Good Points: Best of the non-professional aircraft flight sims. Much better with stick/pedals and liberal application of the excellent 3rd part add on software, airports, scenery aircraft etc. VOR /NDB navigation is excellent. I taught myself navigation with this and coupled it with a real air chart. Next time I flew for real I could use VOR/NDB's. Instructor was dead impressed. Some flight schools use this software as a training aid. Real time weather (needs internet link) is very good.
Bad Points: Needs either flight yoke / stick and rudder pedals to work properly. Sim can't manage several manouvers of real aircraft: sideslips, yaws and flying with crossed controls. This limits its use as a trainer as opposed to a game. Several features need working on. The Air traffic control is terrible, mechanical American voices and proceedures. Useless if you happen to be somewhere else in the world. Real world navigation is hampered by lack of airbourne diversion ability and no facility for aircraft emergencies and subsequent diversions..ie going to 121.5Mhz and yelling.. Graphics require a very good PC and even better card to avoid jerks in the framing. Comprehensive flight instruction course is included but again its heavily slanted to the US & Cessna market which gives limited value elswhere.
General comments: Curates egg. Wouldn't recommend learning to fly with Microsoft Flight Simulator FS4 (non combat) but as a an aid, nav etc its good. I have mine fully updated with 3rd party software and use it to practice approaches to a unfamilar airfields on instruments before doing it for real..for that it's good. To a non pilot it could be a little bland. No guns or bombs, just droning around the sky.
