I had an account with Hostgator until recently and had several issues.

Firstly, they put a lot of accounts on the same server... far more than any other hosting company I've been with. This means their servers are under abnormal load all the time.

Secondly, I was running a web-based game called Quantum Star... this game was under constant development and as such was labelled as "Beta" despite it being a released version. They shut off my hosting claiming that it was using too many queries to the MySQL server despite other hosts never having an issue with it.

Once we got into it the actually problem was that their MySQL configuration was completely wrong, but they wouldn't admit that.

On top of all this the support staff are very rude and rather than attempt to find a solution to problems they instead just block customers from using live chat and support tickets when it suites them.

All in all I would never recommend anyone go to Hostgator if they are looking for serious hosting. If all you want to host is static/low usage sites they're fine.

I'm a website designer and host several websites with Hostgator. I've found them to be professional, respond quickly on the online chat any time day or night and generally have an excellent service. Other reviews on other websites I've read also recommend Hostgator, which is what attracted me to them in the first place.

First class support. Everytime I've requested support either via live chat or ticket system they have gone the extra mile to help. No downtime in 4 years. Support forums are excellent.
I have a low cost dedicated server and some shared server accounts with them. Superb. Looking for an equivalent with UK based servers.

Paid 171 Dollars via Paypal for obvious security reasons.Filled out their online form with cookies enabled, and using my real IP address. Nothing that would ever send alarm bells ringing.Started uploading files via FTP using an IP number which they sent me via email, uploaded one file then a modified htaccess file suddenly appeared on the servers public html. Stay far. Don't say you weren't warned when Host Gator arbitrarily - without notice - decide to suspend your account because their weak security systems allow hackers to use your website to send out SPAM and phish, and then they accuse you of doing it. ;-)

They used to be good but I am sorry. I apologise to everyone and anyone who I ever referred to Host Gator. They are now the worst.
