Norton Antivirus is the most stable antivirus software I have got. I am always notified when my computer is at risk, it is not like a software called spyware, which always mentioned me the problems but I could not fix it with that software. Norton Antivirus 2006 does not have problem like this, when problems are found with my computer, they can always be fixed. I feel that my computer is protected against most of the common viruses.

One of the best for finding viruses, compared against McAfee, AVG and BitDefender. McAfee and BitDefender were just as good at finding viruses, although the system ran faster with McAfee.

I've always thought a computer virus was an unwanted piece of software which sits on your hard drive, corrupting other software, slowing your PC down and generally causing a nuisance. So imagine my surprise when a I paid £25 for a virus called 'Norton'. I just wanted the software to sit there and monitor data traffic as I browsed the internet. Norton Antivirus dominates your computer, and unless you do everything it wants you to (to the letter), annoying pop-up alerts appear. It also allowed virus's in, even with the latest updates downloaded. Unfortunately I ignored the pleadings of a computer boffin thinking that Norton 2006 must be better than previous versions. He, all his computer boffin friends, my work colleagues and company geeks and now me are spreading the word. Never, never, never, ever let the software near your computer even if it's free!!! I've now changed to Kaspersky (loosing my Norton subscription), which is a dream and updates daily. If anyone who works for Dell is reading this, any chance of getting Norton taken off the freebies software when you buy a new PC?

JBHT300ZX has summed up Norton AV2006 well, and his experiences are very similar to mine. I haven't got the world's fastest PC (2GHz, 768Mb RAM), but the time and resources it takes for NAV2006 to load is completely unacceptable. I go away and make a brew until the System Tray icon goes green. This period can include downloading and installing updates, but you wouldn't know.
I also found the installation unacceptably lengthy - there were too many reboots to remove the existing version, load the new version and then, after a 20Mb download of updates, a third reboot.
If any of the Windows security features are changed, there's a nag until they're reset the way Norton Antivirus 2006 wants them to be.
I've still got NAV2006 installed, but only until I find a better replacement.

I had to get rid of Norton Antivirus 2006 half way through a 12 month subscription. It was used on a notebook, and it seemed like it took at least 5 minutes before NAV would satisfy itself that everything was OK. Only then could I surf the internet etc. I installed NOD32 on another computer when its NAV2004 expired. A day later I removed NAV2006 from my notebook and installed NOD32 on that as well. It is so far in front of Norton it's not funny. I won't be going back to NAV2006.

I have now completely removed Norton Anti virus 2006, and I'm using Avast, which is free.

Avast is a bit quirky, but my PC loads and runs more quickly. I'll write a report about Avast in a few weeks when I'm more familiar with it.

Norton AV2006 has proved to be a waste of money.
