The 1st incarnation of BMW's compact crossover SUV has been dished multiple times by motoring journalists. It has been said that its ride is too hard and its interior fittings too cheap, however in this review I will tell you my opinion, from everyday use of this vehicle.
First of all, the X3 is a great family car, and it accommodates 5 people easily. We recently took a 200 mile trip across Europe and after 4 to 5 hours in the passenger seat, didn't have any aches or pains. However, when we were zooming down the motorway, there was some wind noise present, thanks to the roof rack, but this was drowned by some music from the excellent speaker system and BMW's business CD radio.
To drive it is magnificent. It comes close to being the ultimate driving machine,(in its class) and handled great on the exceptional European mountain roads, however, most people will drive the X3 in town, and I am pleased to say that there, it delivers well too, with a respectable smooth ride in low speeds and responsive steering.
My favorite point of the X3 is that unlike an X5, it isn't large and thirsty, but handles city roads beautifully, while achieving from 25 to 40 mpg. It is a great purchase and definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a car in this class.
