“Data Quality”

Written on: 14/06/2013 by Darleith (1 review written)

I love the scanned original images with which to work. The hints feature has lots of good links to original data but also has links to an enormous amount of rubbish. There are professional genealogists who use the site for the original data but then are the copy/paste merchants who just seem to want to have the biggest tree and copy everything without giving it too much thought. I got no problem with what they to their own trees but get really annoyed when I am swamped with their rubbish... (read more)

“Ancestry is an escape!”

Written on: 13/06/2013

Once I get on the site, I can't seem to leave! I was able to find an aunt in the 1940 census that I had been unable to locate. I have found out some things I didn't know previously. I've laughed, I've cried, I've shared, and have found that most people want to be helpful. I have recommended Ancestry.com many times to friends, Family and acquaintances. (read more)

It is difficult to move through the app with the result that you can miss a step. It doesn't have the functionality of the desktop version, which still does not have drag and drop functionality. Hints cannot be accepted or rejected when there is an obvious answer. (read more)

“Found my half brother who never knew I existed”

Written on: 11/06/2013 by Trish1225 (1 review written)

Without Ancestry.com I would never have known that my father changed his surname between leaving his first family and meeting my mother, would never have found the half brother and his family in Illinois and Wisconsin, would never have known that I have Cherokee in my background. Pretty amazing stuff! I grew up as a "white bread" only child on the East Coast and felt pretty alone after my parents died - now I have a half brother, several "blood" nieces and a nephew in the mid west, and a... “Ancestry.com has helped me find relatives I have heard...”

Written on: 10/06/2013 by Essentialady

Ancestry.com has helped me find relatives I have heard about, but now I have actual documentation for. I connected with a relative I had never met on my maternal grandmother's side whom she never knew. My only issue is that even with World status, I cannot get information from certain other countries, such as Cuba, where my paternal grandfather was born. Hopefully, Ancestry.com will develop some type of relationship with record keepers in Cuba so I can connect to that family without... (read more)

“Most Complete Collection”

Written on: 05/06/2013 by Ron-J (1 review written)

Ancestry.Com is the most complete data base available for the user. It has an interactive search program. Privacy for live people is assured. Owner has total control of data. The most complete tutorial program available. The hint system works great. I highly recommend this program over others, if though it is a bit more costly. If there are any negatives it is easy to create duplicate people and tree "spurs". It is not that easy to find the "spurs" and it is not easy to know where... (read more)

“Ancestry.com Best online Genealogy as far as im concerned”

Written on: 04/06/2013

People talk about the cost of Ancestry in many of the reviews that I read and I'm not sure if there is anyway to compare it to anything else except foot work. I sure can't afford to go to Germany or even Illinois to find out about my relatives as I'm on a very fixed income. I give up coffee and a magazine subscription and I don't miss them But I would miss my Ancestry! I think it is the greatest thing in the world for people like myself who can't get out and do the research because of... (read more)

“Ancestry.com is best of the bunch!”

I would give 5 stars if ancestry was a little cheaper, but in content they are a 5 star. I've recently been looking at other sites and when I got back to ancestry it was such a pleasure. It was like putting on you slippers when you got home after a long day. If you have Family Tree Maker too you have the added bonus of syncing your tree. No worry about loosing your hard work if your pc crashes, just download it again from ancestry. I'm lucky that years ago I made the right choices. A dynamic... (read more)

You can have all your records with you at all times, your laptop, phone or E-reader. The DNA results are great. “Wish I had started climbing my family tree earlier ...”

Written on: 31/05/2013 by yourstory_mypen (1 review written)

Genealogy is such an interesting hobby, in person as well as online. On the positive side, Ancestry.com has been very helpful to me as I sort through the "ready made" tree I inherited from a great aunt. I suspect she found our surname in a book and thought the information was about our ancestors. However, sourcing the entries is a good way to make good research habits. Negatively, even though I'm glad for the hints and helpful search categories, I'm put off by the new features being... (read more)

“My Family Trees”

Hi, I'm not searching 1 tree, but 3. My dad's, my stepmother and my husbands. The one I've gotten the most on is my dad's. I found we are related to "Kit Carson", Daniel Boone, and as far back to King Richard the Lionheart. Many more people than I can even mention here. I haven't gotten very far with my other families. They are either from England, Germany, Hungary or Italy. It's been interesting though, and I hope to find many more people. I'm not too crazy about the DNA test... (read more)

“Ancestry.com daily use”

Written on: 30/05/2013 by cyndilbutler

I use Ancestry.com on an almost daily basis and thoroughly enjoy the search. I fight the "new" stuff but eventually come around and wonder how I ever used the "old." My only frustration is when a feature does not work, but I just report it and in the blink of an eye (well, okay, maybe the next day) it is fixed. "Free" time periods and holidays are frustrating when so many people are tying to access. It seems to run at a snail's pace then and so I try to avoid using during those times. ... (read more)

I have found so much information on Ancestry over the years. It is usually easy to navigate and the help desk will guide you or fix you up gladly when you call. It's a little expensive if you want to get into the world records. They should offer senior discounts to make it more affordable, as grand parents are more often the people with the time (but not the resources) to climb the trees. Over all, I am pleased. I have been a family historian/genealogist for over 35 years. I discovered Ancestry.com about seven (7) years ago. It was fairly simple to use then and is even easier today. The biggest asset to family research is the HUGE amount of data in the system. The next advantage is it's ease of use AND levels of help available. You can "keep it simple" or dive into the "bowels" of the data with some advanced tools. It is not, however, an end all be all. To utilize the available tools and... (read more)
