I've had this laptop for quite sometime and it has worked it's way through out these years but now since the battery's dead I constantly have to make sure that my system doesn't overheat so most of my programs don't crash in the making but I'm soon getting a replacement battery, hopefully one with a longer battery life, so that should resolve the problem. The laptop is VERY durable and rarely breaks, I have a chip in the back of the screen where it turns to open and close but it still runs... (read more)

The Acer Aspire 1640 has been an amazing machine for me!
I have droped mine millions of times nad It works fine! I have had it for over 4 years and its perfect. the reason you guys are having problams is because you use yours 24-7 and I use mine maybe 2-6 hours a day you are over doing the battery!!!

The Acer Aspire 1640 series is the worst thing I ever bought. Within a couple of months I had to take it to be repaired under warranty as the mouse pad wasn't working properly. The left button didn't click and the button had to be pressed really hard to use the mouse. Got it back again and the problem reoccurred. Then the connection to the power adaptor broke so that I couldn't even charge it. It had always had shocking battery life so I had relied upon being able to plug it in. Good thing I... (read more)

well, for me my Acer Aspire 1640 never let me down whether in home or aboard. to be honest i love my machine. when i had a heated argument with my girlfriend a year ago i smashed it on the wall. amazing thing is only the battary came off. it took 2 days for me to put my hand on my machine and guess what it was working as it was new. since the time i bought, its running 24/7 nd never made me disappointed. if anyone ask me for the recommendation i definately recommend for Aspire 1640. I have a Acer 1640 and have had no problems the last 4 years i have had this! It runs 24-7 here at home and has been all over the world with me! I drove truck and this used to be sitting on my dash of the truck bouncing around and has never skipped a beat! Have upgraded my ram to the max 2 gig wich is plenty! You want more then get a more expensive laptop! For burning......well i have probably burnt over 400 cd/dvd and it still burns as good as day one. All in all a great lap top and has not... Good Specs for Price, Good Integrated Graphics. Nice screen in price bracket.
Easy to swap hard drive out.
Good size keyboard.
Good power management software.
Dual layer dvd writer a bonus at the time.
Good value laptop, with decent specs for the price.
Plays games better than some more recent laptops in the price range.
Not the most powerful laptop, but can stutter its way through more complex tasks.
Ram upgrade to 2gb will improve performance I think.

The Acer Aspire 1640 series has worked rather well for me the past 3 years that I've had it. The only two real problems I've had is the pathetically short battery life and the power cord connection in the back of the laptop is bad for me (causes the screen to flash when attempting to connect to wall outlet). Therefore I do not recommend the Acer 1640 laptop. (read more)

I had one issue, the screen went black about 11 months into the 1 year warranty. ACER replaced it and I've had no issues since. I've had the machine 3 years. Had a Toshiba Satellite beforehand and I like the ACER much more. Most notebooks do not have the ability to record stereo (turn LP's into MP3's) and this one does so perfectly. Big bonus over the rest. DVD burns and plays are fantastic. I am just now replacing the battery... it never gave the 2 hours 20 minutes advertised. Anxious to... (read more)

It has a big screen and good quality works good when it warms up. Takes a long time to load and dies quickly and flashes when the plug gets loose takes a long time to download and get to websites. You have to wait 5-10 minutes for it to work good. Overall, i would give the Acer Aspire 1640. 6 out of 10 (read more)

Graphics not too bad, I have big hands so the keyboard design is ok as I can rest my hands on the machine & not worry about pressing keys accidentally. The main negative point with the Acer Aspire 1640 is I have major issues with the sound, it keeps "stuttering" same with video. had to reload original settings in order to stop. Will not buy another acer product, in fact have told two friends looking to buy laptops not to even think about buying one. (read more)

I won this in a competition so it was a good price. But came with a useless amount of ram and had to upgrade. A few months ago its would not turn on or react in any way. I tried everything, and no response. So took it to a computer shop and was told it was a HDD error or coruption or something and would need to pay $$250 for new HDD and labor. So decided to buy my own HDD and do it myself. Upon arriving home my laptop was in its laptop bag and the metal clip broke and the laptop fell from... (read more)

I personally am really disappointed with the Acer Aspire 1640, its not good at all for me, the battery, the quality of the screen, the memory storage, the keyboard, everything is not worth the money. Infact I cant think of one bad thing to say about it, do not recommend this laptop. (read more)

The problems are the software thats loaded on the Aspire 5633.
Combined with Vista I think its useless. So Ive decided after a call to Acer that this thing isnt worth the bother.
I think the Aspire is got to be worth the starting price of 0.99p on ebay if I am lucky for spares. After clocking up just over 32 hours of use.
Good riddens to my Acer laptop.

It works great with everything which you might need, but a strange problem has started in my laptop since last 1 month. Whenever you start the laptop on battery its keyboard and touchpad stops working. Then you plug in the power chord and remove the battery and in a second keyboard and touchpad gets activated. And then you again plug in the battery and keyboard is gone. any suggestions why this is happening. (read more)

Had my 1640 for two years now and it has also commenced with the problem of slow moving pad and very bad battery connection. Remove battery and it intermittently revives the pad use. If I connect a mouse this will work while the pad still doesn't! When trying to use the slow pad it will sometimes then start working fine! Battery will no longer charge up to 100% only now reaches 7% and power cable has to be wiggled to kick off "low battery" symbol. If I remove battery and use mains it is fine, but if computer crashed I could loose current work. What problem could it be?

1. Actual jack point where cable connects to the laptop
2. Cable
3. Battery
4. Pad problem

I'm mystified. Anyone else have these problems too?!

My friend has this laptop and has exactly this problem. We have contacted Comet, but of course they refuse to replace battery. They admit that the battery is defective, but keep on saying that the battery is only guaranteed for 6 months. I would have thought that if something is defective, then it should be replaced. Has anyone got a result with supplier replacing the battery?

I'm told it is the battery. I had this problem and sent mine into Acer for repair. After the "repaired" it and sent it back, the problem was still happening so I called. The technician I talked to after listening to my problem and having me try a few things told me it was the battery. I had my computer for about 2 years. I still haven't bought a new battery (they are about $140.00 from Acer) and use power and it works fine. Hope this helps.

It is the battery. I've had my Acer for about 2 years and I love it. A few months ago I was having the same problems as you mentioned and sent it to the Acer Depot to be repaired. When it was returned supposedly "repaired" it didn't work. I called and a technician talked to me about a few things and then let me know it was the battery. They also refunded a good portion of my repair bill (as they had replaced my keyboard, screen and power button). My laptop now works like a charm again.

This is to tell you that Acer is the worst laptop I ever had. I think it must have inferior hardware quality and definitely the worst customer service.
Within a few months of buying the Acer laptop it began to overheat and crash. Since then I have had to send it back six times for repair in the last six months. Every time I send the laptop for repair it takes about three weeks to get it back, of course, with all its problems.
Literally I didn't have a computer for the last six months or...

This Acer Aspire 1640 laptop is great for a back up because it does what you need - Word, the Internet and plays music and DVDs. I agree that the battery life is poor but I don't think I could take it most places because it's quite bulky anyway when compared to others. It was £470 so for the price it's really good because of the hard drive and processor. When you don't have the power lead in the screen dims to save power but still only lasts 2 hours or less. There are quite a few ports to... (read more)

I've only had this Acer Aspire 1640 for a week but I'll write another review if I begin having problems. ps How can anyone evaluate value for money if you don't put the price paid for the item?
