I bought my Talex second hand and am very pleased with it. It did develope a fault (2blue LEDs) and after contacting customer support, I returned unit which was repaired free of charge, same fault few months later and again repaired free of charge; caused by loosing power from cigarette socket before unit had fully switched on (unit could do with an On/Off button) I solved it by fitting a relay in a box operated by a push button. Excellent unit, never missed a camera or potential mobile camera site. Just purchased another, (2nd hand) but the Talex Lite model for my company van, seems every bit as good. Definitely recommend this but being a cheapskate, I wouldn't buy new (eBay a lifesaver or licence saver) particually like the verbal warning ("Reduce Speed") if you drift above the speed limit when approaching a camera/mobile site.

My first Talex broke down within 2 months - no voice. Replacement took 6 weeks. My second Talex lost its voice within another 9 months and has now completely packed in. Approx 1.5 years. I will definitely be buying a Snooper or similar.

I have had the Talex lite for a number of years. From buying and plugging in it has been no problem at all. it is very accurate on fixed and mobile cameras plus it picks up traffic light cameras. I don't know what some of the other reviewers have been doing but my wife and I think it's great. Just one thing I agree that the support needs a shake up.

I bought a Talex years ago but never used it as it was too much hassle. Recently I purchased a car with very poor wiring and the speedo was faulty. (It is a car made for towing things which is its big bonus)The Talex was put into service but it seemed intermittent and at first I suspected the cigar lighter socket. Nope, today it went belly-up after just a few weeks use. When I bought it I paid about £180, what a waste, using it has worked out at about £60 per week. The reliability needs to be improved.

Talex Kit Speed Trap Detection is a compact unit and reasonably priced. Appears to be accurate with no false announcements. It usually takes several attempts to connect to Talex site for updating data. Poor quality speaker gives distorted sound.

Talex lite is small and easy to use, and quick to set up. It's cheap to buy, easy to use, but does'nt do what it says on the box.

Same here my life time subscription to their database has been turned off.
thank you Adam Blair .!!!!

This is the reply I got when I complained about my so called 'Lifetime Subscription' expiring...
'When the original owners forced the company into Administration they did so with massive debts. The back office records were also in a mess and dates for subscriptions did not match or follow any reasoning. Whilst under no obligation to do so we decided to allow all previous customers who purchased direct from Talex a full 36 months subscription. From this single action we ensured that the vast majority did not lose out. I am sorry but any arrangements between the previous owners and any third party company were lost with the failure of that company. We are certain that you will in fact have lost no monies and that will be the case for many thousands of customers. If you wish to purchase subscription at the previous rate of £29 for one year and £59 for 3 I will be happy for Sally to arrange this.' It's going in the bin!

Poor device, my life time subscription to their database has been turned off.
They cited the fact that they bought the company after I had purchased the device and gave me 36 months subscription.
There are many more reports of legal loop holes and broken agreements that mean that you need to beware of this product and the company.
The device itself maybe great, but without the customer service and database of cameras it is useless... and the database is in the hands of Adam Blair.

I have owned the Talex now for around 6 months and got it through the free promotion which i thought was too good to be true! After a delay in delivery I finally recieved it when said. Struggled at first to download the updates but contacted them by e-mail and they responded very quickly and resolved the problem. I am more than impressed with this device and is always spot on, even warning you of potential mobile traps.Certainly glad I purchased this device, its neat, well made and does what it says on the tin. Highly recommended.

Good device. Good price. Spare part back up non-existent, so if anything goes wrong.... My cigar lighter plug broke. That's it. They are helpful but don't carry spares! I can't even buy one! Should have bought a Road Angel!

Talex Lite is the best device with accurate reading of speed and information it gives.
I have been using it for past year or so and it certainly makes the driver aware of road safety. Depending on road, traffic and weather conditions, one is able to drive in safety, without resorting to turn into an F1 Driver.

I have had a Talex lite for nearly 3 years and have had major problems everytime I need to update the data. The download does not work, the phone numbers on the web site do not work and if you send an email to Technical support it will be returned as undeliverable. This is not acceptable when they are charging £24.99 for 1 year of updates and nearly £50 for 3 years.
If you are thinking of buying a Talex - dont until you have tried their support numbers and email

Talex Lite is a good all rounder with a great database and even beats some of the sat nav databases including a well known pocket gps database which seems more intent of removing live sites than keeping it on the database.

Talex Lite went faulty within months of purchase and was returned to Talex . I am still waiting for a replacement! Blue led's too bright at night, a real distraction. Talex are not very customer service orientated

I ordered and paid for a 3 year update for my Talex lite in August 2008. No update has come nor have they responded to emails, phone or even recorded delivery letters.

Have spoken with trading standards in Bromley. They advise using consumer direct for problem so if enough people complain then they will take action. Apparently there is some sort of league table for traders who breach regulations and those at the top are acted on.

I bought my Talex Lite in April 2007 and found it was great at spotting the camera's although warns you a little too late for mobile cameras. My subscription ran out this year and they didn't contact me to renew but I can still update over the net even now.
However, I have noticed over the last 2-3 months that some cameras which were previously being caught are now being missed which means I no longer trust the Talex.
Talex were bought out last year and I think the database has gone downhill since. They also used to send spam mail giving it the hard sell. I think the new company is a bunch of cowboys.

Talex lite good. After sales bad will not send out the 3 year subscription which I have paid for. What good is it if I can not up date it.

Ive been trying to buy the 3 yr subscription kit now for the last 3 weeks and no one at Talex will confirm they have received my order. Sadly they don't return phone calls or reply to Emails.
I would certainly advise to take caution if you are considering the possibility of an update kit being available.

I believe Talex have been taken over. The downloads in future will be free, so don't send off for a subscription kit!
This would explain the poor customer service. They have been Ok in my experience.

It may say its free but buyer beware. Unless you purchased the more expensive £80+ kit you will need a subscription kit to download new sites because you don't get the cd/rom or code's or USB cable to up date,1 year £35, 3 years £59 bit of a rip off really so its not actually free just clever marketing.

I disagree with this review because...
This is a very good unit but the company is being taken over and this may explain the poor service.

My Talex purchase has been a disaster - inaccurate and a re-pack, although bought as a new unit. This arrived in a tatty box and when a "replacement" unit was supplied they merely put the original in yet another tatty box and returned to me. They do NOT reply to E-mails. This is the maker! Fails to detect correctly and gives many false alerts. Speed statements are erratic and could land one in trouble.
Currently awaiting a returns number, but I'm 100% sure they will not supply after my previous experience.

Have had my Talex Lite now for 6 months and am still delighted with it - bought the renewal subscription on-line, again with no problems. I have purchased from Talex (£3.25) an additional magnetic mount which makes the device portable between our two cars.

Snap!!! you'r not the only one. Killed ALL the cars electrics dead. I returned it for a refund, but they would not accept the parcel & returned it unopened. What a waste of money, plus it cost £7.00 postage. Its cheaper to risk a fine!!!
