I have used 18185 for two years and things have gone very well. Occasionally, I don't get through first time, but always do the second time. I have never been cut-off. I have a direct debit arrangement, so they deduct the money according to their bill - which is always extraordinarily cheap. UK national calls are free, and when I recently rang Los Angeles it was 1p per minute. I've been using this service for about a year now - not every week but had been fairly happy with call quality and the price is good. BUT it's a dreadful service if things don't go right. It's impossible to contact anyone and the website is one of the worst I've seen in a long time. Today, after just 25 mins, I was cut off mid-call with the message that "for security reasons" I'd reached my limit for the day and to try again tomorrow. Tomorrow! Well gee, thanks. I was totally unable to complete the registration process. On the first line of the form the screen cut out when I tried to move the selection dot from "Mr" to something else. Then I tried leaving it as "Mr" and continuing with the following items. But every single time, and I have tried at least 30 times, the screen cut out before I was able to complete it. I have been using this service for many years, and at first it was very good. Excellent rates, easy payment by Dir debit, good detailed invoices, and I was using it from my landline or from my mobile phone. Problems have appeared recently. First, the service stopped working with my landline. When I contacted 18185 cust services, they told me the problem is with my landline provider (Post Office UK), that they block services such as 18185. The 18185 service worked fine for me for a while, the call quality was good and had no issues with double billing from my phone service provider. However, as 18185 require you to set up a debit order and if there are ever any problems with billing, say goodbye to your money and forget ever being able to sort it out. Call quality has become so poor that nearly all calls have to be ended prematurely. There are considerable connection delays, then further delays during speech and very muffled, at times inaudible. Any sort of customer service is practically non-existent and to every email I send asking for help, they repeat the same mantra about doing 'test calls' and getting a ;'technical team' to look at it. Do not use 18185 if you want to save money. They take the money twice and refuse to refund it. First of all they sent an email saying the bank wouldn't pay the direct debit (possibly due to me not using 18185 for a long time), it was still set up on my bank account. I was made to pay by card and told to set up the direct debit again. I've been with 1899, 18185 and 18866 (yes, I have accounts with all 3 and use the one that's cheapest for the particular destination I'm calling) for 6½ years and can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times a call has failed or the connection has been so poor that I had to disconnect and re-dial. The savngs I've made (the GL makes 40+ minute calls to her sister in Spain each week and, at 4p connection + 1p/minute, there's no need to worry about her racking up a big bill)… Read Full Review

We have been using 18185 for the past three years to call Thailand Europe and Australia, we were delighted with the possibility of making cheap calls for family and business purposes; the bill at the end of the month was always surprisingly low; an unusual occurrence. Been with them for years, gets worse year after year. Terrible connection (almost always does not connect). The other side does not hear any ringtone (on most occasions I had to text them or ring them to pick up the phone which beats the whole purpose of trying to get a cheap call!). Keeps ended up into a voicemail (kept getting charged each time). Drops frequently when connected, poor reception.

My daughter lives in Jersey, Channel Islands. We were both spending a fortune on calls - me with BT and her Jersey Telecom.
I signed up with 18185 and all my calls now cost only 5p with zero p. per minute. As my daughter is not with BT her calls are internation so I always do the calling.
I have had no problems to date and have saved lots of p. The inability to locate or call a customer service does worry me somewhat as does the visibility of my bank account details when I log in.

I work in a school and signed up for 18185 after my brother highly recommended the service. It was excellent until recently when they stopped the texting service. What are we supposed to do now? The system works reasonably well, all apid via direct debit monthly and only occasionally does it suffer poor connections but as I had forgotten to print off 2010 invoices I needed to contact them -that's when I realised it was impossible to query anything as their link to "customer services" email went via the FAQs which merely looped back to the start so I could never get an email address for customer services or any tel no- they are uncontactable which worries me if there is a money issue… Read Full Review
