“Pay the extra dollar for car of respected rental company”

Am halfway a terrible rental car experience in manila through Economy Car Rentals. First surprise was that the extensive insurance coverage I had signed up for was not the same as the rental agreement I was requested to sign upon hand over of the car. 20% of repaircost in case of damage would be carried by me as well as a 100 usd excess fee. Picked up a car through ECR at the Europcar desk in Malaga with 70,000 KM on the clock. Air-con packed-up within an hour. Car broke down in the middle of Seville two days later. I rented a car through EconomyCarRental, I needed to pay during the booking already a smaller amount and I got the invoice what shell I pay if I'm in Bari at the FireFly desk, where I physically rented the car. I paid all the insurance through EconomyCarRental, the highest amount what was available in the system. They are a kind of broker company... “GOLD car Milan to be avoided / ECR doesn't reply at...”

I use 20 times per year a rental car; half of them with ECR usually it works ok, but last time in Milan it went wrong; although I had full insurance from ECR I or needed to accept a 25 euro / day extra insurance or sign a liability form - a large list of car spare parts - where I was liable for more than 22.000 euro ! also they charged extra admin fee for gasoline, regardless if you would return the car full or empty. I used economy car rentals before and was more than happy with the service I got. Car Rental is a minefield of additional extra's when dealing direct and with economy I am happy that if there are any disputes they will bat for me. Three days before travelling booked a car for a return segment of a trip. Booked flights, train, hotel. The morning of departure get an email to say car is not available and order cancelled, not even an apology in email, no offer of assistance. I have used economy on many trips with great satisfaction Their prices are unbeatable and their phone service is very competent My only qualm was that when i picked up the car at buchbinder on my last trip to Stuttgart Germany they wanted to put a large guarantee amount on my card (the site does not mention it )they would not accept my wifes card that did not have my limit even though she was present at the rental desk. I have been using Economy Rental Cars for 4-5 years and find these services excellent across the world! Usually I pick the cars at airports and have encountered no problems with the suppliers. I have found this service to be invaluable. It's quick, efficient and upgrading to other vehicles is not a problem. We were stranded at Dalaman airport because Economy Car Rental's supplier did not turn up with our car and did not answer their phone. Had to pay for a taxi to Kalkan (£70+). Very poor customer service from this company. Had no interest in the costs incurred by their failure. Referred us to the small print. This was a total waste of money. I paid $70 up front which I expected to be deducted from the total cost. Instead, this seems to be a broker commission. I could have rung Thrifty cars direct and made a booking myself. This I will do next time. Thrifty were excellent to deal with and provided a new car for my use. Never, ever, be tempted to use the Economy site. They suggest a cheaper rate than others, do not have a rental place at New Plymouth airport and do nothing but make the booking… Read Full Review

“Be aware of up-charges and insurance costs!”

Be aware. I have rented cars weekly across the US for business a never once asked for proof of insurance. My proof was home in my car where the insurer told me to keep it. Economy manager would not allow me to bring up an electronic version, but wanted a printed copy to be sure the coverage was still active. If I can pull up the policy on the insurers website, the policy is active! My only option was to pay either $29 or $39 per day for their insurance coverage. After a 13 hour flight and no car and after speaking with their customer service team for an hour they agreed to reimburse me for a local car hire so long as it was with one of their partners (National). Very frustrating experience when dealing with ECR support, poor grasp of English language, impolite staff. Unfortunately I had an accident and had to activate the insurance policy I thought I had. Since I had purchased the full package incl. excess protection I expected to be protected, but opposite is true. ECR support tried to put as many obstacles as possible and did everything to reject my claim. Hello,
I just got a similar experience in Spain last week. A part of our mirror was stolen, at night when our car was parked at the hotel. i had to pay the part immediately at the supplier of the car (175 €) . as they said we should be refunded by ECR. I could not reach ECR at tat time. Yesteday I got an email from " Emma" stating: Damage on mirror belong to the exceptions.This is not covered by economycarrentals.com, She refers to a clause: in the contract :Some types of damages and accidents that occur as a result of certain situations are not covered, such as illegal drinking and driving, gross negligence like adding the wrong fuel, incorrect use of the handbrake, mechanical damages (clutch, gearbox etc.), lights, mirrors, windows, any part of the wheels/tyre, underside, keys and lock / door handle, antenna, off road driving and on unsealed roads, towing charges and any damages caused during the towing away, loss of personal belongings, interior of the car, non authorized driver, administration and immobilization fee paid to the car rental provider.

In other words NOTHING IS COVERED BY THE 'zero excess’ INSURANCE.. I'm pretty angry by their way of acting. This is totally misleading information, and in Belgium this is prosecutable. I'm looking for other travellers who have similar experience in Alicate ( Spain).
