Good Points: Very deceptively powerful engine. Everyone thinks its a family car, then you roar past them with raw power from mighty mo. I love the sound that my stick shift S40 SE engine makes at low gear when I growl past Z4's & M3's.
General comments: I am in Switzerland and the Volvo S40 is also a great ski car. Flip down the opening in the back seat and easily put in two sets of carving skies and we are off with the front wheel drive up snowy mountain roads. I bought my used 1999 model at low cost and did it just for this graduate student who wanted to learn how to ski. Its probably her that makes this car very dear to me.

Definite buy for anyone who wants a big car or just wants comfort. But looking at statistics if your more of a town driver you can get 33MPG but I would go for the 1.9D SE model diesel which is around 50MPG.

Let's start with the bad points as they are really the bit you are interested in.
The first thing to note is that the Volvo S40 series has been on the road from 1994 onwards and there are a plethora of different models. Prior to May 2000 Volvo produced the S40 model outside Sweden. In fact the S40 was the very first car to be built outside of the country and ultimately fell foul to a number of production problems.
Produced in the same factory as Mitsubishi, the S40 has a Mitsubishi engin ...
