“Refused to collect even tho parameters were met ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by JamieRodgers on 06/02/2023

Refused to collect even tho the parameters were met, was plenty of space to pick up the bag but the driver refused and the management refused to send someone else even after I'd sent pictures showing how much room was available. They clearly need to change the flawed parameters they use! They then tried to charge me an additional!! £145.00 for man with a van pickup. So I'd be paying £184.99 for nothing then £145.00.. Absolute sham. Do not use this company for rubbish collection! They just take as much money as they can from you, even when you prove the driver was just being lazy. DO NOT RECOMMEND USING HIPPOWASTE!!!

“They don’t do hills!!! ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by DBEE25 on 25/03/2022

BE WARNED IF YOU LIVE ON A HILL - This hill (or as they like to call it a gradient) is too much of a challenge for the Hippo Mega Bag Team but they only tell you this once you’ve paid for the bag and wasted lots of your own time, they do tell you however that you can arrange an expensive alternative ‘man & van’ service but there’s no Spring Discount or special packages. Completely unimpressed and assume there anyone not living in a flat area is exempted from their ‘service’ not one to put on bad reviews, but I feel this one is warranted.

“Caused damage, apologised but won't fix”

★☆☆☆☆

written by echarlish on 26/11/2021

DON'T USE. The lorry driver completely obliterated the lawn outside my house when they came to collect the rubbish. He drove all across the grass verge on my drive turning it into a mud pit which i sent them photos of. I have a lot of lorry deliveries because I have builders in at the moment and no one has come close to the damage they caused. Subsequently they apologised and admitted they were at fault but said there was nothing they could do because it is council property. It is literally a few feet outside my drive so i need to sort it because it is complete mess and reflects on my property. They wouldn't even give me a small refund to compensate me. Can't quite understand it to be honest and despite the apologies this reflects on their customer service. So if something goes wrong don't be surprised if they don't do anything about it.

“Failed to Collect”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Pords on 29/07/2021

Filled bag, paid £160 for collection, and then received a call saying they attempted to collect but couldn’t due to access of drive. Was in all day so a little bit perplexed at the reason given, as I never knew they came by. After a lengthy conversation was told the driver couldn’t access my close, due to size of their vehicle, but if I obtained disclaimers from all my neighbours for any damage they may cause, then they would attempt a second time. ( yeah righto ). I tried explain that we have had full size builders lorries, big Arctic’s, and dustcarts on a weekly basis in our close, as well as 14 Skips delivered in the past, and it’s never been a problem. However unless I got disclaimer it was a no go. And to rub salt in the wounds I would receive a refund less £40 for handling fee. Bloody cheek as the only thing they actually handled was my money. Now I’ve had to order a skip to put the hippo bag in. Couldn’t make it up. Useless company that I will never ever use again, first and last time,.So if you live in a close don’t bother and get a skip.

Exactly same thing has happened to us yesterday, even down to not knowing they'd been past....bloody useless, I'm getting on to b and q today, because they sold the bloody thing. They handled our problem in exactly the same way, strange that.....I'm fuming.

“Slow, expensive, difficult to deal with ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Cristopherg136 on 11/03/2017

Found Hippo very difficult to deal with - bag was slow to arrive , collection was whenever they felt like it and then when they do arrive I had to get half the neighbours to move their cars just so a hippo truck could access what was a very small bag - no wonder it costs so much.

“Wouldn't pick up bags or refund ”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Bradshaw338 on 07/03/2017

After paying for 2 bags and filling them we were told by the driver it was a bit tight and he didn't have time to get them .. even after measuring and we proved there was over 2 metres more room than they need .. then told by hippo it wasn't their problem and they will not be sending another driver . Worse company we have ever dealt this I would reccomend nobody use them get a skip it's easier and cheaper .

“avoid avoid avoid”

★☆☆☆☆

written by 235Diaz on 14/10/2015

Given a quote but when it was time for it to be collected the price went up drastically. They went to the wrong address to pick it up and took several weeks for them to finally pick it up after getting hold of the rep who didn't care less, just like all the staff which was many that we spoke to. Just don't bother with it

“Find any reason not to remove !”

★☆☆☆☆

written by coppershelmet on 18/06/2015

Got my Hippo bag only to find you can only put heavy rubble in one quarter of the bag height the rest has to be lightweight stuff and you must not exceed the height of the bag sides, I followed these rules only to come home to a "FAILED COLLECTION" card behind the door! the reason given was that I had put the handles over the railing bars to keep the bag open and he could not remove them, he must be a total weakling because I removed them OK and I am 69.It will now cost £60 for a re-visit. AVOID !!!!!!!

“Never picked up”

★☆☆☆☆

written by YosefMacLeod on 17/12/2014

This has been sitting in my drive for 17 days, hippo first promised 5 business days then a new deadline of 7 days was missed and the only thing i've been told is that it will be picked up 'when a lorry is in my area' Now worried that I will need to pay someone else to remove. What a waste of money, gutted.

“One of the worst companies imaginable”

★☆☆☆☆

written by voOrr79 on 11/07/2014

I paid £8 for the midi bag and £60 for collection. I read all of the small print about filling and siting the bag. All of this do's and don'ts raised a red flag to me, so I was extra careful to do everything precisely. The bag was sited directly by the kerb in a garage block and the access road to it is wider than the lanes on a normal highway. Guess what? They refused to collect it and told me to relocate the bag by the highway and then they would charge me another £40 to collect. What a complete rip off. There seems to be a consistent theme in these reviews - take your money and run off with it. To complete this review you have to give them a star rating - I wouldn't have given them one star if I had the choice.

“They will use any half baked excuse they can not to...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 12/12/2013

They will use any half baked excuse they can not to collect your hippobag, and then tell you they are keeping half your money. That is their entire business model. They currently have £140 of my money for doing nothing, and that does not include the initial cost of the bag. DO NOT USE HIPPOWASTE.CO.UK This 1star review flatters them.

“Not Friendly, Slow and will try to rip you off!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 22/10/2013

pick up between 1-5 working days, they arrive on the last day, and do not take the waste as they claim that there is a tyre buried under rubble. At this point its my word against theirs and they are totally ignorant and refuse to be of any assistance. Driver did not ring bell, instead left a calling card outside the door not even in letter box. Attempted to call up half hour later however told i now have to pay 60 pounds extra to get driver to return. They claim he did ring the bell however insist he did which therefore means i am a liar. If you are able to use any other service i highly recommend avoiding this company. Slow, unhelpful, fail to see from customers eyes, out for the profit and will attempt to refuse pickup where ever possible.

“Nice bag no collection”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Claretc on 21/09/2013

Purchased and filled the Hippo bag and rang for collection where no advice about accesses given. 10 days later the bag was still not collected. Voicemail left sayin they could not gain access to the property. On returning the call they claim to have sent two sizes of lorry (strange nobody saw them an not on CCTV). They said my drive was inaccessible - strange - fire service, removals lorry, grab loaders have all accessed it. They said my drive had to be more than 12 feet in width - strange as its 14'1 at the narrowest point. I asked for a written copy of all these terms and conditions they now talked about (even though we weren't in breach of any) - they said no, but I could speak to a manager. I asked for a refund - no! As the drive was less than 12 feet I could only have 50% and then keep my rubbish. I offered a qualified yardsman to direct their driver - no! They won't come back until I PAY AGAIN. Have checked online now (too late) to hear others had the same issues. Perhaps a company rename so we can be a tad more wary - from Hippo to Sharks? DONT WASTE YOUR TIME - this is simply a money maker for them!

“A rubbish service alright!”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 13/09/2012

If you use this service read the Ts and Cs very carefully because they are very strict and try and hit you with extra charges for anything. Not within 4 yards of the highway? Gate not 13' wide? Some plasterboard in the bag? Kerching! Need a smaller vehicle to get access? Another £35. Couldn't get access? They charge 50% of the fee. No refunds. I really don't think they have a business without the fines. It's just cheaper and easier to get someone licensed to take it to your local tip. And they don't answer/return calls. A thoroughly unpleasant and expensive experience. Shame on Homebase for giving this shower house room.

“Employing dangerous dtrivers”

★☆☆☆☆

written by johnpycroft on 05/05/2012

The driver of vehicle number HX 06 EVG - on the morning of the 30 th April , followed me along the A 40 ( for several miles ): between Highnam and Birdwood . Most of this road is along restricted speed areas - either 30 or 50 mph with ( so say )cameras covering . The driver of this HGV vehicle was reckless - to say the least ! He continued to press me to break the speed limits - often within twelve feet of my exhaust , but aggressivly sounding off his horn too . Needless to say , I refused to do so . In the event , he overtook me : exceeding the speed limit of 50 mph , on a stretch of open road between Churchwood and Birdwood In order to avoid a front end collision : between the lorry and on oncoming car on the opposite side of the road , I was forced to break and allow him in . It was a very dangerous manoevre indeed on this drivers part . My verbal report to you I understand : from your telephoned response / earlier on this week , has led to a formal verbal warning to this driver . At the time , I was inclined to follow up my verbal report to you with another to the police . In the circumstances , I would wish you to acknowledge this e mail and give me your written response , if you wish to avoid my reporting these facts to the Chief Superintendant ( Traffic ) at Gloucester Police HQ . For your information , once the driver had passed me at Birdwood I followed him all along the A 40 : until he turned off on a B class road ( signposted Trelleck ) about a mile from Monmouth at 11.10 am Throughout the whole of this journey , he continued to break the speed limits !

“Can never pick up. Loads of hidden costs”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 13/02/2012

My experience with Hippo Bag was good up to the point of the pick up. The lady whom I spoke with on the phon ewas fine an dthe pick up was organised for when I was away so my car would not be in my drive. The Midi, small Hippo Bag was filled with rubble and wood and was left on my tarmac drive just off the road. When I got back from holiday my Hippo bag was still there even though I had filled in a disclaimer to waiver any damage to my drive. I then rang them and they stated that the driver deemed it a danger due to a nearby tree and car. This is absolute nonsence as my drive is 4 cars wide and the tree is atleast 5 metres away from the drive and no cars were parked on or infront of my drive at the the photo the driver took also showed this. They said they would have another go when I had a long conversation with the collection department but for this pleasure I would be charged £30. I decided not to go ahead with this so for that descision I was charged half the cost of the collection £27.50. So I have basically paid £27 for someone to say they wont pick up my Hippo Bag from a space you could manouvre a Jumbo Jet in. Either way they get paid if they pick up or not. Needless to say I will not be using them again. A complete rip off

“Terrible Hidden fees”

★☆☆☆☆

written by Jez1 on 13/09/2011

The bag is a great idea, but as with everything there are always hidden fees. 1 If the bag is too heavy then there's a fee 2 they choses a pick up date and if you can do that then guess what there's a cancellation fee, even though you have not said you can gbe there 3 if they decide they cannot pick the bag up may be a tree or a car in the way, hey, there's a fee. I had three bags of mud, I could only fill 2/3rds full but I have no idea how much that weighs, the bags cost £36, then the pick up is £206, if i cannot be there to move my car on the date they decide, without consulting me there is a £30 cancelation fee, if any of the bags are too heavy then there's a fee £30 per bag. So I could end up spending nearly £400. So they are good if you want to get rid of light weight but is you are moving heavy materials....don't I have booked a skip and have to move the earth again.

“I think Hippowaste Waste Bags are a reasonable price...”

★☆☆☆☆

written by on 06/08/2008

I think Hippowaste Waste Bags are a reasonable price if you have a small amount of household waste to get rid of, not if it is soil or heavy items. To start the bags are painful if you are filling them with loose material like soil, they don't keep their shape and you keep having to try and shift the soil around to get it level. And the small print says that for soil you can only fill it to 2/3rds which then works out more expensive than a skip. Also remember you will have to wait for a day that suits them for it to be collected. I booked a collection online but they were unable to collect. I had gravel due to be delivered the following week so I had to empty the bags onto the lawn in front of the house, hire a skip and reload the soil into a skip to get it taken away in time. Waste of time, money and energy for me won't do it again.
