Having sold our previous house i was trying to arrange a mortgage with Abbey through my mortgage advisor. The Abbey offered us a mortgage in principal on condition we provided evidence of earnings. We provided the last 3 months wage slips as requested. 2 weeks later we chase our mortgage advisor to find out what was happening as the house we had an offer on was about to go back on the market as it was taking so long to sort out. At this point the Abbey then requested a letter from my wifes employer to confirm that she was on maternity leave and was due to return to work and what hours she was going back to. This letter was provided on the same day of request and now 4 days later we still have not had anything confirmed. As it stands we look likely to loose the property that we had an offer in on all due to the fact that Abbey have delayed providing the mortgage due to their poor organizational skills and poor training. It surely can't take 3 weeks to say yes or no.

Got a mortgage with Abbey about 2 years ago. As it is interest only, I am obviously keen to pay off lump sums as often as I can. And this is the trouble.
Twice I have tried to transfer fund from a German account to my Abbey account, and although I have been told this is easy and followed the instructions given to me by 2 different customer operators, the money was sent back by Abbey minus various fees and exchange rate losses. To cut a long story short, Abbey supplied the wrong information which ...- Read Guest's review (268 words)

My mortgage broker intoduced me to Abbey as they were the cheapest at the time, since then I have had 6 mortgage offers and not one is correct.
Unfortunatly time has now run out for me as I move in 3 weeks and I can not wait any longer for another offer (which would probably be wrong also) and have had to get an additonal loan for 6k to boost my deposit just because of Abbey's mistakes.
Soon as I have moved I will be complaining and just pray they can fix everything after the event, attempting t ...- Read Guest's review (115 words)

Abbey have been absolutely awful so far regarding our mortgage application. We applied over a month ago and since then they have lost pieces of important paperwork, ignored phone calls, and told us that the application would be processed when 'the girl who was responsible had got through the pile of papers on her desk'. It's ridiculous as we only want a yes or no answer!- Read Guest's review (66 words)

After being messed around by the Halifax for a mortgage, I thought Abbey was a breath of fresh air. I have virtually everything with Halifax (current account, car loan, all the insurances, savings, share dealing), but they were useless when it came to a FTB mortgage. Apparently they only want re-mortgage business now. Moving back to Abbey, they were recommended by family (loyal mortgage customer for 20 years), rang up late evening, swift telephone application with a wonderful young Scottish l ...- Read smartie's review (310 words)

I had a mortgage with Abbey for more than 25 years (2 houses). When I tried to pay off my mortgage early, they made it extremely difficult. They would not accept payments from my Abbey internet current account. They said they would only accept cheques by post with a covering letter, or personal payment at a branch. Even after I had paid off the full amount, it took 3 letters, 6 phone calls, 8 months and another £200 before I got my deeds.- Read WheathampsteadUser's review (94 words)

Having been an Abbey National customer for many years I acepted Abbey advice to change my existing Abbey margage to a capped rate, I could not lose. However, soon after Abbey brought in 'special rates' which undercut the standard variable rate leaving me stuck on an artificially high rate not what I understood would be the result of a capped rate mortgage. Abbey have refused to consider my requests to remortgage unless I pay more than £4,000 penalty. The tie in ends at the end of this ye ...- Read john mack's review (110 words)

The mortgage adviser at Abbey National was efficient, courteous and responded almost immediately to my phone calls. A matter I am sure that are not under her control was the £500 arrangement fee. My question is how can such a variation of prices be charges for a relatively similar cost for staff administration time and stationary costs? It is a little excessive as the interest we will be paying over the period of 18 years is making more than enough profit to cover this cost.- Read yvonnejefferies1's review (111 words)
