“Car was nice, but service terrible ”

★★☆☆☆

written by Captanwoodsy on 11/12/2023

First the good news hired a VW tigra convertible, was a lovely clean new car as described, no issues with the car, Unbelievable bad customer service unhelpful rude even slammed the phone down on me when I couldn’t find the area to leave the car in when finished, I have never been to Gran Canerie airport before it is massive and busy I didn’t even know it had two floor leveles, or how to get to the car parks I asked directions or where they was they didn’t help at all just park in lower level P1 which in the end after an hour of running frustratedly around the airport trying to find their office or the way to the parking P1 area finally found them after another more helpful car rental company told me they was on the floor below right at the end tucked in behind a gate and post, again they just said area P1 go to the end of the road which is so busy and roads leading off in all directions with no sign for P1 as it wasn’t even the same place I picked the car up from, I asked if they could send someone up to come with me to show me where it is as time was getting on and I was getting late for my flight and it was so hot and frustrating they totally refused in a rather rude manner, I said ok I just have to leave the car at the entrance they said no you won’t go park it in our area I said I would if I knew where it was and how to get there, this went on for an hour in the end I just had to start driving all around and finally found another area where there was lots of rental cars it was a different place to where I collected it from baring in mind they didn’t come with me to expand the car on collection of check the vehicle over, just handed me thr keys said lower level 28 so I walked dragging my luggage with me out the building into a multistory car park and went walked nearing to the other end of thr lower level carpark, to row 28 no car I was so hot thirsty I manage to google their phone number and phoned them they said rather directly not row 28 number 28 I am like ???? There is thousands of cars parking on this level alone without numbers only row numbers, I asked for them to show me they said no go to 28 very in politely and certainly unhelpful when their was 3 of them sitting in the office someone could of saved me a lot of unnecessary stress and frustration, the very worst customer service I have ever witnessed, as I said when I collected and worse when I dropped the car off the service girl slammed the phone down on me when I fiannky parked the car up I went to Hand the keys in she was gone obviously hiding out the way the way, why couldn’t they just sent someone up or had sone sort of printed map of the massive airport and where to park up,

“Not as expected. car in poor condition”

★★☆☆☆

written by Wesoxford on 03/09/2017

Expected a larger car than we received. All tyres were very worn, yet legal. Dents and scrapes all round. Lack of power, really struggled with any incline. Brake fluid warning light on most of the time, indicating brakes worn out. Air conditioning not very effective.

“Old Car and Average Service ”

★★☆☆☆

written by IANBKERR on 11/10/2016

I recently hired a car at Fuerteventura Airport with Auto Reisen. The queue at the hire desk wasn't all that long however it took a very long time to get to the front where I was told to make my way to the car park. At the kiosk in the car park I was given the keys of a very old looking Citroen despite booking a VW Polo or similar. The car was certainly not of a high specification - manual rear windows however it did have working aircon. Even though it was petrol it sounded like a diesel engine! OK it wasn't the most expensive car hire and we got by for the 2 weeks. If your looking.

I advise anyone thinking about hiring a car from this company to think again. They might be cheaper than some of the other car hire companies but their customer service is just not good enough. We arrived in Lanzarote and collected our nice new red Peugeot 308 cc. The transaction was quick. Off we went. The following day off we went to view the island. 10-15 miles down the road the Rt back tyre burst, we got off the road and phoned Autoreisen, their response was change the tyre yourself, after telling them we were both OAP's they said they would send out a new car!!!! My husband managed to change the tyre but we waited for the man with a van. A really lovely spanish man pulled up with another car and made us change the cars over although all we wanted was a new tyre. We went on our way, not 5 miles down the road the much older car lost its power in 3rd gear, so we phoned Autoreisen again. Well we ended up going back to the Airport to pick up car number 3. This is where we got stung, they refused to let us go until we payed 95eur for a broken wheel(no evidence was shown). As the tyre was defected and it was their fault that it burst we both felt that this was blackmail e.g no money no car. Don't use this company unless you want to get on the ground to change a tyre yourself or want to be fleeced.

“Seemingly good company let down by an old, broken car...”

We decided to hire a car for 7 days from Autoreisen (Tenerife south airport) based on the generally good reviews for their service. Unfortunately, the vehicle we had (an older Citroen C3) was absolutely the worst hire car I ever had for nearly 2 decades of travelling. Not only was the car full of scratches and dents with mismatching hubcaps, its interior was also dirty with many broken trims. The car squeaked alarmingly when driven over bumps and its indicator showed that it should have been serviced about 4000 km ago. Finally, we found out (too late) that the fuel gauge was also defective. On our way back to the airport to return the car, the gauge would not response to multiple top-offs at petrol stations until it suddenly jumped to full after we spent an extra €30 in fuel (we only needed to top-off to half). When we complained it to the return office clerk, she was not surprise at all as it appeared to be a common problem with the car. Sadly, I don't think our car was an isolated case as I could easily identify Autoreisen Citroen C3s in Tenerife by their mis-matching hubcaps! Although the staffs at Autoreisen offices are generally courteous, ultimately they cannot do anything to reimburse us and their on-line reservation service offered no help. Try them at your own risk but if you do, make sure you insist on a newer vehicle, if they have any.

“Slow service, unhelpful staff”

written by simonashUKtravel on 10/04/2014

Just used Autoreisen in Lanzarote for a week. Here's my experience. Picked up the car at the airport but had a long wait to do so with very slow service at the counter. Had requested a Ford Focus which was a driver as to why I went with this company. Turns out they don't have any Ford Focus cars and most are Citreons, which are not to my taste. The car was sold to me with 3/4 tank of fuel but in fact only had 1/4 of a tank. That's a difference of 35 euros if I hadn't seen it. The car also had dents on it front and back. None of the scratches/dents were marked on the sheet and no one showed me to the car or showed me around. I just got a set of keys and made my way to a numbered bay where I picked up the car. Luckily my girlfriend was well on the ball and we got all of our paperwork flagged with all the points we noticed. Overall I cannot recommend this lot. The only saving grace was the fact that on return to the airport after my holiday there was no fuss and no charges were added so they did stick to the price quoted. There are plenty of other choices for car hire in Lanzarote. Shop around.

I did the same once then it was pointed out to me there is nothing to pay on the insurance and no deposit on your card that's why they don't bother marking down any bumps scratches etc nobody is held responsible.

“LACK OF CUSTOMER SERVICE”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 22/03/2014

On arrival at Tenerife North airport we were upgraded to a BMW car but given very minimal information on controls on how to start the car using a fob instead of key ignition. It was dark and pouring of rain, outside parking, no lighting and great reluctance to assist even though my husband and I are in our 70's and he is disabled. I have written to Autoreisen three times and have not received any acknowledgement of my complaint or apology for bad service. The price is right but at the cost of service.

“financial issue with fuel..be careful !!”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 04/02/2014

Car was ok and very cheap, but they charged me incorrectly for extra fuel. Got the car with +3/4 tank and returned full. That was a profit for them, but after returning home my account was charged with 9 euros. After sending email they stated that there was not enough fuel in tank! They claim not to earn money with fuel, but this seems to me proving the opposite.

“Rent a Wreck!”

★★☆☆☆

written by Richard104 on 20/09/2012

4th September 2012 Tenerife South. Having had great experience with Goldcars at Mercia Airport I was surprised at the overall poor reviews so decided to rent from Autoreisen in Tenerife South, again, based on reviews. Mistake! My Ford Focus had 104,000 km on the clock and had dents and scratches on every panel. The paperwork showed half a tank of fuel so with an indicated quarter in the car I returned to the desk where the lady immediately manually altered just my copy of the documents. I went along with that and mentioned that the car was dented and scratched everywhere but with no indication of any marks on the paperwork. She said it was fine and it was clear discussion of the matter was not possible. The rental was uneventful and there were no frighteners on my credit card afterwards but I really felt short changed and, when driving around Tenerife, looked the poor man of Europe. Never again so back to Goldcars.

“You Pay for a Radio, You Should Get a Radio”

★★☆☆☆

written by srbaruchi on 15/04/2012

The title expresses my key complaint. Online, every car (and class of car) for rent is shown to have a radio. My automatic -- rented 3/12 from the north airport on Tenerife -- did not. By the time I realized this, I was more than half way down the island. Autoreisen has not responded to two emails asking them for a partial reimbursement. What kind of customer service is that, to just ignore two written complaints? In addition, upon pickup, the car had an empty tank. I'm a stranger in a strange car in a strange land, zapped from hours of flying, not sure how to get to my hotel, and now I have to go find a gas station. Again, what kind of service is that? To the company's credit, a manager escorted me to the closest station, and filled the tank. Autoreisen did have a very good rate, and the vehicle was in good condition; however, my recommendation to any foreign traveler would be to go with a major brand (Hertz, Avis, Alamo, etc.). You have a better chance of receiving good service if something goes awry.

“I booked a Renault Twingo for 12 days at Tenerife...”

★★☆☆☆

written by on 29/01/2011

I booked a Renault Twingo for 12 days at Tenerife South Airport. It turned out to be about 15 years old and was rattly and smelly. The clutch was difficult to operate as it engaged only at the last moment. The cost and insurance cover was good but there is a standard below which any car presentd for hire should not fall. I wonder if these cars are required to pass a Government test for safety and roadworthiness.

Yes. In Spain rental vehicles must pass the official revision (ITV) every year.
