Good Points

Speed and handling. Sexy but quirky looks. Luxury and performance normally only found in £50k cars.

Bad Points

As expensive to maintain as any car in it's class. Pretty thirsty if driven like most Alfa's :)

General Comments

My Alfa Romeo 164 3.0l V6 Cloverleaf car has pretty much everything: air-con, leather, electric everything, a 3 litre engine that sounds truly wonderful and has plenty of power. Electronic suspension (auto and sport), good handling and fine looks.

Must be maintained as per Alfa specs or this car will bite you! Ignore at your peril. Stay away from main dealers (unless they are enthusiastic and knowledgable about the 164) if you can find a good independent specialist in your area. Expect to pay £65 per hour labour at dealer.

All parts still available when this was written (2002) but Alfa parts can be double the price of the same part in a different box from a motorfactors!

things to look for when buying: Does the aircon work PROPERLY, check tyre for uneven wear (bushes need fairly regular replacement), check all electrical gadgets, make sure cambelt has been changed every 36k miles (plenty of horror stories available on the net for those who ignored this advice).

A truly wonderful car that deserves classic status in years to come.

24v models much improved over 12v.

An accurate appraisal of one of motoring's best kept secrets. More exclusive than a BMW, at less cost. While everyone else thinks Alfas still rust, those who know better smile.......

An excellent report on an absolutely awesome and fabulous car. I consider myself very fortunate to own one of these sublime rare beauties and everytime I get behind the wheel the driving experience just gets better and better!
The Alfa Romeo 164 - most especially the, without equal, 164 3.0 litre 24-valve QV Cloverleaf - is the motoring worlds "best kept secret".

Buy one of these and you will be one of only 393 people in fact much less as many didn't make it.
I'm on my second 12v QV and keeping an eye out for a reasonable 24v although I like the chunkier looks of the 12v.
These cars require more TLC than other cars of their Marque, but they repay that in kind with an addictive response that earns the car the nickname of 'Beast'
For unique experience just watch what happens when two cloverleaf owners pass on the motorway!

Thinking of a 24V 164 purchase - these comments have (I think) swung me in favour of the sleeper - can't wait to drive it!
