I am unsure if this counts for all affiliates, however from my experience with webgains I would assume that affiliates and affiliate marketing does not work.
In summary after a few months I saw customers and sales I would have got anyway now come via an affiliate, thus meaning I was now paying commission and a monthly subscription for sales I had anyway. The affiliates are now taking the credit for any of my natural sales. I proved this theory by paying a company to undertake some research. This showed the buyers decision was made because they already knew my business, others had found the site in natural or paid listing placed by my business, not through an affiliate.
There are no so many affiliate sites out there that anyone buying anything will stumble across an affiliate site. The cookie then installed will mean that when they do buy irrespective of how they got to the site a commission will be paid because Webgains will maintain it was the affiliate that encouraged the customer to your site.
When I subscribed to webgains I was told my business would increase by at least 50%. In reality it increased by 15% which is growth I would have predicted anyway. I have since left webgains and my business since that period despite the economic climate has grown by 30%. I am now not paying 2k a month in affiliate commission but instead paying myself 2k more. I just wish I had never listening to the sales rep that contacted me from webgains, I would be about 25k better off.
Even if you think affiliate marketing might work, you are going to give half your profits to webgains for any new sales and any sales you might have got anyway.
Anyone that does say affiliate marketing works is probably an affiliate or affiliate manager. Of course they say it works!!! if they didnt they would'nt have a job.
If you dont believe me try it! It will take days/weeks of setting up and you'll have to employ someone update all the feeds and marketing material. Even if sales are good (which wont be because of affiliates) you'll never make any money as all your profits will go to the affiliates who basically sit in their bedrooms and place links on a site. It will cost you thousands and most of your time

I joined the WebGains affiliate network. The cost is greater than the monthly billing for your account. You will also need to hire a second person to make sure the traffic is relevant to your site, and to check that it does not come form other affiliates, as we have found.- Read pinotnoir's review (155 words)
