“Disappointing considering the reputation of Flymo”

Written on: 19/11/2011 by charlievictorbravo

I bought my Flymo Lawnrake Compact 340 second hand and found it needed a new motor which I bought and installed. I used it last year and after half an hour it stopped working. It had stripped the teeth from the drive belt and damaged the flange that keeps the belt on the drive pulley! I bought a new belt and drive pulley flange and installed them last week. I used the rake for a hour or so and it packed up - again the belt's teeth were stripped but this time the drive pulley (made of... (read more)

Bought from B&Q end of last season. Didn't get around to using it. Assembled it w/e. ready to spring clean the lawn. Worked fine for about 40mins on short, newly mowed, lawn with some patches of moss in shaded areas. Motor then smoked and stopped. Will be taking it straight back to B&Q in the hope of a refund. Obviously motor is inadequate for the purpose. Advised to think twice about this product as replacement motor for £20 may only last as long as original!! (read more)

Had two of these Flymo scarifiers but the motors burnt out after two hours use. The first one was under warranty and replaced by B&Q unfortunately the second was out of warranty and is now in the bin. I contacted Flymo and basically they just told me to get lost. In fact the last E Mail them from them was very rude and insulting and I thought it was only the customer who cracked up. I only realised why when I read the reviews. After hireing a monster petrol scarifier for a garden customer, and being disappointed with the results, I bought the Flymo Lawnraker Compact 340 from Amazon for under £50 (the cost of 2 days hire!) I am very pleased with this little gem. Took about an hour and a half to really 'do' a third of an acre. One thing to remember is that it cannot be 'steered'ALWAYS lift the back wheels when turning! and obviously stop the motor when doing so, otherwise yous might overheat too. Also make sure... Written on: 04/04/2009 by mycraigydon (1 review written)

The motor of our Flymo Lawnraker Compact 340 burnt out after around a total of five hours use - two sessions of 2 1/2 hours each. it was at the highest setting and used after mowing. The motor was not labouring and only a couple of tines broke so I was not abusing it. I also made sure the side and internal air vents were kept clean of debris too! Not for large lawns, may be OK for regular maintainance of postage stamp size gardens where it is used for just 20 mins each time. (read more)

If you haven't mowed your lawn for three weeks, your lawn is covered in stones branches and other debris and you take this out on the lowest setting and cram the thatch down in the bucket as you go, the motor will burn out and/or the tines will break. Written on: 17/04/2010

I would suggest these comments are not the norm. Reading other reviews broken tangs do not seem to be an issue, which running over a building site as suggested would cause them to become damaged. Also running them through a wood would also tend to damage them. I would therfore suggest the end user is aware of the requirements and limitations of the device and the device is, as suggested of poor quality and not reliable enough to the task.

Our Flymo Lawnraker Compact 340 was a replacement for a black & decker which we'd had for years and was fabulous - sadly it seems they have stopped making it so when if finally died after sterling service we couldn't replace it.

The flymo was enormous by comparison, the wheels kept falling off and it did nowhere near as good a job. We bought it last year so I suppose we've done better than others but the motor gave out on its first day of use this year. (read more)

This is the second Flymo Lawnraker I've been foolish enough to own, "unlucky" seemed the opinion of the shop when I returned the first one, sadly just out of warranty. Bought this 340 in February have used it twice, it doesn't work as well as my 20 year old Black and decker did and after the second use there was not one spring tine that was not broken, it should be brought to the attention of the trading standards body. This machine is not of merchantable quality This model has an uprated motor in it so at least it kept going but I suppose if the tines are all broken there is not much load on the motor anyway. Just got my Flymo Lawnraker out of the garage for its 2nd run out. Within 2 minutes the motor had completely seized. There was an acrid burning smell and smoke coming from one of the vents. B&Q were no help as I have had it just over 12 months. I can only use a lawn raker once or twice a year so to seize up after using it only once before.. it is a disgrace.

I bought my Flymo Lawnraker Compact 340 in Jan 07, I have a small patch of grass to the rear of my house. I used my lawnrake last summer and then packed it away. Since then my garden got a wee bit out of control, to sort this out I borrowed my father in law's powerful Petrol Mower to blitz it. Today I took my lawnrake out to give my lawn a trim and to my horror smoke started to appear from underneath.

Having read these reviews, I was a bit wary of buying this. It was easily put together from the box and the long reach cable meant I didn't need an extension cable trailing around. I switched it on and tried on the highest setting and then lowered the setting for the right result. I noticed the performance got poorer but this was because the moss was overfilling inside the box. Written on: 22/04/2007 by numbnutz (1 review written)

In a panic, I took the Flymo Lawnraker Compact 340 lawn rake apart to investigate! The drive cog and belt had melted. Why? - Because the motor cooling is a poor design! The air intake filter gets blocked immediately by debris, and then the motor overheats after 15 - 25 minutes use. There is no cut out, and so the motor drive becomes so hot the plastic drive cogs and belt melt until destruction!

Perhaps the drive cog should be metal, and you should get a few spare belts with it!

Having had a small Black and Decker Lawn rake for more than 20 years, it burnt out on Saturday last. We went to our local B&Q to buy a new lawn rake, and saw the Flymo, for which we have previously had a high regard. We liked the wider rake and the more powerful motor. How misled we were. I bought the Flymo Lawnraker Compact 340 because at 600w it had the largest motor out of all the lawn rakes I had looked at (much good that did as it burnt out after a short while)! While the machine worked, I was impressed at the way it collected the moss and compacted it in the box, which was easy to empty.
