur bed was like sleeping on oasis. Each to their own I say.....but buyer beware! I HATED IT!!!...

Original (not fake)Tempur mattress , guaranteed great comfort. Unless you have a major orthopaedic problem with your back, which can only be resolved by surgery or other orthopaedic intervention ,i would strongly recommend the real stuff. Have used one for the last 8 years and will not sleep on any other. Just went and invested in the Grand traditional pillow which I have saved up for and really looking forward to its delivery.TEMPUR Zzzzzz... ...

Great support, it is like laying on a sandy beach, it wraps around your body. My husband back pain disappeared, although it might not all be thanks to the mattress. Cons: Price obviously but also temperature; it get 'freezing' if the room temperature goes down below 16C and gets too hot during the night/morning. and because you move less during the night on the this kind on mattress it just amplify the problem as your spot get really hot. My advise, shop around for other good support mattress...

TERRIBLE TEMPUR - the most uncomfortable experience, too hot and the company were very lacking in customer service so I had to fight to get money back after the 60 night trial....
