I've had my ZR for 4 months now and since owning it I haven't driven it a day when it hasn't been broken.... seriously. When I bought it it was F@£&)d , I've replaced HG , had the pistons out for some new seals, new temp sensor , MAP sensor, timing changed, new ht leads, spark plugs , had new oil twice , new coolant twice, new oil filter twice and have had redex through the engine. Basically is cuts out when cold but when warm it's perfectly fine, three separate mechanics don't know what... (read more)

What a great car, owned mine for a while now, not a single problem, hasnt missed a beat. I'v heard all about the head gaskets, no such problem. Although when i first bought it i did replace it with a performance one, and its done me good, more peace of mind than anything else. I regularly service it, fresh oil and filter every 3 months just to keep it all fresh.
To drive though, what a joy, brilliant handeling and very quick off the lights, good to modify to, the stainless steel exhaust on...

I love my MG ZR 105!
Ive had it 2 months now and it is my first car. I think that it looks brilliant and although it is based on the old rover 25, i think that MG have done a smashing job at beefing up the old girl into a sports car.
I mean god knows how they managed it with a socket set and a gift voucher from halfords, but MG made one hell of a hot hatch!
Performence wise i think that its 0 - 60 time is respectable, as you can leave a lot of boy racers in tuned up saxos for dust at the...

Anyone i have encountered and mentioned I have an MGZR, immediately shakes their head n says"ooooh, head gaskets a problem". However ,although my HG did go in my last one- i know many people who have one / who've had one n never had a problem,. These people, i believe are better than I was at keeping up to oil / water checks and frequently change the oil filter. Apparently, this makes the MGZR a happy n reliable car :) unfortunately, my old one was written off by a racer overtaking around a corner, but I have a 5dr now and I would buy another if the one I have now goes> Strong, reliable car. :)

I had a chance to buy on 02 plated astra. I wish I'd grabbed it!! So far on top of normal servicing, I've had the head gasket pack up and now the battery's gone! Not the most reliable. I wouldn't recommend one to anyone and certainly won't buy one in the future!! However I must admit the engine is very lively for a 1.4. I wish I'd known about the head gasket weakness before I'd bought it. Ok for show but that's all. (read more)

Only thing i have hated with this car is the doors very cheap parts as i have had both front windows stop working and cost me 250 each side and once i couldnt open my door from the inside cost nothing tho haha as they fitted a temp part to pass mot but still works a year later :). apart from that 2 tyres and a mid and back exhaust but that wear and tear to me.

I think this car is more of a toy than a everyday type car.
It's reasonably quick and sticks to the road very well and the MPG isn't too bad.
Then reality kicks in! The stiffend suspension will wear your pelvis out on long jounrney's. The 1.4 16v engine has a weak headgasket. I've done about 50,000 miles now in mine and it's showing signs of the headgasket going but I hear a lot of them go at 20,000-30,000.
The interior is decent enough pretty straight forward everything is wear it...

If you get a chance to buy the MG ZR 1.4 105 facelift model brand new or 1 owner for a reasonable price then you should do it. If you are like me then the car just speaks for itself they are amazing to look at and drive. You can drop the prices at dealerships to about £7995-8995 depending on the extras on the car. Parts are still readily accessable and cheap to replace parts, there is no problem with getting parts through the internet or a dealer. (read more)

The first thing that surprised me about the MG ZR was the amount of total strangers who have come up to me and complimented me on my car. Beautiful and gorgeous are some of the many words they've used to describe what they think of it. I've heard bad reports about ZR's build quality being a bit naff, but I've had no such problems with mine. No rattles or squeaks anywhere even after having done 13+k miles. I'd also been told that the engines are prone losing their oil a bit but oil changes... (read more)

I bought my 51 plate red MG ZR sports car last month and i'm really chuffed with it, I had one before about 2 years ago and these cars are excellent, very reliable on the mechanics side.
They just have a few trim problems like door handles parting company, but parts are cheap, these problems have probably been cleared up on the revised ZR.

Look mate i agree with you on everything except for you saying the build the build quality is not so good!! British build is always the best mate!
Do you like BMW? I think they are rubbish!
Keep on buying british mate, they are the best! Do you have the the exaust heat shield bumper above the exaust? With the 160 you have a twin exaust which includes the heat shield!

Hi, I have a MG ZR TD+ with all extras. I am also modding the car. Before any performance enhancements I am putting the 160 brakes on the front. They fade quickly when giving it some. I have found a plug and play chip which takes it to 135bhp and more importantly 300nm torque. More than enough acceleration to take on the golf tdi 150.

Have had my zr105 for 2 years now and overall I am not impressed. It looks ok and handles good but the engine is total rubbish!! Always overheating, air blocks in the cooling system, back box rotted away and now the head gasket has gone! Rover should have stuck with their previous honda engines!!!!

Theres loads of scope for the ZR, I picked one up recently an 06' plate which has some minor changes from what I guess is the mk1. It's ignition blue pearl (great colour and not too many going around!) black tinted windows with some black 17s and black lexus style rear light clusters. I've lowered it 30mm (struts and springs) it looks great, nice and subtle not too 'in your face'. Just put on a new sports air filter which along with the oval back box sounds pretty sweet! Next is remapping the engine to get some more power out the fairly nippy standard 14i. Im told its possible to add a NOS system... watch this space!
