The first thing i would say about Aurora Borealis is prepare to be disappointed. There is never a guarantee that you will see them, and adverse weather conditions get in the way - alot.
We went to Reykjavik for the weekend, and seeing the Northern Lights was one of the main reasons. We pretty much planned our whole trip around going on a Northern Lights expedition on the Friday night. This was cancelled at the last minute due to poor weather conditions, with a slight chance that it could take place the following evening. We were left disappointed and our carefully planned weekend very much unorganised.
The following evening we did indeed set off in search of the Northern Lights. Be warned there is A LOT of standing around in the cold, looking at something which may or may not be the beginnings of a fantastic light display (but usually was a cloud, plane, your eyes starting to go a bit funny...)
Luckily we had a fantastic guide, who had dedicated her life and her study to the pursuit of the Northern Lights. When all the other guides were giving up and going home (after a good couple of hours of driving around Iceland, looking for suitable conditions) ours was not giving in. Eventually we got to see them, very different to how i imagined - looking like a green sunset in the distance (rather than the green and pink swirls overhead that TV had lead me to believe i would see). It was beautiful, but over pretty quickly. Nevertheless we all heaved a collective sigh of relief at having seen them.
Then when we were finally on our way back to Reykjevik the bus pulled over again, and we saw a similar sunset effect, but this time moving and bending across the sky, again in the distance but lasting for a much longer time and clearly moving. It was amazing and thoroughly worth the wait.
So for those of you going in search of the Northern Lights i would say:
1. Prepare to be disappointed
2. Prepare to be COLD
3 Be aware that it might take more than one attempt as you cannot time their appearance
4. Don't try and take pictures (unless you are an accomplished photographer with specialist equipment) they won't come out anyway. Some people were even trying to take them using a flash - v annoying and of course no chance of them coming out.
5. Try not to have any preconceptions of what it will look like
It is such an amazing sight when you do finally see them, but it can be a struggle getting there!

It is a beautifull scene the northern lights as when i went to see it i could not believe my eyes, it was an amazing view, and i can still see it now in my imagination. I wish i was still there gazing away dreaming in the contrast of colours i coud see. And feeling relaxed as i watched. It is the perfect scene for romance or just for a easy and exiting holiday. I would encourage any and evey one to visit and know they will enjoy their experience!!!!!
