Good Points: If you have ever heard Rascal Flatts you know what they do best... harmonizing. Their strength is displayed as well as ever in this album. The quality of the songs in this album are fairly level with songs from their previous albums. This may be good or bad based on how well you like their previous albums. The music implemented some innovative style that stretches the borders of the country genre, as can be seen in the title track "Me and My Gang" as well as others. This has been a major drawback according to several reviews I have seen on this album, however, I tend to think writing music that implements new ideas and styles is a great quality. The boys have also have dived out of their comfort zone toward playing backwoods, quick beat, almost Bluegrassy sounding music that I have never heard from them before. This is displayed in the song "Backwards." Props to the producers and musicians for implementing some new things to keep their music sounding fresh.
Bad Points: All in all I felt that this album was not as enjoyable as previous previous albums I have heard from this group. The majority of the music produced in this album are slower ballads. The songs are not necessarily bad, but I am not really into ballads and I generally look for more of a balance between slow songs and up beat songs. This album had more of the slower ballads in it. If you enjoy that thing, you'll be happy with this album. As far as the ballads go they are very nice and the harmonies blend well making for some great listening, especially with their hit single "What hurts the most." The lyrics on this this album may be a little underworked. They really can't compare to Feels Like Today the album. I can understand as a song writer myself that lyrics are sometimes hard to come by, and it may be easier to pay more attention to the music. I mean, hey, in a lot of pop music they writers just sing random words or cuss words for that matter and just worry about writing good accompanament and the songs are still a hit. But for the general population this may be more of a concern. Anyways, this does not necessarily reflect badly on the band, but they did their best with the songs they chose to sing.
General comments: Overall, I think Me And My Gang by Rascal Flatts still produced an above average album for typical country music. It may not be as great as previous albums, but it has some great points.
Some controversy has been made about the title track being a rip off on Big & Rich's single "Comin' to your City." I listened to both trying to catch the correlation, but really found very few similarities except perhaps the tempo. I personally think Rascal Flatts is a much more talented band then Big & Rich, and their music styling is much different. It is hard to imagine these two songs being compared, but that is just me. On a lighter note I really enjoyed their title track and thought it put a little bit of a different face on the group.
This album has some fun, some humor, some heartwrenchers and a lot of sappy ballads. I have found that a lot people either love it or hate it. I commend this work and say that I would buy the CD, however, I would recommend anyone to listen to it on internet streams and make sure you like it before you buy it. I look forward to seeing what the band turns out next.
