Can shred small straight branches but there are large uncut chunks coming out of the shute. Cloggs easily and difficult to clear. No good for shredding small branches with leaves. Narrow input slot means you can put just one handfull in at time and then it cloggs easily. Cutting wheel is poorly located and the whole design concept is bad. Can't say there is anything I liked about it at all. AVOID. (read more)

At first it worked very well then it jammed often. I found that I could put my hand up the 'inner' plastic chute and insert a fingertip down between the inner and outer chutes - The cause of the jams. Later I noticed the air space between the inner and outer was filling up with debris. This air gap seemed to be for cooling the motor which eventually jammed. The store had a display model without the inner chute and so no gap to trap debris. However on arriving home I found the new one was... (read more)

Ryobi RSH-2455 I have been looking for a garden shredder for some time and had beed checking out the reviews here none of which were very complimentary but I got the chance of an almost new machine on eBay and went for it getting it fo £55 which was far less than even a basic impact shredder would have cost. Most of the sdverse comments seemed to relate to it not cutting material so this was the first thing I checked and sure enough material was coming out crushed but not cut. I adjusted... (read more)

Very disappointing performance overall. Prone to jams which are difficult to clear, and struggles with any wood thicker than around 25mm. The cast aluminium motor / blade assembly split after only a few hours use, leaving the machine unrepairable. (read more)

This is my second shot at the rsh 2455 ryobi shredder, anyone seriously giving this product more than one star I would ask them to disclose their conflict of interest regarding this machine. I suspect this machine was engineered under conditions in where perfectly circular straight 20mm diameter, 40cm length pegs were fed into it, anything else in real world situations I find it struggles with, anything smaller and with a few turns struggles to throw through the blade even with tensioning,... I had exactly the same problem as a previous reviewer. The machine was fairly lightly used over about three years. It did a fair job of shredding branches that had been left to dry for a few months. Newly cut green wood passed through the blade pretty much unmolested. Yesterday the alloy blade housing cracked and split rendering the machine useless. A Ryobi brushcutter I bought at the same time also suffered a major mechanical failure recently. I will not buy any Ryobi branded product again. (read more)

Just bought the Ryobi RSH-2455 and tested it quite heavily for a couple of hours of constant operation yesterday, so far so good! Well... almost (see below).
Even without an initial adjustment of the shaving plate the machine produce a very good result, only some types of twigs were not fully cut but it doesn't matter at all for its purpose. I expect an adjustment to improve the result even further but you have to keep in mind these types of shredders are expected to leave some type of...

I bought this Ryobi shredder appox 2 years ago and after some initial adjustment it worked really well reducing cuttings and branches etc to small chips. However after a couple of months the alloy surrounding the blade adjuster cracked and made adjustment impossible. Being mechanically minded I modified it using 2 steel plates and a large bolt, this worked for the next few months but now the cast alloy casing containing the cutting wheel has cracked from top to bottom and cannot be fixed so... I bought the show model from the store. Therefore no manual etc. I encounter the same problem reported by others. Many branches are merely squeezed rather than cut. Does anybody knowl how to get the manual? Or, could the other reviewer explain how to "crank up the bladdes" (and open the cover that gives access to them? (read more)

You adjust the shaving plate of the RSH-2455 as follows.

1. Turn on the machine and ensure it is working in the normal forward operation (look into the hopper to make sure!)

2. Turn the screw with an allen key very slowly in clockwise direction very slowly (while the machine is running) until you hear a slight grinding of metal against metal and get fine aluminum chips falling out from the discharge side. The adjustment screw is located on the side of the machine, just beneath one of the two plastic hangers for the collecting bag.

The manual states you should not do this too often but many have found an initial adjustment necessary for the machine to work as intended.

I just bought one of these Ryobi shredders. The first time I used it, it did pass a lot of material through with little more than a chip in the side every 2 cm or so. I adjusted the blade by turning the allen key slowly until I heard the blade very lightly 'skim' the plate and then tried it again. Perfect, faultless! There is so much power it just ploughs through even the heaviest branches. (read more)

Initially after trying this Ryobi RSH-2455 shredder for the first time I was appalled...I thought it was useless. Branches just seemed to come through it unscathed.
However the secret appears to be in adjusting the blade. After adjusting it quite a few times it worked a treat. I managed to shred 3 smallish trees in one day.
So I have gone from being really disappointed to being very impressed in the matter of an hour. I have written this review only because others appeared to have been so...

With the Ryobi RSH-2455 you have to crank up the cutter plate while the machine is shredding thick branches to get the required shred. The manual does not say this but their technical dept does. Apart from initial set up problems its a good piece of kit. (read more)

With respect to this reviewer, one does wonder why, when they are obviously aware of this site and the previous reviews of this product relating to the the apparent problem of "creasing the branches", one still goes ahead and buys the product and then write a poor review. Strange.

Please do not automatically assume that everyone goes hunting for review sites before they purchase a product, I bought this item on the strength of Ryobi's good name, I have several of their power tools already and they have never let me down. I only found this site while I was looking to see if I could find some reviews to make sure it wasn't just me having this this problem. Had I been aware of this site before I bought the shredder then believe me I would not have gone near the thing after the previous reviews it got.

I agree with all the negative comments on this Ryobi RSH-2455. It just puts notches into the wood and squeezes it a bit. It just bruises the leaves.

The Ryobi RSH2455 garden shredder cannot chip or shred. Totally concur with all previous comments made. End up with a sausage which has numerous notches in it. The Ryobi RSH-2455 Garden Shredder is a good powerful crusher. It's not a masher or a moulcher at all. In assessing 40mm branch tolerance, one has to consider side branches which are capable ,as in my case, to deform hopper acting as a wedge. As a crusher it will produce good shreds for green bean. Good value for money if it is what you want. (read more)

The design is based on an off-centre rotating wheel with cutting blades that are meant to grab the wood, squeeze it against a plate, thus nipping the stem off into fairly long chips. This is a "one-pass" operation, and since it doesn't work, the stems just get ejected with little notches in them. Despite correctly setting up the RSH-2455 striker plate, I have fed it rose, bamboo and birch tree stems of various hardnesses, diameters and lengths up to 100 cm, and it has produced the exactly... I've spent ages setting up. I get the little aluminium shards just like the manual says when it should be set up correctly, but still 1cm thick branches come out with some bark stripped off and a few notices. The cutting drum on my Ryobi rsh-2455 shredder is lopsided. This means how ever it is adjusted it will only cut once per revolution of the cutter drum and will leave partial cuts/notches the rest of the time. The lengths spat out by the shredder are about 6 - 7 inches, which I guess must be the diameter of the cutter drum.
The machine works by having cutting blades mounted on the outside of a drum. These blades pass close to an adjustable plate. The branches are dragged down between the...

I agree with the previous reviews of Patkin and Angelabrison. I can also see the point made by mickhefferin, in that if the Ryobi garden shredder was well manufactured, it would be possible to set it up to work properly. My shredder has a lopsided cutter, and so it can only be adjusted to cut branches once per revolution, and hence, it spits out 6 - 7 inch lengths of notched branches.
It's a pity, as it is a good design that should work, but shoddy manufacturing means you have a good chance...

All but the most awkward of branches are dragged in by the self feed and spat out in small 2cm chunks. I suspect the previous reviewer did not set up his Ryobi rsh-2455 properly. Too big a gap and branches get indented not cut. Small branches pass straight through. Set up correctly and even leaves are cut into 2cm strips.
Bought to replace a rotating disc type shredder which was a waste of effort and time. This is far better, If you are going to buy a shredder, get self feed or you are...

The Ryobi RSH-2455 garden shredder suffers from a quality problem in manufacturing, of the cutting cylinder.

The cylinder is not concentric, and therefore does not cut correctly!

As per previous reviewer, because of this fault, it will only cut with the blade, which is longer than the others, and will chop into short pieces.

Until the cutting edges are machined properly (concentric), it will not work properly.

It doesn't cut/shred items at all. Thicker branches have huge indents on them and cut into shorter strips, but not into small chunks. Thinner branches can often go straight through. Only if the larger branches are put through a few times does it start to look like mulch. Even using it as compost it would probably take too long to break down. (read more)

Just wanted to comment that if this uncertain direction of movement is a common behavior on this model, it could perhaps explain some of the user experiences. In reverse mode, it is still possible to feed some branches through the machine but they will of course not be processed, only some dents from the cutting steel operating in reverse and fed through a quite big gap on the wrong side of the mill.
