Good Points: It's a bank account

    It does what it should

    Bad Points: Extortionate charges.

No contact with local branch when you phone.

    Many branch closures

General comments: I had a Clydesdale account for about 10 years. Over the last few years it has become more and more apparent that the Clydesdale couldn't give a hoot about customer service.

The number of times I have faced huge double charges levied by the Clydesdale is appalling. They operate a stone age system whereby if you are 1p over your iimit they charge you over £20.If you don't rectify it wihtin 3 days it's another £20. Well, these charges I suppose are your own fault. However, the sting comes the following month when they apply a second "service charge" to your account, which always seemed to be simple punishment for daring to go over your limit. This charge again is over £20. Guess what happens if your short that month? yep, they take their fees, put you over your limit and start the whole sorry circle off over again. For anyone who might end up over their limit this is one account to avoid like the plague.

It is nearly impossibel to speak to your branch now as all calls are fielded to a call centre where they don't have the power to do anything worthwhile, even if they agree with you or try to help.

    Very frustrating.
The end came for me when they closed my local branch, and sent me a letter about 3 weeks later informing me of that and wondering if I had any queries.

Yes I did - How do I choose a new bank?

For the old fashioned fuddy duddies of the world the Clydesdale Bank current account is perfect. Never mind voice-recognition, passwords, thumbprints and iris- recognition, I can go into the branch and someone who went to school with me will say: 'hello Jill'. They may also say: 'hello Jill, here are the extortionate bank charges when you went overdrawn by £1.50', but basically I am too lazy to go anywhere else! Also, when you get into serious debt, they can be quite helpful.
