Out of pure necessity, I travel regularly on the Megabus between Aberdeen and Edinburgh. Up until very recently, I thought I was using Megabus out of choice on account of the cheap price. However, having recently had to book at the station and being charged £26.50, and already condidering £14 if booked online as 'mot that cheap', I thought I would look into alternatives, particularly as my last journey from Dundee was the third in as many months in a bus which, from front to back, stank of a mixture of urine, faeces, vomit.
I am disgusted to discover that there is no alternative to Megabus. Surprise, surprise, it has become extremely rare to find a fare less than £12 from Aberdeen to Edinburgh at reasonable notice, and would seem that the choice boils down to take it, leave it, or pay between 3 and 10 times more on the train.
As the main reason for my travel is work, being self employed, I need to find a fare that makes the journey worthwhile .. otherwise, I may as well turn down the job. So it looks as if for the foreseeable future, I will have to grin and bear it. I will be paying more than I'm happy to pay to spend 3 hours on an uncomfortable dirty seat in a travelling toilet. Oh yes, there is a toilet on the Megabus, but if that is where the smell is coming from, I'll hold on thank you very much.
So now i have to award points ... and i guess i'll be forced into being generous with a 1 out of 5.
