Unbelievably unreliable.

General Comments

On my Volvo S80 T-6, the electronic sensors have cried wolf so many times that the car has a "Needs Service" light on more often than not. Brakes have failed unexpectedly nearly breaking out our garage door as a result. Seals around moonroof have deteriorated so that the car sounds like the windows are down anytime the hard cover for the moonroof is open. Emission control light has malfunctioned at least 10 times requiring service. Biggest boo-boo happened when car went too far over a parking block, resulting in displacement of the radiator hose into the timing belt, resulting in disruption of the valve housing, resulting in engine replacement, resulting in a $5000 bill.

I find it interesting that this reviewer made the false claim that my review from Spring of 2000 was obviously written by a Volvo dealer, I've never even worked in the car industry, just a very pleased owner of a 2000 S80 T-6 that has been impeccably reliable. It now has over 30,000 trouble free miles and makes me feel special every time I slip into it for a drive. My previous car was a 1974 Volvo 144GL which was also very reliable, even as it aged. I expect the same from my S80.

Well, back to the critique of this review. I think this review is a farce based upon the impossible scenario that is presented. He claims he had $5000 worth of engine work done because the radiator hose was displaced into the timing belt when he pulled too far forward over a parking block. I just inspected my radiator hose and can see this scenario is impossible. My guess is that the reviewer is parroting the experience of another S80 owner that had their electronics vent tube foul their timing belt and resulting in expensive engine damage. Some S80's had a vent tube that extended too low, I've heard that dealers will trim to the proper length without charge. But it is impossible for this to be caused by a radiator hose and I know if I had a $5000 repair bill I would complain to Volvo and I would know what the cause of the problem was. The fact that Anosmic thinks the radiator hose was involved indicates this was not a first-hand experience.

As for his problems with deteriorating door and sunroof weather stripping, hello, he lives in New Mexico! Doesn't he know to put uv protectant on rubber seals? I live in Washington and my seals still look like new and have no problem keeping the car completely dry and comfortable through our worst rain storms. If you live in the desert, or at high altitudes, extra precautions must be taken. I suppose he is new to New Mexico and wasn't aware of these things which are true no matter what kind of car you drive.

As for the "needs service" false alarms, my car has done this five or six times but all you need to do to find out if it's a real problem is ignore it until the car is restarted, if the warning hasn't gone away it probably needs to be checked out. I've never felt this was an issue, cars didn't used to have these advanced warning systems so as long as the oil pressure, temperature and fluids are normal, it doesn't bother me the few times it has happened as it resets itself the next time I drive it.

It's ironic, the person who falsely accuses me of being a Volvo dealer proceeds to relay a story that could not have come from a first-hand experience.

I could not disagree more with this review.
I leased a 2000 S-80 T6 for 3 years and I must admit that it was the best handling car I have ever owned.
The braking was superb, the turbos never gave us any problems and the sun roof always worked well+ Great gas mileage.
The only problems we had were with the 6-changer in-dash CD player...It would periodically eat the CD's and stop working, this required the total replacement of the radio unit, two times...under warranty.
We had a front end problem with the A-frames and ball joints which required the replacement of both sides...under warranty.
The only thing I can say about this reviewer is that he must have gotten a lemon, which happens, even in the best of cars.
    I would lease another one.
