“I bought my Ford Ikon 1.3 Flair (Anniversary) in 2005...”

★★★★☆

written by sourabhc on 05/11/2008

I bought my Ford Ikon 1.3 Flair (Anniversary) in 2005 and I feel that the car is good. Never had major issues except couple of visits to the Authorised Service centres on top of the regular servicing visits.
As I mentioned, reverse gear is a problem many times and AC acts funny at times. I never encountered issues while driving anywhere and the fuel economy is never a problem. (City - 11-12kmpl, Highway -- 16-19kmpl). The car is worth every pie you spend. The spares also decently priced (though a little expensive when you are replacing a major part!). Otherwise, warranty is decent. You should never go to a Service centre which is not Ford authorized due to chances of spurious parts getting fitted in.
Overall, I am happy with my car and would strongly recommend this to all prospective buyers who are unsure about the choices available at this cost.

“Ford does advertise that the Ikon comes in for an emi...”

★★☆☆☆

written by Ikon tips and traps on 24/11/2003

Ford does advertise that the Ikon comes in for an emi of a small car but what they do not say is what goes in for maintenance.

the parts are very expensive, I had to change the oil seal gasket after 20000 kms and the gasket costs Rs. 1200 but the labour for this costs 2200 and together is costs Rs. 3500/-.

So though the initial cost of an ikon 1.3 comparable with other B segment cars, it maintenance is very way too expensive and is no way comparible.

The comments given by the reviewer are inaccurate. I purchased the IKON in India in March 2000. My experience has been distressing and disappointing--both with the vehicle as well as the service and support.
I have replaced the following during the first year and two months:
1. Fuel Pump
2. Brake Callipers
3. Brake Pads (twice in addition to cleaning them twice)
4. Cleaning of the fuel tank
5. Shock Absorber
6. Battery
7. Coil
In addition, I have sent it to the workshop (FORD Authorised) at least one dozen time (over and above the normal maintenance service).
The fuel consumption is appalingly low. It gives 6-7 km/litre in the city and 8-9 km/ litre on the highway.
They call it the JOSH (Force) machine in India. The only thing it uses Josh on is the wallet.
The service levels are appalingly low. The mechanics do not appear adequately trained.
Considering that in India one pays a fortune (based on Purchasing Power Parity of US $1 being equal to Indian Rupees 10), one expected a level of service one expects on a Mercedez purchase in the US or UK.

Cool_Dude.'s Response to abbot.'s Review

the reviewer had written this report as would any new ford ikon owner. the car as a brand new buy is an owner's pride, the engine peppy and the josh mode full on. however the total cost of owning the car comes as a rude shock considering the very expensive spare parts, poor after sales service and niggling electrical problems. i bought 1.6 zxi in sept. 2000, the year of the josh. following is a brief list of my car breakdowns which required complete or partial part replacement.
1. ignition coil ( 3800 INR)
2. fuel pump -- motor burnt but had to replace complete unit since ford doesnot sell pump and motor as separate units. ( 8000 INR)
3. left front door power window switch catches FIRE( 1500 INR)
4. tachometer fluctuates once engine temperature is normal.( 8000INR)
5. PCM or the car's engine management system short circuits( 35 000 INR). this part is supposed to remain good thru out the life of the car!!!
6. No. 2 cylinder suction valve holding cotter broken causing valve to hit piston therby damaging piston. Ford tells me to replace complete cylinder head instead of one valve assembly for one unit. by this time i'm frustrated and buy a second hand cylinder head from a friend. ( 20000INR)
7. Power steering mechanism oil seal fails. ford tells me to replace complete unit instead of just a simple oil lip seal. ( 15000 INR)
8. Starter motor stuck after rainy season. replaced with new( 5500 INR)

this list does not include the frequent gasket changes near the coolant probe and fuel filter change after i started using SPEED.
However the josh in the car always makes me have second thoughts about selling the car. ford hit it big time with the launch of this car but it's marketting could not keep up. customer service is so poor that u always leave their authorised outlets less convinced about their fault finding abilities.

I disagree completely with the reviewer and agree with some of the other readers on their views. The Ikon's suspension is too hard and the car is very light making it feel powerful without stability and safety. The high boot also makes it pretty difficult to backup .... I have been driving cars for many years now and I find the visibility very low as compared to other cars available in the market. Also the dash and other parts seem to be made of cheap material.
The plus points ....? I guess its the looks.

Da Vinci.'s Response to abbot.'s Review

City driving conditions in Mumbai mean you are travelling at the speed of 20kmph if you are lucky. In the worst case u are just shifting fom neutral to 1st gear, move a few inches and go neutral again... I would not expect to get a better mileage in those conditions. 1.6 is double the size of M800.. and in such conditions M800 gives about 12/13 ... so Ikon is bound to go down to 7/8 kmpl.
