I joined GMX 1 year ago and before moving to it from my other web mail based account I have tested it to the extreme. I have been working in ICT for over 10 years and based on my knowledge and ability to test products I can say I am very happy with this service.
It has had its teething issues, but all webmail has its teething issues, I know people sick of trying to join Gmail only to find they have to have a sill email address such as joebloggs123 just to get there account. Yahoo people are annoyed at the BETA tests always going on in the upgrades, HOTmail people are fed up with the basic look and unreliable service.
So basically when a service is free you take you chances and roll with them, I would say try GMX before you commit, for me it worked.

I second your comments, I joined GMX 12 months ago. I am using Yahoo at the moment and I to have worked in ICT for about 15 many years now and conducted many rigerous tests including its spam filter abilities and loading speeds.
I am personally very happy with it, the right stuff gets in the wrong stays out and the interfaces is very nice and smooth.
All the factors that people complain about which are related to speed and interface have many things that should be considered.
What browser, what graphics card, what processor they use etc. Almost everything is slow if you use IE as your browser.
I would happily say yes try GMX its very clean and fast in my experience.
