Good Points

Excellent drive and specification for a car in its class. very powerful considering only a 1600cc. Excellent looks with a few minor modifications. Superb interior/dash layout. Completely reliable.

Bad Points

Engine has bad flatspot at around 80mph when standard, must be chipped to lose this. Rust around tailgate and sunroof common. Not too easy to find performance parts (fensport only major stockist).

General Comments

what a car the Toyota Corolla Gti-16 is! I had one of these after a peugeot 205 gti and it killed it in every way. Comfortable, smooth drive, fast as you could wish from a hot hatch (would ease past golfs, 205's, astra gte's etc). handling was great once it had been lowered 40mm and 15's fitted. Inside the seats are superb and the dash layout puts other cars to shame. Outside the car is not the prettiest, but by removing all stickers and lowering it, plus tinting the windows, the car looks the part. I would recommend a full s/s system and JR induction kit, coupled with a fensport chip - then you've got a car with a 16 sec quarter time - not bad for a 1600cc N/A!

allo there geysers. I've got an aussie sx corolla with the same 4a-ge and I've got to say it's the best 1.6L I've ever driven (admitedly - haven't driven a 1.6 VTEC). My car has been 100% reliable and loves to rev out to the limiter. Excellent fun to drive and very cheap to run. A pearler

I've had my Corolla GTi-16 for 6 months and not had one problem with it and I drive it hard! I've beaten BRM Rovers, Golf GTi's,Renault 19 16v, Fords etc. I even had a go at an Audi S2, I didn't win but I put up a very good fight up to 110 mph! I have put Nissan GTi-R 15" wheels on (black) and tinted the top of the rear lights. I love it. The only problem, like you said is the rotten sunroof, which doesn't leek. Well done!

I have the fastest gti 16 around my area, it has a fennsport superchip, k and n induction kit, uprated pistons, full black leather interior, mirror tints, black 17" momo arrow custom wheels, did have venoms, lowered, full oval exhaust system, splitfire spark plugs and leads, skimmed head, full in car system this car is fast, gets the looks and is an all rounder above all it pulls and impresses the women!! thats on friday and saturday night outside chicago rock cafe!!

The corolla GTI (4age) is a mighty fine and very underestimated hot hatch from the land of the rising sun. I now own 'arry's' GTI from which this review stems and have done for 2yrs. One of only 2 in UK in special factory black/switch paint, 0-60 7secs, 140mph 160bhp+loads more mods, former Alpine sponsored SPL car. Now on 140k miles and only problem was a crank pulley/driveshaft. Trim level, mpg, performance, image/reliability all excellent. Rare car, sunroof/tailgate/arches are weak spots, but the 4AGE 7.2k redline makes it a very capable motor. Puts modern GTI's to shame. My reason for selling it shorlty..Nissan Pulsar beckons. Buy a 4AGE and you wont be disappointed.

Futher to my corolla GTI review (above) That is the picture of my car I now own and Arry used to own. A v.Limited Ed AE92. Many thanks

How much did every1 fetch their GTi-16. Can a 18 year old be insured on this car?

  9. Matty. on 4th Jun 2003

I took out a policy on a heavily modified GTI-16 (see mine and arrys commments above) when i was 18 3yr ago...looking at a group 14-15 car depending on mods etc. prob cost you £1800.

And my pic of my corolla at the top of the page has disappeared!!! doh!!

Just sold my corolla this week for a GTI-R...

hard to get a good one now (people keep tinkering and messing them up)i used to have dolphin grey 1990 model these cars are beutifully made and engineered the later speck with the chequered seats and engine uprate is adequitely fast even by todays standards, mine was vandelised and repair was beyond economical sense , ive sold and drove a lot of cars and ive got to say its by far the best in its class for that era when you consider everything spec performance drive cost of ownership depreciation, only one gripe the bodies they rust like mad, this means i cant get a decent one for love nor money that hasnt been "BWAD BWOYED" up i wish i wish that toyota had followed the Audi route and galvanised the stupid things id still own one "I MISS IT SO MUCH" boo hoo sniff sniff, But i know, i know that in my heart of hearts theres some old geezer who bought one with his retirement and its done 12 miles and it lives in a heated damp free garage with carpets and some ferrari porn on the walls it never goes out in the rain and gets started and ran for 10 minutes in the morning and ten at night but before this he pours a nice warm cup of mobil 1 in the cam to prevent cam wear fom that silly overrevving choke

    oh i miss it so!

  11. duanedibbs1973 on 3rd Nov 2004

I got my corolla for £120 quid - it had 15in alloys and a full janspeed ex. It's an evil car which hates going slow.

  12. muscles72002 on 6th Nov 2004

The guy who brought his twin cam for 120 pounds where are you from? And what colour is your car? And how fast is it truthfully??

  13. duanedibbs1973 on 24th Nov 2004

Im from leicestershire which is were I got it from. It does 45 in 1st, 75 in 2nd, 115 in 3rd and I got up to 135 in 4th but then ran out of road. Its all black top 2 bottom.

  14. fradaja Rank: Sergeant on 26th Nov 2004

The gearing wont allow the car to do more than 135 - thats at around 7500rpm. I've done it downhill awwwwwwww never mind.

  15. Skell on 17th Nov 2005

I loved my Corolla GTi the drive is second to none at it handled so well I could get it sideways on any corner(front wheel drive) I didn't notice a flat spot and wouldnt change into third until id hit 60 in second. It had no mods no induction kit and often done 130mph standard, beat other corolla GTi's with plenty of mods. Sometimes if your real luck you just get a fast one. Still the best fun car I've ever had so under rated its untrue. If you've ever had one you already know!!
