    Smile current account online

Smile have been the best for years but are seriously losing it. Something musty have changes as the whole attitude has altered.

    1) Stupid stupid card readers make nearly every online transaction a nightmare. You can barely read the screens on these wretched devices and mistakes result in your online access being closed off. The inconvenience outweighs the benefit of online banking

    2) call centres used to be unnecessary as everything could be done online and secure emails were answered politely, constructively and promptly. Of course if you are locked out you need to phone the call centre to get unlocked - oh look, a premium line with a massive queue whenever you call and no indication of queue time.

    3) agreed overdraft facilities have been reneiged on and changed unilaterally after several years. Obdurate attitude to complaints has replaced the former courteousness.

the website is easy to use but that is the only benefit to banking with Smile. Costs of the Smilemore account have been creeping up and interest on savings is not competitive even in the existing market. I have banked with Smile for 10 years and have found their Customer Services team to have considerably degraded in recent years. Last week they cancelled my debit card because they have accidentally 2 new card with incorrect expiry dates despite my having an existing card which was valid f ...

In general, ALL British banks discriminate. My wife and I moved to the UK recently, coming from the Netherlands - yes, one of the European fellow-countries. Unlike anywhere else on the continent (fact!), when applying for an account, all British banks will ask you for your nationality and country of birth. If it's not British or the UK, you will ALWAYS have to go to a branch with a bucket full of ID, even if you have lived in the UK for many years. This is against the right to equal treatment th ...

I recently opened a smile account and although the process was easy and simple enough it wasnt the best account to go for, all the accounts are opened online. There is a card reader which isnt mentioned at all when opening account and is posted to you with all your documents. I dont mind using the card reader but it does seem a bit silly to have it with whenever you are banking just in case you need it. I wanted to consolidate all my debts into one payment and applied for a loan with smile howev ...

Smile bank is outstanding for customer service, terms and conditions and value for money. It is even better to know it is a co-operative with ethical policies.

The overdraft facilities are great and flexible, I can do everything online and the response from customer service is always speedy and helpful.

    I think it is brilliant.

I've used smile for between 5 and 10 years now. Until fairly recently their service has generally been excellent. I have several current accounts, savings, and a credit card acc. Things have started to slip though - they've gradually increased the price of their premium current account, and customer service is nowhere near as good as it used to be. One thing I found hugely frustrating is there is no facility to download statements, or to import them into financial packages. You can only print ha ...

Have always experienced great customer service with Smile - and I've been with them for 10 years. My only complaint is that the functionality on their website should have really come on in this time but it's developed very little... for instance, just being able to search for past transactions without trawling through endless statements would be a huge improvement.

Smile make it so difficult to find their address on the website and they don't show a running total of my balance which I would think is a primary basic requirement of customers. I've contacted them several times about this and despite their claims of how they respond to customers wishes and opinions, they've done nothing. Who would not want a running total shown clearly? I have to get a calculator and work out how they arrive at the current balance. I really cannot believe they continue to do ...

I used to love Smile Internet Banking until they got totally paranoid recently and started requiring that you carry a special gadget with you for setting up transactions, and they call you for 'suspected fraud' for next to no reason - like 8 small transactions in a day buying records at Amazon, when there's ample record of similar transactions in the past. Before this, they were the easiest, safest, most convenient service around. Now they're just a pain. Looking for something better.

Very good response from smile internet banking whenever I have a query - either by phone or secure message.

Not very good for checking history of transactions - e.g. for Standing orders or direct debits there is no way to know when they started - you have to trawl through old statements.

    Quite like the security measures.

I have had a smile internet account for many years. The website is easy to use and whenever I have needed to discuss any aspect of my account I have found the people friendly, well-informed and helpful. I would thoroughly recommend this internet bank.

Yest more trouble with them of late. Last year, they forgot to order me a replacement debit card when my old one expired, so i was stranded without one. This year, I called them up 3 weeks in advance to make sure that my new replacement debit card would arrive with me by 30th June when I would be on holiday in New York - last thing I wanted was to be stranded with no debit card.

Needless to say, my replacement debit card did not arrive on time, despite Smile being asked 3 weeks before to pro ...

trying to arrange a loan, it's been approved, but no one knows if they've recieved the signed papers sent 5 days ago, or how long it might actually take for the loan to appear; someone randomly phoned me to make sure everything was alright with the loan, which they could apparently see on their screen. I couldn't see it, so the loan wasn't alright, but they couldn't help me with that, couldn't transfer me either, gave me a phone number that didn't work, I tried another number, that person couldn ...

Service has gone downhill in past year or so. Rude and unhelpful support staff. Pity - used to be very good and I liked their ethical stand but let down by their own (probably) poorly trained staff. Leaving Smile internet bank after 5 years. Shame.

I have been with Smile Internet Banking for 3 years and can't fault them. I have never had a problem with Direct Debits (including paypal) or standing orders. Setting up bill payments is very easy, they have pre supplied details for most utilities, credit card companies etc. which have always worked for me. One thing I am surprised more people haven't mentioned is that they give you a dividend twice a year for banking with them, I got over 60 pounds in 2008 and now I have moved my mortgage to th ...

Had a dreadful experience with Smile Internet Banking, when my card was fraudulently used - made to feel I was the criminal! Charged me 25 pounds for being 12 over my overdraft for one day. Pathetic rates on savings and ISAs. Takes days now for them to respond to queries. It seems they have cut back on frontline staff.

This feels like an intenet banking experience from five years ago. Smile seem to have made litle investment in their software and you still can't download statements.

Clear and easy to use website. Very few errors, and when they are pointed out, they are corrected immediately. They have both a good email and telephone service for any query or service required. They moniter my accounts for any unusual activity and either email of detail of the activity and /or block the activity.
