Good Points: Exquisite musical performance. Elaborate traditional staging.
Bad Points: Might be hard to relate to for modern folks. Von Otter is a bit feminine as Octavian.
General comments: A wonderful Der Rosenkavalier production... Kleiber doesn't let down. The musical performance (orchestration and singing) is wonderful. Lott has fine comic timing... Her Marschallin seems a bit older than the role specifies, but wonderfully acted nonetheless. Bonney is a dream Sophie. Von Otter is a fine Octavian and her Mariandel scene is one of the funniest around.
For non-traditionalists, tho, this may be a bit stiff. The presentation of the rose is beautifully sung but statically acted. Blame it on the director, I say. Still a great DVD to have.
