My girlfriend gave me a Beeman GT 650 for Christmas. I wanted a pellet gun and was surprised that she purchased a Beeman. The ultimate reason for the purchase was to control a group of squirrels that had invaded the attic.
I didn't know what to expect with the Beeman. For the last 20 years my hunting has been exclusively by shotgun or medium rifle, 30-06.
I've been very impressed with the GT 650, especially considering that its at the lower end of their product line. It took me a while to sight it in and break it in. I can see how that can be frustrating for the unexpecting airgunner. We actually sighted it in for 50ft instead of the 10meters from the factory. Its a much more useful distance for hunting.
Now that its broken in and sighted in the gun is excellent at squirrel control. Given its modest power and size, mastering it takes a lot of practice and some plain old trial and error. I had to learn how to hold a gun all over again. The trigger also takes some getting used to because its fairly stiff. At 6' 235lb I'm not a small guy and I thought it took a pretty hefty squeeze. However, its loosening up as the gun continues to break in. Its heft will quickly identify those with poor technique on the trigger.
I have also found that those expensive Beeman pellets tend to be more difficult to shoot accurately than the plain old Daisy wadcutters. With its modest power, drop affects those heavier pellets a lot more than the lighter ones. I actually kept a notebook of pellet weights and old targets to compare drop at different distances.
At the end of the day, I've pulled about 15 squirrels out of the yard in 4 weeks and the attic is quiet. Mastering squirrel hunting with this gun has been very rewarding. Its a lesson in patience and practice. For the first time I find myself thinking about things like wind and drop which you don't really do with a shotgun or .30-06.
For squirrels, I've used a both body shots and head shots with success. The furthest clean kill has been about 75 ft. Most occur within the 30-60ft range. Right now my pellet of choice is the Daisy Maxspeed target or the Gammo pointed pellets. Those two pellets have virtually identical trajectories in my gun.
Ultimately, there is not much more I could ask for out of a combo package (rifle and scope) that retails for about $150. Its handsome, cheap and really effective a quieting the attic.
I've enjoyed it so much I'm now looking at some of their more upscale guns like the R-9.
