“best riding school ever!!!!”

Written on: 29/03/2013

I love this place and have been riding here for 4 years. I can now do walk trot and canter and some jumping. The staff and the horses are really friendly. I am glad that I learnt to ride here and couldn't imagine going anywhere else. The stables can be a little messy at busy times but is mostly because the staff don't have the time. I help out most Sundays and since I started helping I have learnt so much more about horses and how to look after them. I would definitely recommend this place to... (read more)

“I love this place!”

Written on: 26/11/2012 by Leahallcock

I started riding at Matchmoor in 2003 and I have never regretted learning there. I moved from somewhere in Westhoughton that wasn't very nice but as soon as I got here I felt at home. Everybody is so welcoming and all the horses are so friendly! I don't think I disliked anything about it during my time here. Even my mum started riding here with me! Our favourite teacher was Australian Sarah although everyone at the farm were delightful! I miss this place so much but I definitely recommend... (read more)

Oh my days biggest load of pooh I've ever read, the horses are so well looked after, yes there are a couple in a stable at any one time, ( for a very limited time) these horses are waiting for their riders once ridden the horses are turned out into the secure large open fields. All of the riding instructors are fully qualified (otherwise there insurance would be invalid!!!) and the yard staff are and curtious and caring. Before one makes an uninformed comment maybe one must inform oneself with the facts!!!

“starts you off”

Written on: 24/08/2012

At matchmoor they get you started up to cantering, then they leave you wandering round like a lemon. I don't think they set you at target. They teach you flatwork but not how to tack up. The staff are quite rude. I think Hazel is particuarly rude to clients and horses. I DEFINITELY wouldn't reccomend it. I left in 2009 so thats my review til then. TodayI have had my first riding lesson for a long time. I used to do a lot of riding but other things got in the way. I went to Matchmoor today for a private lesson with David. He was very patient and great at getting across what I needed to do in order to get the most out of my riding experience. Bramble, the unfortunate horse I got was lovely natured and made it very easy to get some confidence back. I have now booked another lesson for next week and cant wait. Thank you Matchmoor for... Written on: 17/04/2012

What can I say? Riding horses is a great stress reliever, being in the great outdoors, able to think about things, just be on your own, getting fresh air. All the staff and horses are lovely. I especially liked the horse, Rosie. She was really gentle and patient. The stable hands are very nice, and the teachers teach you the proper way. A few years ago, I had my 9th birthday party here, I had 10 guests, I asked them if they liked it, and they all said that they'd definitely go again. I am... (read more)

Matchmoor is a great place but they leave the horses bridles on all day and the stables are dirty and cramped. If you were a horse would you like to be stuck a cramped stable with a big mettle bit in you mouth all day, it would be horribe wouldn't it? The hacks are good but the stables are dirty. I like some of the horses but i think that they souldn't leave the bridles on all day. I enjoyed my friends birthday party here and a few hacks with my friend but i wouldn't really recomend it because of the cruel living conditions for the horses. They shouldn't have opened a riding shool if they can't properly care for their horses!

My friend and I go on a hack at Match Moor when we can we try to go at least twice a month. It is affordable and is great for stress relief. The staff are a credit to the owner, they are very helpful and respectable. We are not the best horse riders as we only started to have lessons a couple of years ago and are not the youngest of riders either. All the horses we have rode have a great temperament. We are lucky to have a great riding school within a reasonable distance to our homes. (read more)

I am in my thirties and have been riding since I was eight. I have ridden at many different riding schools over the years and I have never been to one as good as Matchmoor.
Their horses are home bred (they have a Fell stallion and several different types of mares they breed from). Horses can look muddy etc and appear to be cramped in some stables
Horses are regularly turned out.

Although I have not been to Matchmoor Riding School for two years, I've always recommended it to friends and family who are keen to learn all about the equine sport. I have watched Matchmoor progress over many years.
Due to myself having many horses over many years (mainly for jumping and cross country), i tend choose Matchmoor for hacking out around the country side/bridle paths. There are quite a few trails to choose from.

I've now ridden at this centre for just under 8 years, i've seen horses and staff come and go. I feel that the team of horses and the relationship with staff at matchmoor now is a very well thought through and well developed. Its easy for people to come on this site and 'rant' away about rocky feild, cramped stables or bad grooming. However if they didn't notice the ridding school is situated in the moors, where there are rocks. Horse's are wild animals, they may be domesticated on the yard... (read more)

Im not being funny but if the horses were cramped then they wouldnt have got BHS aproval. The schools have recently been redone and are fabulous to ride in. The horses are brushed every morning before they are tacked up and their feet are always checked and picked out. You have clearly never worked at a riding school cos if you did you would know that it is impossible to give every horse on the yard a full groom every day. All the staff are lovely and easy to talk to and give great advice to customers.

On the contrary, i believe the riding school provides good horse care and the animals are well looked after. You may not know this but looking after 50+ hoses on a working yard daily is a tough task, it would be impossible to give a full groom to every horse every day. All the horses have a quick groom, feet picked out and a check every morning and evening as well as regular care during the day to maintain good health. As Matchmoor is BHS approved the care must be good as the BHS have high standard, also the arenas are well kept (especially as they are outdoor, which are much harder to maintain). The staff provide high quality teaching and are kind and considerate, offering advice and service with a smile to ALL customers.

I think Matchmoor is a perfectly nice riding school, with good instrucors and gentle ponies. It isn't the cleanest school ever, the horses don't get groomed loads, but they do get a lot of time out in the fields which are fairly large. I had to leave because I started loaning my pony and it would cost too much, but if not I would definately still be riding there. My friend now rides there, and she loves it! to be honest i think you have exagerated this way to much! if this riding school which i have ridden at since it opened was that bad the BHS would not approve it and would have it closed down. the horses are not cramp and the horses stay out in the field yes fields can have rocks in but horses are meant to live out in the wild so you statements seem to be useless and injust if you want to learn to ride properly then your going to the wrong lace. horses feet do not need to be picked out after every lesson unless you are riding in bad conditions. also no child is allowed to pull fur out of silver they were prob trying to sort out its mane !! and silver is naughty the horse prob kicked out at the owner so get your facts straight

Last Sunday, I couldn't go because the rings were completely frozen over and my mum was scared about the horses spooking and me falling and breaking something (for the first time in my life!).
