The banking service for Alliance and Leiceste had to be the most convoluted service I have ever used. It offers the most basic internet service ever. You have no control over your account and too often you have to call the bank to make changes and you have to do it by calling a premium number!! If you ever make the mistake of setting up a service over the phone, you better forget being able to make changes on the internet because again the only way you can get access to it is by calling them. My experience with the bank has been appalling!! I still have to go to Alliance and Leicester branches and there are far and few in between. Now that they are merging with Santander you can only expect it to be worse while the changes are occuring!! I wouldn't even give the bank a 1 star rating.

Reasonable service when working but be aware that paid in cheques take an age to clear so, although you get banking without any actual charges, they get their money by holding on to your cash. Also the website support is pitiful (to be kind) - I guess they save money by having no competent staff available at weekends which means if the system goes down, as it did last weekend, you can forget about using your money until at least Monday lunchtime! Avoid Avoid Avoid as your main bank account!

First off I will start by saying that every individual I have dealt with at Alliance and Leicester has been very pleasant; the issues however arise in relation to their knowledge. Getting a straight answer appears to be as difficult if not harder than getting blood from a stone.
The bank only seems to be interested in flogging me insurance no matter how many times I tell them I do not require it but they also seem very reluctant to assist me with any queries or requests I may have. This is a ba ...

What an awful bank. In the last year I have found them very difficult to deal with. If you don't have your account reference number with you (not your account number) impossible to communicate with them over the phone.
I recently had a chq book (the fourth one they've sent me in the last year even though I've used about 3 chqs) 'intercepted' in the post. £8000 was taken from my bank account and I'm still trying to get it back. I happened to be transferring some money from this account and ...

Awful bank - Hard to contact (if you don't have relevant details sent to you when you opened the account don't bother phoning as the robot asks you these details)
Website money transfers very complicated, tranfer between A/L accounts doesn't show up on the receipent account until the following day - it's a bloody computer - should be instant!!

Watch out when they phone you and say "can I give you some advice on how to prevent identity fraud" after 5 mins going on the punch line comes - "buy ins ...

I would not recommend this bank to an enemy let alone a friend!

Recently moved to work overseas. Due to trying to manage with the move and transferring finances over to UK my bank account exceeded my O/D limit by GBP 42.28 but was brought back within terms within the month. A&L have now levied GBP 249.00 worth of default charges for the period 1 August 2009 to 15 September 2009!

These charges are disproportionately high and therefore in breach of the Unfair Terms in Consumer Contract Regulatio ...

Alliance and liecester is a fraud... i have been charged £250 so far for going £0.85 overdrawn. this bank should be scrapped!!! they dont even have real people you can talk to @ their few branches in london. you have to talk over the phone as their current, premium and savings accounts are run over the phone. my advice for anyone looking to open an account is that this bank should not be on your list of options.

Useless bank with no customer service. I was left with no access to my money because online service they offer had no option to pay out from the account. You can pay money in but not take it out when you need them. Avoid.

This bank takes 1 day for inter-account online transfers between my own A&L accounts. And if I send money to my bank accounts at other banks or to someone else, it takes upto 3 days. This is such a big pain...
Compared to this, money transfers at every other bank I know of, are done instantly, within seconds. I don't know whether this is deliberate or other wise, but I do know that I am closing my A&L accounts soon. 6% on first £2500 is not enough to compensate for this discomfort.
    There a ...

I have been with the Alliance and Leicester for over 4 years, with several accounts i.e. premier current, savings and isa. Tried to open the online saver 5, long hassle with renewed identification etc. After several weeks of silence had to ring up and finally got an account number over telephone, however this did not activate for 10days or more, went to a branch where money was then transferred. Now both accounts are inactive, customer service completely useless and and rude. Their secure message ...

Alliance Leicester only get 1 star because there are no negative scores available. The logon rarely works 1st time and sending 'secure'. Online messages routinely takes several atempts and these messages NEVER get a useful response. As experienced by many other customers, it appears that the 100 GBP offer was difficult to aquire! The variety of excuses for not paying out is amazing. In my case Alliance Leicester refused the payment because direct debits were not included when I switched. The ...

Opened a Web account (Online Saver Issue 5) on 13th July, attracted by the interest rate and what I thought would be the ease of access via the internet. Received a customer number pretty much straight away.
"PIN number to follow in a few days" it said. I waited and waited and then after a week and a half I rang Alliance And Leicester. Sorry, we'll send you another. I waited a further week. It arrived. I tried it and it didn't work - account locked it said. I rang again and they said they ...

AVOID alliance and leicester internet banking!!
Applied for 2 a/cs on line - Premier Direct & Online Saver 5. On-line system worked, but not all info supplied to me - eg Sort Code for each a/c, to pay monies in. And they had opened a 3rd account (Plus Saver, paying 0.1%!!) for which I had not asked!
Rang their Call Centre - totally useless - could not find my details, account no.s not recognised, etc etc.
Cut off by one girl -no ring-back.
Rang them again - long telecon - what 2nd girl wa ...

I have been banking with Alliance and Leicester for over 5 years now and originally took the account after previously holding accounts with the Halifax and HSBC (who I would never, ever go to again). All I wanted was a straight forward account that had easy internet banking and could be linked to a savings account.

This was solved by the Premier Current Account which automatically comes with a savings account linked in. I can use fast transfer to make my regular payments and can see all account ...

Santander/Alliance & Leicester are the most incompetent and obstructive organization I have ever encountered. They are incapable of handling simple processes like address changes, share sales, or transfers between accounts without making a series of basic errors. Their Complaints Procedure and ' Customer Service ' are a sick joke. I am still waiting after more than six weeks to find out how they managed to ' misplace '£40,000 by transferring it from an ISA to a non-existent account.

    My ...

This is my experience, Made a transfer from Online savings account to nominated non A&L bank account. Both my own bank account and A&L are suppossed to be members of the 'Faster Payment Scheme'. ie Same Day Transfer (I wish, still waiting 3 plus days now) Their Terms and conditions which you can download state 'Same Day' if both banks as in this case are members of the Faster Payment Scheme. My gripes with A&L are that there is no facility (which I think is deliberate) to e-mail them via a secure ...

When wishing to modify my long held current account, I was quickly shepherded to sit with an advisor. I had already guessed this was to enable their selling of other `deals` to me and upfront, I stated that I did not wish any changes not related to my proposed amendment.
The hard sell technique ensued for various possibilities that I didn`t want, and after being asked for some irrelevant personal questions about my age and future plans, I again reminded the advisor that I simply wanted the smal ...

Alliance and Leicester internet banking is extremely limited in what it provides in terms of functionality- for example despite not receiving paper statements. you can only look back 9 months on line (no search here simply statement lists) and any further requires payment.Customer support is pretty think on the ground and provides very little in the way of support to you as the customer. Phone contact requires patience to speak to anyone and the secure messaging system often fails to elicit a re ...

Just moved from First Direct, who have have excellent customer service but they were hammering me on overdraft charges. I've moved to take advantage of the
Alliance And Leicester Internet Banking interest free overdraft for a year and the £100 bonus for joining them.
