    Good Points: Taut handling, good economy, punchy motor, wonderful gearbox, interior and plenty of X-factor.


    Bad Points: No room in the back for actual people, electrical problems that defied comprehension, repairs hurt the wallet, resale was appalling. I paid A66k in 2001 and Audi offered me 7k for it as a trade in in 2009. They must know how bad their product is. Throughout this time I had a Honda motorcycle that never broke down and when it came time to upgrade after some agonising I went with a japanese car. No problems and no regrets.


    General comments: Owned Audi A4 1.8T Quattro Sport for 8 years and put on about 145,000km. Replaced all coils twice, one at a time, that's 8 breakdowns. As part of this I twice had to be trucked home - once about 400km. Oil pump failed at 60k - fortunately no other damage there. Dash failed at 140k - dials went haywire. From week one the car had an intermittent management system failure and would lose all power on hills under load - you had to turn the ignition on and off to get accelerator response again. What fun it was at night coming up the F3 from the hawkesbury river bridge with other vehicles roaring up behind me. No one could ever find out what was wrong. Aside from all this it was a beautiful car - held its visual quality for 8 years and spent plenty of time on country roads getting dirty but no squeaks. Great seats, good sound system, oily gearbox made a better driver out of me. Excellent economy - averaged just over 7 litres per hundred km from Sydney to Brisbane. Balancing all this out I would never buy another Audi again.

    Since driving the Audi A4 1.8T Quattro Sport(brand new) I have had an incredible amount of problems most of them electrical. Although it is all covered by a very good warranty I have spent way too much time getting the car fixed. It has broken down twice, fuel injection and coils blew and have had to have the indicator lights changed no less than seven times among many other things. From what I have heard I have gotten off easy as a friend of the family had to have his new car replaced and still ...

    I've done 60,000 in my Audi A4 1.8T Quattro Sport since July 2002 and apart from the odd rattle that has developed (they're not as well built as we're led to believe) the car has been great.

    It's less common than a BMW and has better levels of comfort and style.

    But, it doesn't drive as well as a BMW - Rear wheel drive just can't be bettered for fun, but, it does feel safer.

    I would however stress that this engine is an absolute cracker if tweaked. The 150 & even the newer 163 & 187Bhp ...
