I bought full UK RAC cover before christmas last year when I was due to do a long distance journey - just to be on the safe side. Had an rta just outside Colchester, thank goodness we were ok - also relieved that someone would come to get us.

Could I get through to the RAC switchboard. No. Not at all. Kept trying. No one answered. Eventually my mate (whose dad had Green Flag cover) called them up to see if they could sort us out. Had to pay £45 but they gave us a free yearly policy with that. Call centre very helpful, sent a guy out to us within 35 mins (not bad for that time of year.) Meanwhile I saw an RAC van parked up at the next service station. Fat lot of good that was.

What a brilliant experience! My annpoying Vauxhall Astra Twin Top roof would not close. The people I spoke to at RAC were brilliant - told me when to expect the patrolman, made sure I was safe and checked to see if they could help me fix the problem over the phone.

When the patrolman came out he arrived on time and fixed it really quickly, telling me what he was doing, why he was doing it, how to do it myself if it went wrong again. Brilliant!

    I love the RAC!

RAC's customer service is a disgrace. I have just had a full 12 month membership removed from my bank after cancelling two months ago. having returned from holiday to find the money removed I called them only to be told we have gone past a 14 day cooling off period?? we were under the impression the policy had been cancelled when we called them in June and had no communication from them until they took money from our bank. They are now asking me to prove I made the call back in June!! This comp ...

Where shall i start? I was unluky to have had a problem with my car whilst in spain recently. The assistance that came with the car was RAC's top cover.Thats a joke to start with. To cut a very long story short the car was picked up and was finally asigned to be sent back to the UK after a lot of phone calls.Back in the UK now chasing RAC when car will be delivered. Today 21st Aug. Waited all day no calls from RAC. Chased again then told car wont be delivered until tomorrow. No one in RAC can he ...

I have just tried to get a refund of 10 months worth of membership/ breakdown cover from the RAC only to be told that they don't do refunds outside the cooling off period.

I was renewing my insurance and they refused to negotiate a better deal so I hit the comparison website and saved £80 with the AA.

I just want to say don't use the RAC they were not helpful at all, I had to wait 20 minutes to be told the news above and was blamed for not reading the terms and conditions. This is a majo ...

I got my bank statement this month and with things being a bit tight I started questioning why the RAC were taking money from my account.

I gave them a call and apparently I have a membership thats been running for a few years at an old Flat I had in Glasgow.

I explained to them that I have no record of signing up for this and that they have the incorrect address. They then agreed that they would refund me last years membership money within 7 days and took my new address details.

    A week lat ...

Horrendous! was left on a main road on my own and pregnant for five hours as the RAC control centre forgot to tell the patrolman where I was. Desperately needed a wee but not able to go on side of road added to discomfort. Rang from my mobile five times to ask where patrol was with my mobile battery dwindling only to keep being told he was on his way. When patrol did arrive was very rude and refused to tow to garage (which would have been shut by now anyway) as he said my cover did not include a ...

I have been a member on-and-off of all of the major Breakdown Assistance companies (AA, RAC, Green Flag) and I feel I have been lucky that on the odd occasion I have had need of them they have been pretty prompt and efficient. I am currently with the RAC, and have "personal" cover. ie. it is ME that is covered in the event of a breakdown NOT a specified vehicle! This was incredibly useful 3 weeks ago when my son (newly passed his test!) managed to destroy his runabout! Fortunately he was not inj ...

My father in law took out an RAC Breakdown Cover policy whilst shopping in Meadowhall for himself and his son ( my husband). He told the RAC representative that we lived at different addresses but that if his son broke down they could take it back to his house as it was only a 5 minute walk from where we live. The representative said this was not a problem and that we could go onto a joint policy to save money. What a total lie! Consequently we have just found out that we have paid for 1 years c ...

I am not an RAC customer but unfortunately had to use them recently as my hire car broke down and they had the contract with them. Our car broke down in the country side, moreorless in the middle of nowhere. We didnt have a phone reception and the hire car didnt have the breakdown details so a friendly passing motorist gave us a lift to the nearest town and we went back to the hotel to get the breakdown details. So we then phoned RAC and the fun started. They told us they wouldnt go and colle ...

Had a bad experience of RAC on 31 May on M74. Called them at 5.22pm and did not receive assistance until 8.40 pm. Explanation given was high volume of calls due to hot weather and that there was a significant slow moving queue of traffic and that the patrol van was stuck in the queue too. This was clearly untrue as we could see the end of the queue of traffic about half a mile away and the traffic was moving. There was another broken down car a few metres from us and that was picked up a 2 hou ...

I had (I have now cancelled) the RAC maximum cover as I have several classic cars and travel through Europe a lot, over £250 a year. This is not the first issue I have had with them but it will be the last. I had a major engine failure and despite informing them where the car needed to be taken when they finally arrived 2 hrs later in a patrol van they said they would take the car take the car to a local location temporarily while they waited for a proper recovery truck. When we got to ...

Breakdown cover is a worthwhile investment and RAC membership is as good as it gets! I and my family have been RAC customers/members for the past 15 years. We tend to look after our cars and drive them with a reasonable degree of care and fortunately make few demands on the service. However, on the occasions we have called out RAC, the response has always been prompt and very helpful.

We have been with rac for eleven years and have had no problems, recieving very quick responses from them, being taken home when the fault couldnt be fixed and having a fault tempererally fixed to get us home but that was using actual rac patrole men. last year when we got a puncture near the end of a dual carrage way and so called out the RAC but they sent one of their contractors out who came and did the wheel change but unknown to us they seemed to damage the sill on the car with the trolley ...

Had a problem with my alarm and RAC Breakdown Cover came out to me very quickly and soon solved the problem even though it wasnt a breakdown as such. Be vary wary of buying from other less well known companies as they just contract out to local garages which will not give you the same level of service and little comeback if they mess up your car. Also if you read the small print most charge you an excess.
