I used my drill (as a light use DIYer) for less than a year, first one battery would not charge then after a few more weeks the other one went the same way!!! These batteries are not "fit for purpose" This screwdriver should removed from sale. These batteries are Xtreme, extremely poor that is!!! (read more)

I bought Challenge Xtreme Hammer Drill and Screwdriver as a set 11 months ago from Argos. As I have my old Black and Decker corded drill from last century and a cheap Wickes screwdriver the Challenge set has had a very easy life. 1st. the Challenge Screwdriver just couldn't cope with 11/14" No. 6 screws into predrilled holes. (Made a screaming sound after attempting 3 and stopped working!) Never mind my old Wickes one did over 120 before asking to be recharged and is again up and ready to... (read more)

Just like the rest of the reviews this was the worst drill I have ever bought. The torque is not up to the job and of course the batteries are usless, I am unable to charge any of mine and the cost of replacements is absurd for the same thing to happen again. Keep complaining but no joy to be had. About time they took this out of circulation. (read more)

The drill itself, an 18 volt power has poor torque for this class of drill. However, the real rubbish factor lies with the batteries and charger. 1. You get no more than about 5-6 minutes of actual full-load power from a fully charged battery. 2. The charger unit, which is little more than a bad joke, takes hours and hours and hours to charge a battery fully. 3. Even with the two batteries supplied, - it is impossible to complete a job, as you run out of juice - to complete the job you... (read more)

The drill itself is good all round, easy to use & handle with good features. The BIG PROBLEM with it is the poorly operating batteries. 1 battery undercharged from new, the other never fully charges. OBTAINING REPLACEMENTS IS IMPOSSIBLE, EVEN FROM THE OFFICIAL SPARES WEBSITE, (address obtained via the helpline number). (read more)

Like many others I have found this to be an OK unit for the money, (albeit the friction chuck is a bit iffy)until the batteries go off. After an unacceptably short life, they fail to hold a charge. Under the Sale of Goods act, the seller's warranty statement is irrelevant, and, if you still have proof of purchase, even after the 12 months has elapsed, you could still claim that the goods were not of merchantable quality, and suffer from a design or materials defect, providing it could be... Cheap and cheerful but not for the long stay.
Battery will not hold the charge after 1 year.
Replacement batteries more expensive than a good quality drill.
The serious DIT'r should avoid this product.

My review and score relate just to the Challenge Xtreme 18V Hammer Drill which I bought a couple of weeks ago for general DIY around the house. To date it has proved to be an excellent purchase and extremely good value for money at £49 including a 3 year extended warranty. In my opinion if you want a better drill with a second battery you must be prepared to pay a lot more. I'm puzzled by some reviews referring to a lack of power - this has certainly not been my experience. I took out the... (read more)

battery charge time is good on the argos challenge xtreme hammer drill 18v, however battery tended to swivel alot on end of handle, this led to power not transferring to drill motor at certain angles, however overall good value and took alot od abuse. (read more)

The Challenge and Challenge Xtreme Drills are Argos' own branded items.
The Xtreme cordless hammer drill is an 18v system, complete with 2 batteries and a 1 hour fast charge. Compared to similar specification drills, the current asking price of £40 is amazing value, as comparatively you would expect to pay around £80. It has a keyless chuck for quick use, and an electronic drill brake for safety. It has two gears: high torque low speed and low torque high speed, along with a number of...

My original review was written back in 2006 so I can only assume the specifications have changed since then. All I can comment on is my drill did charge in 1 hour.
