Good Points: Style
performance
handling
the stereo increases volume when you excellerate
very quite
Bad Points: Known for a faulty gearbox
Not the best for fuel economy in a world of increasing green pressure
It may cosy you speeding points or your licence as it speeds up unknowingly
General comments: My VW Golf 1.8T (GTi Turbo - 150bhp) and me have had some serious fun over the past four years.
It is a great car, with loads of power, handles well, and once I replaced the Pirelli 6000 tyres with Michelin premacy's it actually stuck like glue cornering.
All golfs have a water pump issue (you must be driving it well) and also the MK4's have a gearbox issue/fault, even that aside it is stilla 10/10 car,.
It can be a family car or a wee race machine, depending on how quick you want to drive it and how much fuel you want to spend.
It ranges from 250 miles per tank around town to almost 400 miles per tank on an open road (without heavy peddeling it).
Its quick, comfortable and safe.
Enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine :)

I have had my Gti for about 3 months. I got it used so it had some issues that i needed to get fixed. It is however a great and powerful car for a 1.8 liter engine. It holds up well and accelerates very quickly. I would recomend this.- Read Guest's review (49 words)

I'v had my Volkswagen Golf GTI 1.8T Turbo for 2 years and i must say it's great, faster than my old Ford RS Turbo, and it drives so well due to the independant rear suspention. it looks great like a proper classic. Faster than the 2.0L Gti this is great car. 0-60 in 8.4 Sec Top speed 140. Plus lots of engine and turbo mods out there. A1- Read jasonf222's review (65 words)

Had my Volkswagen Golf for 15 months had to have the water pump changed but this is a common fault i am led to be believed ,if yours goes make sure they change it with a metal impeller as the plastic ones corrode, and mines only done 30,000 miles.Other than this is a great car decent sized boot ,nice interior. If you want a great all rounder theres none better.- Read leightonb's review (92 words)

I've had my gti for 2 years now and it's never let me down. In that time I've become a dad and the boot can hold all the things you need for a short holiday or a day out. I don't have plans to change it the future unless it's for another one in the same colour and engine. GTi and vw golf fit perfect together.- Read Guest's review (110 words)

Easy on gas and very sporty, a real head turner. Great handling, though I ' ve seen one user say that his Mrs. lost it during a corner at a low speed (excuse me mate but you're Mrs. can't drive for toffee, I took many sharp turns at least 120kmh and never left my lane), reasonably easy to medium to maintain and great interior
Bought one 5 months ago at a mere 7600 euros, full extras. Got it an hkn air filter, a borla exhaust and an hks bov and it ' s just in the center of attention. Couldn't be ...- Read Alexutz's review (106 words)

My Golf Gti 1.8 T is an amazing ride, I always get compliments. This is a car I want to run into 500k. I don't think I could upgrade, unless to a 4 door. Fast, smooth, car that can still hold up to quick aggressive curves.
Amazing blue light interior, very sharp and trendy looking. Car sounds and looks sexy.
The turbo that whistles always turns heads! What a great feeling! I can see why some say pocket rocket, not to mention great on gas! I love always having a place to park.- Read omarelias's review (172 words)

Wonderful transmission, fun to drive, great clean and smooth lines. This car is fast, and still easy on gas. It is lighter than the MkV GTI and has only 20 fewer hp.
I wish I had a six speed.- Read vwgti20v's review (38 words)

This is a shame as the car is good looking, lots of extras and smooth to drive. At the time of owning this car I had a standard Escort RS Turbo which walked all over the Golf. You just don't get enough from that Turbo. You want it to push you back in the seat and be aggressive and mean and make lots of noise but it's silent and you would think it was just a 1.8. The handling was comical and we decided to sell this car after my Mrs lost it going around a dry roundabout (my Mrs never drives fast). ...- Read mboon's review (184 words)

I've just bought a Volkswagen Golf GTI 1.8T on a 'W' plate and after some initial concerns with an electrical problem caused by an incorrectly fitted car kit, I have to say I love this car. Compared to the Peugeot 206 XS I owned prior to this, it is simply on another level as a motor vehicle and I shiver to think what the R32's and new MK5's must be like. Yes, my Peugeot was fun and yes, it was easy to maintain, but here I have a turbo-charged car with a bigger engine that has equal fuel consump ...- Read emdubble's review (137 words)

Had my Jazz Blue 2 door Golf GTI 20v Turbo for about 2 months (my 6th Golf) Must say I'm loving it, the interior is such an improvement over the Mk2's and Mk3's so is the ride (so smooth) Lovely to hear that Turbo whistle! Power is not blistering but its more than enough. The car just looks so nice and sits so pretty, the blue recardo's finish off the interior so well. As said before build quality is excellent, everything you'd expect from a Golf GTI. Expensive but highly recommended!- Read deano968's review (138 words)

Overall this Volkswagen Golf GTI 1.8T sports car is a class piece of engineering, its so well put toegether. This does make it heavy though which goes against the performance.
I would definately recommend one if its a good allrounder your after.- Read philbin12001's review (103 words)

I would definitely buy another VW Golf GTI 1.8T. Though they are expensive. I bought this one over a Mazda 6 Touring, though it was nice with many additional features, it did not have the power that the Golf has. Mine is 150bhp. I should have gone for the 180bhp.- Read boxer123's review (152 words)

I've had my 3 dr dark metallic blue VW Golf GTI 1.8T for 2.5 years, and I have never once thought about changing it for anything else. I'm just waiting for the Mk5 to come out.
It is pretty quick, 2nd and 3rd gear performance is great, just let the Turbo take care of the low down stuff, then keep your foot hard in until the 20 valves take over at 4500 rpm. And if you are feeling sad, put the drivers window down a tad and listen to the Turbo whistling away, that'll cheer you up.
Even after ...- Read danrcsmith's review (211 words and 1 comment)

Solid car, everything you would expect from a golf. GTI that has an achievable economy of 30-35 MPG. Very comfortable to drive.0-60mph 8.5 seconds, its not as fast as some of its competitors, but I feel a much better car. Expensive but holds its value.- Read Miteman's review (97 words and 1 comment)
