“Why Bother with appointments”

★★★☆☆

written by b12ywe on 18/09/2017

After 4 visits I was not seen less than 15 minutes after the appointment time. On one visit after waiting 35 minutes without any contact or indication that I was going to be seen. I asked at reception how much longer I was going to wait. After checking with the optician the receptionist told me that the optician would look at my notes and call me through in 10 minutes. The cost of my treatment is just under £7000 for this amount I feel that my time should not be wasted hanging around in a waiting room full of other people just waiting. The staff that I saw walking around or sitting in reception all seemed to be on a break, no-one seemed to be working or talking about work

“Distance vision is not how it was”

★★★☆☆

written by Isherwood10 on 31/10/2015

My distance vision is not good after my lens replacement surgery. My distance was perfect and close up very poor. Now it's the other way round. I have been twice to St. Albans optical express and they have said twice my vision is good. My distance is definitely a problem now and need to get it corrected. I've been told a couple of weeks which is ain't good enough.

“Cost to much”

★★★☆☆

written by Kirsty12 on 24/02/2015

I have wanted laser eye surgery for while I went for my free consultation thinking they advertise for 395 per eye...thinking that's a great price but I knew once I got there it would not be that price I was right they wanted 1900.. I was expecting to pay around 1400 but not 1900.. When I question about the 395 per eye they said I just fell out of that category...

I don't know how they get away with advertising £395 per eye - I highly doubt they have ever treated anybody at that price. Just a cheap sales tactic akin to a double glazing salesman. Other companies offer fixed prices which is definitely the way to go with something as sensitive as your eyes on the line.

“Put Off By Pushy Sales Tactics”

★★★☆☆

written by bashy100 on 15/01/2015

I recently went for my free laser eye surgery consultation at Optical Express Bristol and I was pleased to learn that I was suitable for surgery. I had previously been to Ultralase and they said I was suitable, but since then, a new policy now states that you have to be over 30 years of age for them to do it. The appointment at Optical Express went well until we started talking about money. I was informed straight away that there was a deal on that meant I was entitled to 15% off if I signed up straight away. I was a bit weary about funding, so the sales woman went out and spoke to her boss and was immediately able to offer me the service with only a £500 deposit instead of £1000 (Even though the website stated it was £500) and 24months interest free instead of 10. I was very tempted as I desperately want to get this done. Her pushy, Del-boy like sales tactics seemed more suited to a market stall rather than a company that I was about to trust to cut my eyes open and I decided to review the company on this website. The woman told me my deposit was refundable, what she didn't tell me, which I have now learned from other reviews is that it is so only if you cancel within 72 hours, takes 28 working days to come back and there are very little guarantees of success. Thanks to this website I will not be rushing in to handing them my £500 anytime soon and will be sticking to glasses for the near future.

I had a similar experience in the Cardiff branch. I had already been for a consultation with Optimax, which had been so thorough and professional. My 'consultation' with Optical Express felt more like a hard sell and I quickly decided that I wouldn't trust them anywhere near my eyes. They proceeded to call me every other day for the next few weeks to see if they could get my business. As it happens, I had my surgery witn Optimax (at Ultralase clinic in Cardiff) and it was amazing, faultless from start to finish. I'm 27, so maybe Optimax would be a suitable company for you? I can't reccommend them enough.

“like the curates egg [good in parts]”

★★★☆☆

written by on 17/02/2014

Since the LASIC procedure my eye sight has undoubtedly improved but NOT to my expectations maybe these were to high in the first place. Whilst the aftercare has been excellent, problems with my eyes that were not prevalent before surgery have taken the edge off the results, I have been given a pair of temporary distance glasses and with these on, the standard of distance vision is what I expected from the surgery. Maybe a list of Pro's & cons would be appropriate: PROs surgery totally painless, aftercare 1st class, staff excellent; CONs; almost continuous smarting of the eyes, eyes are now extremely sensitive to bright light, resulting in great discomfort, distance vision not up to expectations, beyond 35/40 yards cannot read a number plate. Three months on I am still applying ointment to my eyes at night and lubricating drop through the day. I had dry eyes before the surgery but this did not result in medication I was told that the "dry eye" would continue but not that it would be far more severe. In conclusion If my eyes remain as they are I feel that I will need glasses for Driving & reading the latter prescription was expected Summary I would NOT do it again

★★★☆☆

written by suzysue84 on 13/02/2014

If asked would you recommend the surgery my answer will always be yes despite it not working out as expected for me. My reason for this is simple we are all different and have varying recovery times so should not expect the miracle of 20/20 vision in a few weeks. My surgery was 5 months ago and I have good days and blurry days but then that's what the aftercare team are there for, monitoring and support.

“Pleased with result, not local optician”

★★★☆☆

written by on 31/01/2014

The laser eye treatment itself was just as I'd expected. The surgeon in particular put me at ease and it was painfree just with some discmfort for the device that keeps your eyes open but it's over so quickly that it's fine. The results I'm also pleased with, the vision was very good the next morning and has since settled after that. I still get dry eyes in the morning but this risk was explained to me before I took the treatment. I didn't have a very positive experience with the local opticians themselves. The opthamologists were all good but the support staff seemed to be really disorganised and seemingly forgetting that they were looking after "patients" as such. I was told repeatedly that there would be no visible marks after treatment as I was having the treatment 6 weeks before my wedding but I had very bad red patches across both my eyes which are visible on the wedding photos which is really upsetting. The treatment and aftercare I think could be improved

“Amazing vision-jury still out on the company”

★★★☆☆

written by TWeston on 30/01/2014

The results of my laser eye surgery are fantastic. I was very short sighted and needed to use glasses and contact lenses all of the time. With a love for water sports, festivals and travelling, I found that using contacts was a hassle and sometimes it was difficult to keep them clean. I decided to use Optical Express as their prices were very competitive and I knew a couple of people who had used them previously. Although I now I have amazing vision, I found the experience of laser surgery with Optical Express mixed. I did not think the sales consultant gave me a true account of how I would actually feel after the surgery. She described that I would feel mild discomfort, where in reality my eyes were very painful and it took three days before I could open them properly and function normally. She also told me I would be unable to drive for a week, but this was actually more like three weeks. The procedure itself was very quick indeed and the staff at the Birmingham store put me at ease. It took a long time for my vision to really improve after the surgery and the optometrists assured me that this was normal. I had not been warned that it would actually take three months for the full effects to be realised. The aftercare has been very good and the optometrists are extremely competent and friendly. Although I did my research in to laser surgery, I felt pressured during the consultation into booking it and so I booked it there and then to take advantage of a discount I had been offered. I knew I wanted it done, but I have learned through this process that the cost is not as important as having all of the facts to hand when you make your decision and taking your time to book with the right company.

“Good experience overall”

★★★☆☆

written by on 29/01/2014

The consultation process was very thorough and there was ample opportunity to ask questions. I didn't appreciate being phoned by a contact centre twice after the consultation as I'd already booked my procedure day and didn't want or need any further contact until then. The procedure day itself was fine but a leaflet on post operative care was handed to me after the surgery which meant I couldn't read it. It would be better if it had large print. There are 3 different eye drops to take and some post op general advice which would have been good to have read before the procedure. Regular check up appointments would have been better if there had been a consitent person dealing with you. Each time I went I was always asked what my appointment was for...even though it was booked on the system and that didn't make me feel very well looked after. Overall I'm satisfied with the service and the surgery itself but after service care could be improved.

“A Visionary Experience”

★★★☆☆

written by Sugergliders on 29/01/2014

After years of struggling with hard and then gas permeable contact lenses, I could only dream of having correct vision. It was with amazement that I viewed a text I had received from Optical Express suggesting an easy plan of payments to correct my vision. I went along for the initial consultation and listened to my options and they were all very in depth and informative. I agreed to have the Laser eye surgery. A date was booked and I arrived for the operation. All the staff were helpful and the moment arrived. I have to admit the excitement of being able to see again without contacts overcame my fear of the lasers. Although it was a little claustrophobic in the operating theater. I concentrated on the countdown of the laser doing its work and this eases the tension of the unknown! I am now going back for my final review and may need a slight adjustment on one eye, but my overall experience is amazing and why did I not investigate this option years ago.

“Great After Sevice”

★★★☆☆

written by Adccr on 24/01/2014

I had IOL lens replacement treatment in Sept 2013. Unfortunately one lens has not been perfect. Since then the staff at Optical Express in Belfast have done all they can to rectify the eye issue. They have on a fortnightly basis checked progress of my vision and will carryout a laser top up to complete my treatment.

“not the finnished artical”

★★★☆☆

written by jonnyuk1971 on 23/01/2014

The surgery cost about £3, 500 was told I wouldn't need any time off from work which turned out not to be the case it took about two weeks before I could see clear enough to work as a hgv driver this was a serius set back.that aside I can read clearly now without glasses which is wonderfull though my eye sight still isn't perfect waighting to go back next month to have them re done. I have been re assured I will have 20/20 vision after that. I would still definitely recomend it, just be patient & don't expect too much too soon. For some the perfect results are fast & others (like me may take longer) . Oh also don't worry about tbe procedure its a doddle easier than a check up at the dentist!

“Very pleased with the final results but the surgery...”

★★★☆☆

written by on 16/01/2014

Very pleased with the final results but the surgery was very unpleasant, and booking follow up appointments has been difficult. It has always been left to me to book them, rather than them phoning me and letting me know I'm due!

“happy with outcome”

★★★☆☆

written by on 16/01/2014

Went for the consultation felt very pressured to get the surgrey, would get at least two phone calls a day asking me when will I book it. Very happy with the surgery myself but I do get pain in one eye on many occasions but apparently this is due to dry eye! The surgery was fine more scary in my head than in reality the suction that they place on your eye I found very uncomfortable but did only last 20seconds for each eye. Having my one month appointment the end of January.

“Eye Surgery”

★★★☆☆

written by on 16/01/2014

The procedure is completly pain free and over very quickly which was a suprise, I have had good after care from Optical express and will hopefully be discharged next month (one year after surgery). The loss of close up vision has been very difficult to deal with and does still mean wearing glasses but the long vision is good and allows me to take part in outdoor activities with fogged up glasses. I would recomend not having surgery done in the winter months if you do a lot of night driving as the glare and halo effect take quite a while to settle down. I also have to constantly take eye drops to combat dryness in the eyes which I never suffered from before. If i had the choice agian i would stick with glasses as the cons out weigh the pros.

“problem with dry eyes”

★★★☆☆

written by gregormcc on 16/01/2014

The surgery was for long sightedness and it took months to stabilise my vision. I am having ongoing problems 9 months on with dry eyes. This causes itchy sore eyes and some blurring of vision. My vision is a lot better than it was before the surgery. Not yet ready to say if I regret the surgery !

“Treatment was great, administration is rubbish”

★★★☆☆

written by on 16/01/2014

I have been extremely pleased with my vision after having the laser eye surgery. I no longer need glasses, can see much further and am able to play sport, etc without having to worry about my glassess. However, whilst the treatment has been great and the service in the clinic was good, Optical Express's administration and information systems are awful. Several times I turned up for an appointment only for the records to be incorrect. I received calls from the call centre incorrectly referring to things. I had my follow up appointmnets cancelled at very short notice - on one occasion I was on the train on the way to the opticians!. My friend who recommended me to Optical Express under the refer a friend scheme still hasn't received his money. etc, etc , etc I don't regret having the surgery but would advise people to be prepared for some rubbish service!

“Deposit Refunds ”

★★★☆☆

written by cameron97 on 13/09/2013

Firstly I would like to compliment the Branch where I received my consultation and the eye surgery clinic, they couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. The refund policy however has a lot to be desired! I went for my lens replacement surgery on the 2nd August 2013 only to be informed by the consultant that due to a medical condition with my eyes I was not able to get the surgery; as you can imagine I was very upset. I then got a phone call from the refunds department to inform me that my deposit would be refunded back on to my credit card within 28 working days. I asked if it could be paid back sooner as it was not my fault that my surgery was cancelled, (I could understand the delay if I had cancelled my surgery). I was informed that it would probably still be 28 working days. I telephoned the refund dept on the 12th September to find out why the deposit was still not showing on my account and was informed that someone would be calling me that afternoon or the next day to get my credit card details and it would take another 3-5 days for it to show in my account. I wasn't happy and explained that as I hadn't cancelled the surgery surely the money should have been refunded a lot sooner, however it seems it doesn't matter, (even if it is not your fault) they treat all cancellations the same. I asked to speak to a manager or someone higher and was informed that their was no one else, (which I find very odd), there wasn't even anyone that I could write to with a complaint, they said they would pass my comments on! So here I am complaining! Considering they first took my deposit off my credit card on the 6th July and it won't be on my card until probably 19th September is outrages and the 'powers that be' should review their company's procedures, or at least have a manager that could use their own initiative in exceptional circumstances.

Good day,

I also have a refund issue with my lazer-eye surgery from Optical Express. I can't believe I am still waiting for my refund. The fact that I was turned down for my operation and made to feel like it was my fault.
I would not be supprised that this might go to Watchdog soon.

“Need it done again !”

written by Churchie on 03/05/2012

I booked my consultation at the merry hill branch in the west midlands. Which was later cancelled, as I was already in the merry hill centre I decided to pop in anyway. I was greeted my two snotty ladies on the reception who would not give me any leaflets on laser eye surgery, as they said the font give them out as all the information is online. I complained about this and booked in for treatment anyway. The consultation was very good and the treatment itself was good. The after are was brilliant, they were always phoning me and checking I was ok. However within three months I'm back in glasses, even though I paid through the nose for the best treatment they offered. I've been told that my eyes healed leaving a prescription, and only 4% of people need it doing twice. I told them I had it done in January so I would be specs free for my holiday in June, so want it done again before I go. I've now been back every month for 3 months, to make sure they are healing. I've been back today to be told I can have it redone before June, but they wouldn't book me in ! I've got to wait for a phone call from the head office which could take upto a week. So even now I don't know when I will be treated. They are very interested in you when after your cash, but are not interested after that !
