Before we met Nelson at Townends we had been dragged around flats we didn't want to see by one agent and outright lied to by another. We had really lost hope. I let my property in Guildford through Townends and they were brilliant from the start. Having had the property on the marketed with another agent for over a month I instructed Peter and colleagues on the Thursday before Easter weekend. It's been great dealing with the guys at Streatham Hill. I've been a landlord for 7 years and after being let down by my previous letting agent I was seriously out of pocket and just didn't want to use an agent again. What can I say about this company- more than a lot. When first using Townends as a letting agency, my co-tenants and I decided on a property that was being let through them (the first mistake of the landlord). The already extortionate rent fees that one can only assume had been suggested by Townends slightly put us off renting the property, but when Townends sent us a detailed breakdown of our ‘moving-in’ fees we could not help but feel robbed. I'd almost lost hope. Then I met the team. Tired of the usual agent talk it was so nice to deal with normal well educated people! After the first viewing they both understood what I needed for my flat and after a couple of days it was let. No hassle, no lies just a potential tenant who was right for me and understood the limitations of my property. This is the worst agency I've ever had to deal with. I'd advise all prospective tenants to avoid them at all costs. There were many lies they told me, but what's most important now, they haven't paid back my deposit yet, even though I moved out three months ago! Considering that the agency fees are much higher than in the majority their competitors you would naturally expect higher or at least not lower than the average service. However, the inventory list we got from them was surprisingly inaccurate, the check-out report was terrible, we disputed half of the items of it. Also, they arranged viewing many times but nobody came at the arranged time, then came afterwards without notifying us, which was not convenient for us at all. (read more)

I have only been in my flat 9 months, but can safely say I will never use Townends again. At every possible occasion for maintenance issues they have dragged their feet for as long as possible before fixing problems. The boiler. Wow, looks like I'm part of a large crowd here. I'm not renting with Townends but have some very close friends who are. Basically, once the deposit was paid the support stopped. I have rented with Townends and have to say the front end guys did a good job and got me to sign the tenancy. Mostly because I really likes the house. I have since had many maintenance issues which are dealt with at their head office and their action is extremely slow. I used Townends to rent a Flat in Ealing, London. I have never received such a terrible service not from a letting agency but from any company in my whole life. Having investigated the points that you have raised it is our understanding that a professional clean was agreed by the landlord, however since the check-out of the previous tenants we have been unable to contact them for authorisation even after several attempts by the branch staff and our Head Office management team. Without this authorisation we are unable to go ahead with the professional clean, and the maintenance work we have quoted for them. Dreadful dreadful dreadful. I have a long story but I will cut it short here. We rented a flat from Townends and less than a week we completely regret it. From the point we moved in we knew we made the worst mistake of our lives. In this instance we have heard back from the landlord and have received authorisation to resolve the maintenance issues that have been identified and we are in the process of booking in appointments with the relevant contractors at a time convenient for the tenants.

We are first time buyers and was over the moon when our offer was accepted. After an offer was accepted we completed everything the sales agent(from Putney branch) have asked for us to do like survey,solicitors,mortgage arrangement etc. (he was very pushy all the time) and we even paid for survey. After searching the Internet for weeks I found a house with Townends Aldershot branch. I found them to be very polite an professional and they helped me secure the home I wanted quickly. I tried to rent a property through Townends, and while most agencies charge the so called "Credit Check Fee" of 100GPB per person (which is an absurd for a 20 min credit check, just called it Admin Fee, and do not treat tenants as stupid people)... but Townends will try to charge you a "Check-In Fee" and a "Admin Fee"... so we were trying to rent a 2 bedroom flat for 950 a month, and only on initial fees they were trying to charge us 700GBP. Do not trust them, they will rip you off. We and many other tenants have ended up paying huge sums of money because they charged us for every single thing you can imagine. If i would give no stars i would. Shoddy and incompetent is how i would describe them. They are useless at communication, and up to now are thieves. They took £110 from us for a 'check-in inventory' that was never done or even requested by the landlord to be done so. We have chased them for months to get it back and they have ignored us. This has been my first and will be my last use of townends letting services. I have endured complete negligence the moment after the offer was accepted and deposit was taken. Communication between Townends and their clients is weak at best. We are now in a position where all pre-tenency documentation and security deposit, first months rent, admin fees, inventory cost and reference cost have to be paid within 1 working day - an impossible task. I am a landlord and have had nothing but problems with this company and will never be using them again. They cannot account for clients money produce incorrect invoices and take for ever to rectify their mistakes. Unbelievable
I have made a formal complaint to you office have had to jump through various hoops. only when I advised you that I had contacted the property ombudsman did you offer to refund the administration fee. I stand by all my comments and your administration is completely useless.
I know that your egham and englefield green office are aware of this complaint as theyhave referred to my comments in the this review centre although they did not seem particularly concerned!!!

I am now taking them to court and have been put under so much stress by them. The sales team Lucy and Jack are great but that is where it stops. They can not get contracts right, they lie about fees, they promise the earth and deliver nothing and there has been many a time i have put down the phone to them in tears. We are surprised and disappointed to read your comment which you have previously posted on AllAgents.
Having investigated the points that you raise it is our understanding that there were some difficulties that you experienced and we apologise sincerely for this. It is equally important to note that the matters brought to our attention were acted upon and remedied as swiftly as possible, in particular the issues with the cleaning which actually relate to the clean not being carried out satisfactorily by the cleaning company and not damage caused, for which the cleaning company returned and remedied accordingly. As a result of this your Tenant confirmed their satisfaction and you were advised of this. It is further noted that no funds for the clean were passed to the cleaning company until such time as this confirmation had been obtained and as such merely held back on your landlord account in lieu of payment. We note that you also fail to point out that part of our actions to remedy matters for you included Townends contributing to 50% of the cleaning cost by way of a good will gesture to you.
Whilst we strongly refute your further allegations, finding them somewhat libellous in content, we are not in the business of upsetting our clients and as such have already invited you to speak with us directly to discuss fully. I am disappointed to note that you have not chosen to do so and have instead simply repeated your previous comments on a different website. I would just like to say I called Karl on Monday and left an answerphone message to discuss the whole situation and he has never called me back. As for the cleaners the full facts of them leaving my house with the doors open, windows open and sitting in garden smoking to which I had to go clean up after them is all very sad. The company have had me in tears and I have had to spend an obscene amount of time chasing - all I wanted is cusromer services. I tried to call you Friday after your comments but just got the answerphone again. I wanted an agency who would look after my assests, pay on time, respond to queries and in general have a rapport with for many years and this does not seem to be what you are looking for but maybe you can prove me wrong.

I apologise for not being able to take your call in person on Friday – however I am surprised that you didn’t simply leave me a message or send an email as I would have called you back as soon as I was back at my desk. Having also spoken to Karl he has advised that he does not appear to have received a message from you either.
We do feel that we have fully investigated your complaint and you have already received compensation meaning that, in our opinion, this matter is closed. The reason I did not leave a message is the number you first left was for Sam not for you. I have a calll record from Vodafone noting a call was connected to Karl on Monday at 1446 that was connected for 5 mins 46 seconds. I have left a message again. Yes I guess the matter of cleaning was closed even though matt went back on his word and halved the refund - I have asked for confirmation that he will not go back on this again but not heard back.

I have had several dealings with Townends Streatham Branch whilst procuring property. I have found that the lettings team; in particular Andrew, Clint and Daniel have been very friendly whilst always maintaining professionalism. Townends systematically ignore requests to follow simple instructions. They also in my experience deny this - which can only be described as being outright untruthful. I have used used Townends to find tenants for my properties for many years now. I mainly deal with Jack who is always very polite and professional. This branch are superb and finding tenants and I can't even remember that last time I have a void period in a property. Most of the time the tenant find service progresses smoothly, but even on the odd occassion when there may be slight hiccups, I found Townends very willing to help resolve any issues. They are super fast at finding tenants because they lure people in my opinion by lies. They agree to tenants request at the time of finalising the deal and then back out. You are likely to have a set of unhappy tenants but i guess it still works for the landlord.

Townends represent everything wrong with the estate agent industry, and do much to justify its terrible reputation. Such was my experience renting from them that both I and my landlord have agreed to renew our tenancy agreement on a private basis. Their feeds are a joke, and if ever you leave one of their staff a message and he or she actually calls you back, run to the the nearest church bells and ring them in sheer joy.
