General Comments

I thought I'd give this Schneider dvd856 DVD player a try as it was well spec'd and the only one in Asda's. It's well built and region select is via the "8421" method (no macrovision hack). Picture quality seems good with no visible pixelation. VCD performance is also good. On the downside, the major gripe is that the sound level output (regardless of setting) is a lot lower than broadcast. So unless you've got a clever tv to compensate for this it's *very* annoying. Also it got stuck during the interactive game on the second dvd of Harry Potter. Also, the remote feels very cheap and could be layed out better. Given the limited time I've had it and the dvds I've tried there may be better ones out there e.g. the Daewoo DVG8000. I'll probably return mine. They're also quite hard to find!

By the way...the Deccavideo (PowerHouse) and Technika (Empire) models are no longer available.

I think the 856 is great for the money, but how do you do the region code?
