I bought a GAMO 440 hunter, its probably a manufacturing fault but the mechanism sounds wrong. it produces a sustained springing noise not unlike Zepadee from the magic roundabout, "BOING!" The original power of the gun was lost after the first fifty rounds or so and the spring sound continued to get worse , Has anyone else had this problem? Max...

Yes i did when i first bought mine, it also made 'boinging' sounds. Turned out the spring snapped, so i sent it back to the shop i bought it from and they sent it back to BSA (whom own gamo) to have a new spring and seals fitted free of charge. Try sending it back at the shop you bought it from and see what they say.

Same problem with my Gamo Hunter 440. I bought mine about 10 years ago and have not used it many times because of this. Very loud clanggggg from the spring and looses power after a few shots. Have changed the pads/rings as i was told it was loosing air and reducing the power. Again after around 20 shots lost all power.
very disappointing as i am a big fan of Gamo products.

I never wanted a rifle that many people have, but I'll never regret buying this Gamo Hunter 440. This one is as acurate as my old match rifle (Gamo MC Contest) but much more powerful which is better if you adjust your sights / scope for a short distance. I am looking for a new air rifle and was handed a Gamo Hunter 440, without scope. I went to the shooting range to a fire a few shots and found that the standard sights were incredibly accurate and that the gun was incredibly light. I easily bullseyed the close targets and resorted to the full length of the small range (about 32yards) and had a 5p grouping with the iron sights at that range. Incredible. I will be going back to buy the gun soon with a scope to see what it is really capable of in the...

Last Fall I took advantage of a sale through Cabela's, and bought a refurbished Gamo Hunter 440 package which included a 4x32 scope and mounts. The package cost all of $110 US, including shipping. Pretty good, all in all. The Gamo Hunter 440 is a .177 calibre, break-barrel pellet rifle with a spring-piston powerplant. The grossly exaggerated press would have you believe it develops muzzle velocities of 1,100 feet per second -- the true, real-world performance is more in the range of 800-850 fps,...

Greetings;
No air rifle will shoot good groups until it's properly broken in especially low end rifles like Gamo's. Most air rifles will not group if held tightly in a vice. If you tell me a little more about your pellets you are using, holding techniques, how many rounds you've shot through your rifle so far perhaps I could be of some help. I own and reviewed this weapon and at at this price point think it's a good gun. That said there are some simple things you could try that could make a noticeable improvement in accuracy.

Bought My 440 for $100.00 (new) with the intentions of doing a "lube and tune on it". Always liked the looks and light weight of this rifle but I've had some bad experiences with Gamo's although I like my remaned CFX. What a shock this rifle has been. No need to "lube&tune" my example of this rifle it's as smooth as silk from start to finish. Why can't all Gamo's be this good? Only China QC is weaker. The only thing I am doing to this baby is a trigger transplant from the "Tuna"....

This rifle is just not up to the standard of what I expected from Gamo or my other Gamo's. I was looking around on the net for a decient rifle to do some upgrade work on myself. I found Gamo 440's for $99 new in the box at Nachez. I thought I would get one and tune it into something real nice myself. Greetings;
Bought this gun with the same intentions. If my example didn't have the usual stiff switch Gamo calls a trigger I won't touch it. Trigger or not my example is as smooooth as silk , shot streight as a arrow on a humid day with only a couple hundred rounds threw it smoked my master chrony at 900fps with just about everything I threw at it with a high with lead of 991fps with Daisy Precision Max pointed's to 1167fps with PDA'S. It's the luck of the draw with Gamo's. The poorest excuse for a hunting rifle
I ever bought was a Gamo Big Cat. Tried two of them from. They where consistantly poor. Thank God for Wallyworld's wounderful return policy or I would have suffered a loss.
Good luck on "rebuilding" your gun. Thought you'd like to know it's a jewel in the "very ruff" in your case.

I had the Hunter 440 for a while now, put maybe 4000 rounds through it. I would say it pretty bedded down after about 1000 rounds. The stock scope isnt much to speak of, but with a Bushnell 3-9x40, its great. The weight is light and balanced with scope, target acquisition and holding superb because of the weight. The trigger is a slight problem in as far as the adjustment is concerned. Seems like the range of 1st stage and 2nd stage isn't that much, but once you get used to it and adjusted...

Functionally, the Gamo Hunter 440 air rifle is very passable. It's a smooth, easy cocker that is comfortable to hold and control while delivering 13-14 ft-lbs of energy. It consistently puts the pellet right where you aim it. It's mainspring vibrates and buzzes something fierce when the gun is fired, but this impacts the shooter's perception of the gun far more than it actually impacts performance. So why didn't I rate it higher? Because all of the above can also be said for the significantly...
I would appreciate if you could recommend me the ideal grain weight of pellet so that it can produce a good "cushion" upon spring impact, I was informed that to low grain weight pellets do not create the necessary "cushion effect" to slow spring impact. Thank you.

I don't know that the Gamo really has a lower limit on pellet weight - after all, Gamo claims that you can dry-fire the gun!

I've shot hundreds (thousands?) of Geco pellets (6.9 gr) with no ill effects, but in general my Gamo's seem happiest with Crosman Premier 7.9gr.

I bought my Gamo Hunter 440 (22cal) 3 months ago. First impressions were not great but I have learned to appreciate this rifle for what it is. Firstly for a spring piston air rifle it does not feel great to fire. The rifle shudders with a pronounced twang that makes it seem like it was dry fired. OK maybe I'm being critical but compared to other Gamo's that I have owned I'd expected a little better. Secondly the trigger is stiff and too long in its travel. the trigger may feel a bit awkward but with this gun, the trigger is a two step trigger. This may cause some problems when shooting rabbits or birds as you tend to snag the trigger. I have done this many times. Also there is a nice little feature with this gun, The inside of the barrel is coiled so the pellet will spin to do even more damage.

In Australia we have a serious problem with domestic cats going feral and decimating our native fauna. Feral cats are considered pests like foxes and rabbits. My Gamo 440 has humanely dispatched quite a few and I'm not sure how anyone not familiar with our country stands in a position to pass valued judgements on this activity.

I bought my Gamo Hunter 440 recently. I shot about 100-200 rounds. In the beginning, accuracy was terrible. 440 is hard to handle at first 20-30 shots. Then I managed to group shots within a diameter of 1 cm at 15 m, after adjusting the open sights a bit. I don't shoot at animals but I am sure this is real a hunter; penetration is really deep with Gamo Hunter pellets. I used only Gamo Match and Hunter pellets. Both seem good enough. The Gamo Hunter 440 is an excellent rifle. It has excellent power and accuracy, and for the price of around £135. I can hit a soda can consistently at 40m with the open sights. Fitting a scope to this rifle should allow for accurate shots up to at least 80-100 metres, if not more.

Cocking the rifle isn't difficult, and there is little recoil, and not much noise emission when fired.

The .22 version which I own, is very hard hitting. Be advised that pellets can bounce off a...

“I need a few answers. I have just bought the Gamo...”

I need a few answers. I have just bought the Gamo Hunter 440 air rifle after reading all the reviews, and I think I'm still glad I bought it. A little more time will tell. A few things made me feel uneasy right at the beginning though. The stop block, as expected, fell off at about the first 25 shots. They should just package it separately so the consumer knows they're supposed to attach it, and will do it CORRECTLY. Are you listening GAMO? Is it against the law for YOU to use Loctite at your factory....

Diesel Doctor.....don't forget your gun is virtually in the 'budget' category and you cannot expect the engineering finesse of, say, a Weihrauch or similair priced guns.

Your problem with sight malalignment is quite common on the cheaper guns but as long as you don't run out of adjustment you'll be OK.
Of course, it doesn't LOOK right but as long as you can hit where you want then that's what really matters.

I hope you fit the scope successfully and don't expect the gun to develop its full power until you've fired at LEAST 750 pellets when the cocking will be a lot smoother.

I'm sure you'll feel a lot happier when you know the price differential of the '440 between your country and mine. Let us know how you get on friend.

When my long range confidence breaks down on my other rifles, I run to my Gamo 440 for help. Why? Because the Gamo 440 usually reveals whatever bad habit crept in like no other rifle I have ever shot. Even better, the Gamo 440 gives me instant positive feedback as I correct my technique in the form of tighter groups.

Sure, it's easy to have a good trigger pull on a great trigger. But to have a great trigger pull takes practice. The Gamo 440, with its combination of a tough trigger and general hold sensitivity forces me to better separate my trigger pull from the rest of my hold... and if I don't, it shows up on the paper right away. The Gamo 440 reminds me of the things I need to do to make better shots on other rifles.

For another example, if I should lazily move my left hand back to raise my aim point it still shows up on my underlevers as a very very good shot ...but not a great shot. On a Gamo 440, moving the hold point makes for a bad shot right away. This is exactly the type of feedback I need as I get my head back on straight for better shooting.

The Gamo 440's pleasant feel and satisfying mechanics makes it fun for me to work on form longer. If you try and wrestle it, it will beat you. If you use good form it is quick to behave nicely. As stated above, it responds immediately to improvements in technique rewarding me with nice looking groups, adding to the fun.

But the Gamo 440 has another important strength... though it lacks tack-driving accuracy... it is VERY consistent in producing tight groups with effective power at distance. There are more powerful air rifles (some ridiculously so), and there are more accurate air rifles, but for me, the Gamo 440 is in a sweet spot. Reading the other posts you will find that the one-shot field effectiveness of the Gamo 440 rifle at distance is generally held in high regard.

Before you give up on the 440, you might want to try a few things:

a. take your initial practice distance down to 10m from your 25-50(!)yrds.
b. try an intentionally softer hold, being careful to get your pre-shot routine and follow-through consistent.
c. make sure your trigger pull is straight back and low on the trigger, and that your trigger pressure is not being used to press the rifle into your shoulder.
d. make a special note of where/how your aim point moves through the shot and where it ends up... if you're doing things right the aim point will follow the same path and end up in roughly the same spot after each shot... (it's also a good way to resist flinching)

I wouldn't be surprised that with a soft consistent hold that you will be getting tighter groups soon enough.

Also, check your front sight. I have noticed some Gamo front sights have a lot of play where there should be none. And if you're going to use a scope... definitely use one designed for air rifles.

Hope this helps you decide one way or the other if the Gamo 440 is the one for you.

Well, after a few more sessions I noticed the barrel is rubbing on the wooden stock where the serial numbers are from the cocking action. I heard of this in a previous review. Not too big a deal but telling. Then I also noticed the forward horizontal pin on the rear sight is also cutting a nice arc into the stock as well. Same side. That, I can't live with. I finally went back to Bass Pro to exchange it for another but decided to upgrade at the last minute and instead, brought home a RWS 34 Diana. I have to say, I sure wish the Gamo didn't have all these issues because there was so much to like about it. But they have to be more consistent with their quality. I have no doubt that there are great Gamo's out there but ......I didn't get one. I'll write a comparison between the two once I spend a little more time with my new pal. So far (approx 100 shots) I am really liking the RWS. A few less frills, but no immediate concerns.

Sorry--within 1st 500 rounds using gamo match pelletts I broke a scope ring and the gun constantly loosens in the stock. I too had to move the front sight so far over that it didn't look right but it got me closer to the bull's eye. Brought it back to the store for a refund and ordered a RWS 350

I had the Gamo Hunter 440, and I had similar problems as you did, and I did the same as you - I took it back. I ended up with the DIANA RWS 350. All the Gamo pellets I had were not shooting well. Started using Crow magnums and Crossman premiers heavy - they made all the difference in the world. I have found any gun rated at 1000fps needs a heavy pellet. Good luck with the Diana. If it shoots anything like mine it will be hard to hit the bullseye while your grinning from ear-to-ear. I wrote a review on the 350 - if it posts check it out.

“I purchased my Gamo 440 air rifle in .177 from Natchez...”

I purchased my Gamo 440 air rifle in .177 from Natchez Shooters Supply in Tenn. The price was the best I could find on the net at $155 plus shipping. I have now had this air rifle for over two months, and have put a little over 1200 shots through it. The gun shoots hard and very accurately. I have taken Rabbits from 35 to around 90 yards, yes 90 yards. I have also killed Prairie Dogs as far as 110 yards, yes 110 yards. The most accurate pellet I have found so far is JSB Diablo 8.4 grain. I have...

This is an update on my experience with my Gamo 440. Since my last review i have sent my 440 to charliedatuna for a tune and a new trigger. If you have your gun tuned go ahead and get the trigger job, you'll be glad you did. The gun is still doing great, i have a little over 2000 shots on it since the tune job. About the BSA scope, it seems that this brand is only good for 1500-2500 shots and then a new one is needed. BSA in Florida is where i sent it for replacement or service. One service person at BSA informed me that any bsa dealer should replace a failed bsa scope, and it doesn't have to be the place of purchase, this could save shipping charges in the future. Also, after i shipped my scope to bsa for warranty, i noticed that my open sights were not working properly. The base tightened up ok but the part containing the windage screw was not tight or stable. My solution to this was to remove the windage screw and wind plumbers teflon tape around it and then work it into the screw threads. I put it back in the windage screw position and wolaa, it works perfectly. Today i was shooting 12 ga. shotgun hulls at 50 steps. So i would say at least for now i have found a quick solution to a $20.00 problem. That's how much a new sight cost form Gamo. This will be my third BSA scope as the others went bad after so many shots. I plan to upgrade in the future, i'll keep you updated. Good hunting.

“I bought a new Gamo Hunter 440 in .22 calibre a week...”

I bought a new Gamo Hunter 440 in .22 calibre a week ago. This rifle is my first air rifle since a teenager some time ago, and is primarily going to be used for pest control (rabbits, magpies etc) at short ranges.
I chose the Hunter 440 in .22 cal based on the Gamo brand name, the rifle's power, aesthetics, price, and intended use. My previous rifle (10 years ago) was a .177 calibre Hunter 440 and I did a lot of review reading prior to buying the rifle.

Basically, I am happy with the...

After a year and about 1000 pellets, the 440 has settled down nicely - the 2 inch groups at 20 m are now down to about 1/2 inch. I believe my improving technique is responsible for most of the change.

The only problem I have had with the rifle is that the recoil and average mounting system makes scope creep a real issue. I had a Nikko Stirling scope with a one piece mount using red Loctite in all the right places and it still drifted.

My Hunter 440 in .177 Caliber has just been fitted with a Beeman Universal Muzzle Brake, a Beeman Standard High Rise Scope Stop (mounted behind the forward scope mount), Medium Height Scope Mounts, Simmons 3-9x50mm Silver Series Scope. It focuses down to 40 feet at 3 power. At forty feet Beeman Silver Bear pellets land touching each other's holes. I love my rig, with the exception of the "spongy" second stage trigger pull so I added a stainless steel BAR (Blackpool, England) Trigger Shoe. That makes the trigger pull smooth until it finally wants to release the powerful spring.

I recently installed a 3-9x50mm Simmons Silver Series Scope on my Hunter 440. Using Medium Height Scope Mounts brings the scope within 1/16 inch of the receiver. Too tight to install scope caps, but I like my scopes mounted low.
At forty feet, at 3 power, pellet holes touch each other. No silencers are sold in the USA, but a Universal Muzzle Brake from Beeman sends sound forward. The 440 Front sight pulls straight off the front of the necked-down muzzle crown. Use the thickest shim sent with the Muzzle Brake.

I have been shooting airguns since I was five years old. My first airgun was Benjamin franklin which I kept for 29 years. This air rifle (Gamo Hunter 440) is likely to be kept for my son to deliver it to his son.

I have selected this gun after browsing for a month on the internet. This gun at this price range is more than what you expect. A Slight modification can turn this gun into a companion for a lifetime, Last paragraph is all about it.

I agree with this review because... trigger pull is a bit of a problem, two stages should feel like two stages. Competition shooters can win or lose a final by .20 inches so to some .20 is a huge deal.

This Gamo Hunter 440 .177 rifle is one of the best rifles I ever bought during my 40 years in shooting small birds in Lebanon. The Diana Mod 36 rifle is more professional but it is 3 times more expensive. The trigger in Diana is more accurate but they have the accuracy.
This 440 is so powerful that many small birds get exploded when hit by the pellet .an advise for user of the 440 is to us the gamo pellets called (match)it is very accurat till 25 meters....

I have a Gamo Hunter 440 air rifle and find it to be of good quality and reasonably accurate. My only problem is with the trigger pull, which is about 3/4 inch and relatively hard or stiff. Although the writeup on this model states that it has a 2-stage adjustable trigger I cannot find a way to do this and no gun shops will work on air rifles. I would like some help on how to make the trigger pull lighter and be more responsive....

I have had the Gamo Hunter 440WT for about a year now, and have found that after the 1000 shot break-in-period it loses about 1ft/lb per month, when bought it was actually slightly over the 12ft/lb UK maximum @ 12.35ft/lbs. It has since lost power and is now down to 8.45ft/lbs, I have recently bought a gas ram for it and will be fitting it very soon. Should improve things no end. “This review focuses on the precision that I have...”

This review focuses on the precision that I have measured from two Gamo Hunter 440 rifles. The short of it is that this gun is satisfactory for humanely killing a squirrel sized animal out to distances of 20 yards. The limiting factor of this rifle is certainly not power, but rather precision. For hunting applications that frequently involve shots longer than 20 yards it may be more humane to select a different rifle. For informal plinking, and close range hunting the Gamo 440 is a great choice...

The Gamo Hunter, my first gun! Chosen with the help of some research online, this review site, and an airgun magazine. As a total novice I wanted something to shoot rabbits and pigeons on a third of an acre site surrounded by open fields so I opted for the best inexpensive middle of the road gun that had reasonable reviews. I purchased it from JS Ramsbottom who seemed competitively priced and who had other satisfied customers in these reviews. The process (still done by phone) was easy and efficient...
