The red house looks out onto the river Dee and the chester meadows which in summer is a view not to be missed. The food is a little expensive however it's memorable and presented very nicely. The staff all look the part and are very polite. It gets busy so sometimes booking is necessary which means popping in isn't always an option. Parking is also a little difficult, it is located on Sandy Lane where people park on the road, but if that is busy you may have to drive a little distance to... (read more)

I was attracted by the modern presentation of the Red House at Cheshire Oaks, and by the board outside advertising fish, chips and mushy peas "better than Rick Stein's" The first disappointment on entering was the realisation that the Red House still subscribe to the very old-fashioned practice of consigning the lone female customer to the cramped table at the back next to the lavatories (I was escorted past several available and more appealing small tables to get there.) As for the food - if... (read more)

Recently went to the Cheshire oaks version, deffinatly not recomended. Food overpriced for its poor quality and the staff dont seem to realise they have to work for a living. Male waiter was inaudiable and rude, i dont believe in his training anybody taught him how to smile or how to generally communicate with people. When we were there we seen him joking around with the kitchen staff while another girl was running around the place with a smile! The level of professionalism from this guy was... (read more)

My husband took me to the Red House for a Mother's Day dinner. We have been four times before and have always enjoyed the food, but this time it did live up to our expectations or the description on the set menu. My starter, mushroom and goats cheese tart, was very dry and the goats cheese had a hard dry crust and I could not cut it. My main was meant to be spinach tagliatelle with seared salmon; what I got was plain tagliatelle with two spinach leaves and dried up salmon. My husband's... (read more)

We have been to the Red House a number of times. The setting is fantastic but sadly it fails to live up to expectations.
The started was godd but maincourse was very average, with tough steak and overdone fish. I commented about the steak to be told they would 'let chef know'.
When moving onto desert and ordering a bottle of wine off the menu, we were told they would only sell it by the glass, which of course is 50% more expensive. We queried this and raised a comment about the meal...

Went today (Sunday) for the very first time and the food, the service and the view across the river were all absolutely magnificent. It was faultless from beginning (with a bottle of Jansz fizz) to the king scallop and black pudding starter, The Redhouse Burger with foie gras and the amazing Epicurean of Desserts! Can't wait to go again and again and again.... (read more)

I love this place! The food, service, atmosphere and wine list are excellent! I've been three times in the last 6 months and am planning to go again next month. The view of the river is nice; I've been in the summer and the winter and it's lovely to look out over. The menu is imaginative, especially the puddings! As for the staff, I can't fault them. Red House, Chester and Cheshire Oaks
I think the people complaining on this page are very unlucky or were in a demanding mood! I have always had good service, even when the place is busy. The food is always good, even when the place is busy. The building in Chester is fantastic with great views and is the o nly place I know of locally which can offer any kind of view at all while you eat. There is no way the food has ever been as described, and I have real trouble believeing that the...

Just eaten here with parents & 9 yr old son. Extremely friendly and attentive staff. Adult food very pleasant and child portion very good value. Child food was a proper burger just a smaller version. I don't quite know why the previous reviews were so bad. Either we went on a very good day or they went on a very bad one. Based on my experience tonight I would happily recommend the Red House. Apart from the food and service, the restaurant and grounds were lovely. (read more)

The first time I went to this restuarant the food was awful and the servers had absolutely no idea what they were doing. The second time I went the two waitresses that served us were unspeakably rude, slammed things down on our table, everything too much trouble and the food cheap and thrown together. I will never go again and urge others to stay away. What a waste of a beautiful venue. (read more)

What has gone wrong with The Red House in Chester? The first time we went there we had a fabulous time. The food was lovely, the atmosphere and the view were great, the staff friendly and attentive and we wanted to go back.
We went back in May, what a disaster. We had to wait for our table. Then we had to wait over an hour to be served with our starter (getting on for 10pm having arrived at 8.30pm). The starter was unremarkable. The main was barely edible with over cooked duck, paltry veg...

The Redhouse Chester - Very poor service! Was a glorious Sunday so decided to eat outside. We had to go to the bar to order our own drinks as they were unable to serve us at our table. When our food arrived and we asked for some cutlery, the girl who was waiting on said that the cutlery was up at the bar if we wanted to go and get it - very abrupt! In the meantime a few more couples had sat down at table nearby and went up to the bar to order some food, only to return promptly to their... (read more)

Have visited many times & found everything fine. However 27 March 2010 was a different kettle of fish!! There was an appalling smell coming from the wash up area which eventually they admitted was a blocked drain!! The Red House, Chester. Great view, great location!
Shame the meal wasn't great!
Service was very slow. The staff were slow in taking orders. When food came it sat on a tray next to our table at which point we took it ourselves to avoid waiting any more.
The menu was very expensive for what was on it.
My impression was that they were trying too hard with ingredients on every dish rather than concentrating on good food with a few 'interesting dishes'.
I felt the quality of the food did NOT...

On my visit to The Red House, flat drinks were served twice. They ran out of Coca-Cola. Food moderately warm and a very long time arriving. Staff did not ask as to whether we required condiments or whether the meal was satisfactory. Coffee just nearly hot. I found the sweet to be disappointing. The Red House needs to improve before we will be returning. The website advertises "great food, fantastic service and spectactular views" one out of 3 was justified "the views". Service was terrible, some of the staff didn't seem to know what they were doing, for the prices you are paying you expect half decent service £3.40 for a pint of lager, you can get the same larger in a city centre pub for £2.75. At The Red House in Chester we got only 2 scallops for £9.95, rib eye steak cost over £15.00 and tasted to me to be overcooked, peppercorn sauce seemed watery and tasteless.
Wine menu incorrect had to choose three different bottles of wine and were asked to pay £17.00 for bottle of chilean!
Poor service- nobody approached us to ask if the food was okay, pour our wine etc.
I was very dissatisfied as it was a special ocassion and had gone on a recommendation from a friend.

The Red House - Quality was the theme throughout. The 'restrooms' were of the highest standard. You had a choice of a lunchtime menu or main menu. I had for starters mimi ciabatta with balsamic vininger and olive oil, followed by roast rump of llanrwst lamb and creamed celeriac finished with a redcurrant and caper jus. Desert was rhubarb and hazelnut crumble with stem ginger ice-cream and English custard. (read more)
