I have tried all the new Dell laptops they have been putting out over the past 3 years or so, with hopes they might have something as good or better than my Dell Insipiron 6400 -- and nothing comes close! This machine is simply made the way a computer should always be made. I imagine the only thing that might be as good is a Macbook, though have never been able to get on the Apple bandwagon. Why is this so good? First, I got mine with the best screen offered, a high res 1080p, 15.4 screen --... (read more)

My parents decided to give me a Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop as gift when I graduated from elementary school. It's been 3 years already and for a 3rd year high school student like me, it's the best laptop ever! PROS: -Wide screen, great for viewing movies and such -Large memory (I have 3 online games installed and several PC games) -It's great for travel too, battery lasts as long as 5-6 hour for me, enough for an-out-of town trip -It's not heavy. CONS: -Kinda slow, but when I updated... (read more)

Had this Inspiron 6400 for 5 years never any problems with it.
This machine was on everyday for at least 12-16 hrs, used it at home & at work.
My three kids used it for surfing the net and also playing games.
I have been preaching about this laptop for years even to all the nay sayers, evn though they had to buy other desktops or laptops in the last 5 years.
I would like to get another one but I doubt that I will ever get one that will last as long as this one is lasting.
I recommend...

The WORST laptop ever, it is SOOOOOOO slow and constantly freezing, I have disabled background services and startup programs and it is still slow and freezes.
Secondly, the computer says there is NO BATTERY PRESENT and will only run off the short power cable. But when you remove the battery and do a test on it with the battery tester, it says FULLY CHARGED.
Basically, don't buy this laptop as I really regret buying this and am now going to have to pay more money for another laptop.

Ever since I've gotten this computer 2 years ago I haven't done anything but try and fix it... and its never easy! There aren't any dell shops, so everything is done on the phone which is frustrating for me, takes forever. If there is anything wrong you have to fix yourself while on the phone with someone who can be difficult to understand! The battery does not last long, my keyboard has been replaced twice, and the screen is loose and doesn't stay put... I have not been pleased with this... (read more)

I have been using this laptop for little over a year.
Issues I had with this system
- Some keys stopped working after 1 year, was replaced
- Silver paint around the touchpad area faded, was replaced
- Front media keys got a little hard to press. Had to use more pressure to get it to work, also paint on the media keys chipped out, was replaced.
All the above was replaced for free as it is under warranty.
The laptop is very quiet and never heats up. It provides good performance for its price...

The Sound Quality really packs a punch and the picture quality isn t bad either with a 16:10 widescreen and 1,680 x 1,050 screen resolutions. However if you buy with Windows Vista I would recommend at least 1GB of ram. Overall it s a great product and for £629 it s a good deal (read more)

Very fast. Good looking. Media buttons on the side. 6 hour battery when playing games - burning cd's and doing the usual stuff.
For the money its an absolutely brilliant deal. The screen is a decent size, it's got media buttons on the side which make life easy (believe it or not). The only update I'm going to do to it is put a better graphics card in it (I'm a gamer... otherwise well recommended!) & perhaps an internal bluetooth card. also.. comes with Wifi built in!

Put simply, I'll not be buying Dell again. This is my second Dell machine and the second that has failed within a few months. First there's the DVD/CD drive that makes some discs sound like a tractor. Then there's the failure of the OS (something about BOOTMGR not being found - why not?). I had to reinstall the Vista OS. Result? The machine no longer talks to my wireless hub and the whole thing freezes when I plug in the ethernet cable. Dell help people weren't much, er, help. English... (read more)

I am writing this review from this laptop (dell inspiron 6400) and i can say with confidence, that this laptop is one of the best models i have ever worked with/on. Its a very good price and is a reliable, useful and functional machine, with high power. very good value for money, unless you are willing to upgrade the graphics to something a little more powerful. I love the Dell Inspiron 6400 computer had it for about 2 years now......probably wont think about getting a new computer till a few years, since this one is good enough. But i only like this computer cause i obviously upgraded everything on it. But this computer is really great even for gaming!

I bought the Dell Inspiron 6400 with the following spec - Windows Vista Ultimate, 2gb Ram, 120gb Hard Drive, DVD RW, 256mb Graphics Card, wireless. The Laptop is easy to use, the mouse pad is good but I rather use a wireless mouse. The speakers are also good and are capable of producing great sound for any DVDs played or music played. The 15.4" Widescreen is also very clear. (read more)

Although the Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop is a good spec, the on-line and phone technical back-up is frustrating I spent 60 minutes plus waiting for a technical person, and it took over 3 phone calls and several e-mails before I got a response. Dell offered a repair as the only choice, and I kept being told that was the only option, and after 7 days of ownership. There is no way can you get your money back. I did not want a repair, so I insisted on a refund. I had to escalate to a senior person... (read more)

Dell certainly have a unhelpful service centre.. with hard to understand reps giving what in my opinion is poor advice at the preliminary stages.

First off, since Dell has started it's laptop customisation program, the most important thing when reviewing the laptops of the same model is the exact specifications. In my case these are (in the order they appear on their site):
A T2300 Core Duo Processor at 1.66 MHz with 2Mb of level two cache (this processor has since been replaced by the more powerful Core 2 Duo processors as standard) powering the Windows XP Home Edition with Service Pack 2 and Dell Media Experience (or Media Direct)...

I have asked many people/shops around, and no one can tell me if it is technically possible to upgrade the Dell Inspiron 6400 laptop to use nvidia 7800. Can derred verify this information?
Written on: 07/12/2006
Dear yusiang,
As I said in the review you have to go outside legal channels so no "shop" will help you do this. What I said about upgrading the video card is true because Dell uses a custom slot for video cards in laptops. That slot is used even in XPS systems (in August 2006 at least, maybe newer models have changed). Thus you could add an XPS video card to that laptop, as long as you make sure that it is a card that only needs one heat-pipe, as the 1505 only has one cooler for the video card, and it does not unite with the processor for joint cooling, as do some other models (high end XPS systems with 17+ in monitors all have this joining between the video card and the processors cooling solution). The information about this is all in the service manual (the slot type and so on), and on some German site that explained how to do the upgrade on the bigger brother, the 1705 (they are virtually identical as far as motherboard and video card slots go, so don't think you got me :D).

Sorry for any confusion in my explaining what the Upgrade options are in a laptop that I have had for a few months now, and that you've only heard about from "people" and "shops" (yes I am a little mean, but I did do a lot of research for this, and I am entitled to a little mean-ish-ness). In future reviews, I will attempt to be more specific.

All that explaining aside, I don't recommend you even attempting to do this, even though it is not a very complex operation, since you do risk voiding your warranty, and the 1505 "don't come cheap". Also, it has become somewhat pointless, since if you want a gaming laptop with real power, this review is already out of date, since improvements in GPU and CPU design are lightning fast (how many multicore chips have we seen this year alone)?

The laptop is cool. However I am very disappointed for the battery. So we have to purchase a new one.

I agree with your review, its a great looking laptop. I replaced the cpu with an intel T(14400/2).twincore running at 2.0 GHz, and cleaned the fan. It has the original x1400 Graphics. I updated the Catalyst Control centre. The graphics are1280x800 on its own screen, but 1440x900 when sent to my external monitor. I keep looking for the
1680 x 1050 WSXGA+ screen, the last step I need to make this perfect.
The sound is great, twin speakers, only problem seems to be the power adapter has to be Dells own make, it send a signal to the pc to verify its genuine and only charges then. I use mine without a charger.
