The Astra VXR is Vauxhall's latest foray into the Hot Hatch market but how does it compare to the other sporty hatches out there. Use this specially created forum to compare it against other cars in its class - especially the Ford Focus ST.

Good Points: Excellent straight line speed and acceleration. Lots of 'as standard' features and lots of gadgets. Fantastic sound system, even the base system (CD30) has a brilliant sound quality, and upgrading to the premium system (CD70) will give you an almost cinema sound quality. Nice chunky alloys, brilliant sports seats and very flash paint jobs make the VXR Astra a real headturning car.

Bad Points: Cornering at high speed leaves a lot to be desired, putting 240BHP through the steering AND driving wheels makes the car (and driver) struggle to keep control. The EDS (Electronic Driving System) lets the car down, it is supposed to balance weight throughout the car but fails if more than 2 people are in the car when cornering.

General comments: Build quality in the Vauxhall Astra VXR is good, safety features are numerous and WORK, with all the gadgets on the car, I did think weight would be an issue, but no, the car can still pull away in 3rd gear from the lights and have BMW 3.6 Turbo's crying into their steering wheels. Overall, this car is certainly a fun drive, insurance is not too bad depending on age and the company of choice. I think this car is for the slightly older man, looking to re-kindle some of the fires of youth.
