Overall, its a BMW and that says it all. Contrary to reports that I've read, everything is typical MBW quality. However that are several points that need to be bore in mind. The 1.6 engine is just about acceptable but be prepared to use the gears. If for instance, you're traveling at seventy on a motorway or dual carriageway and you have to slacken speed to say about sixty, don't expect to pull away in top (sixth) gear. I found that in fact, virtually every other car pulled away from me and I had to change down to fifth and sometimes even fourth to keep up with their acceleration. I'm not criticizing the performance, merely saying that its something to be aware of if you're thinking of buying a 1.6 BMW. Having said that, the drive is as smooth as one could wish for. I once heard it said that if you're going to buy a manual geared car, buy a BMW and that is indicative of the BMW manual gearbox. In a Sport model, expect a hard ride. OKay for the driver who has the steering wheel for support but the passenger may find the ride uncomfortable to say the least. Regard the room as adequate rather then spacious especially in the back where its decidedly tight. The controls are typically MBW not only in in design but also in practicality. Would I buy another? Yes but would bear in mind what I have written. If you do you won.t be disappointed and derive great pleasure from what is a very pleasurable motor car.
Remember this a drivers car in every respect so the emphasis is on all things driving.

The BMW 116i is a good little hatch, great handling and nice to drive. If you have a family then probably a bit small but if you do lots of driving on your own and only occasionally use the other seats then its fine. Engine runs nice and smooth and although not a powerfull hatch it goes well enough. If you want power buy a Golf GTI. A BMW badge and good after sales make this a great buy.- Read PaulLeith's review (99 words)

Review actually for 120d SE Auto
Probably the most disappointing car I've ever owned. The expected excellent BMW driving characteristics compromised by untrustworthy brakes and gearbox, the traction was poor, especially when wet. The ABS actuated unnecessarily on occasions (5 in 500 miles), these were all during low effort braking manoeuvres in good conditions. The performance was excellent, most of the time; unfortunately some journeys the gearbox refused to change down gear when required, r ...- Read niva441's review (476 words)
