I don't know whether Trapped in the Closet is serious or ironic but it was absolutely, side-splittingly funny. R. Kelly has created a sort of RnB opera which is album-length and from which he's made a video for the whole saga. The plot is thus:
Our protagonist, Sylvester, awakes in a strange woman's bed. He panics and goes to leave but she says he can't and makes him hide in the closet cause her husband is coming up the stairs. The husband discovers Sylvester and decides then to reveal he too is having an affair, with another man. In the midst of this Sylvester phones his wife and a man answers the phone. He returns home and confronts her only to find she's been with a policeman who comes in, a fight breaks out and her brother is shot. Then the policeman goes home and his wife is acting weird and he discovers she's been with a midget who is still hiding in his kitchen, etc.
Now, apart from the fact this is clearly ludicrous, it is peppered with moments where when a character can't think of how to react or is confronted with confusion he or she will immediately react by pulling out a gun and waving it around. It is also peppered with jokes about bodily fluids and the like. And I'm impressed at the number of times he rhymes "Bridget" with "midget".
Honestly, joking or not, this DVD is hilarious and Kelly is clearly a talented lyricist as he manages to run a clear theme which is easy to follow but flows well in song too. Having said that, he's still a dubious character and I wouldn't give him money by purchasing this either. So, find a copy, watch it, laugh and, well, enjoy.
