Even in this age of pre charged pneumatic rifles, and the formidable accuracy their recoiless shooting action affords even a rank novice shooter, there are still a few spring rifles that can match and outshoot them in the right hands. The Weihrauch HW77 underlever spring piston air rifle is the top rifle of them all. This magnificent rifle has been in-production since the mid 1980s and set the accuracy standard all other air guns had to meet. It gave birth to HFT and proved so accurate there was nothing to match it on the competition circuit for years. If any air rifle deserved the title "Air Gun Of The Millenium" It has to be this one, and not that ugly, breakdown-prone Theoben Rapid 7. I have just purchased a .22 full length version with an ambidexterous-stock from Hull Cartridge via my local gunshop; (I'm a Left-Hander!)after being frustrated to hell with PCP rifles jamming up with a bit of grit in the field and leaking air like the flimsy, overpriced junk they are. First impressions are very favourable. This is beautifully finished production work throughout; with a satin-smooth Beech Stock in a very pleasing grain, with white and black spacers at the butt and grip-cap. Blueing is deep and lustrous. Cocking is smooth and there is plenty of room to access and load a pellet into the breech. One word of caution here. There is no TX200 type Bear-Trap safety device to keep the underlever from snapping back and amputating your finger and thumb, other than the safety catch. It should have one but, it doesn't! So keep your hand on the cocking lever during the loading action. This is my one reproach of what is in all other respects a beautifully designed rifle. And from the box, it gets straight to the business it was designed for. Shooting pellet after pellet with utterly flawless, precision accuracy. I've mounted a Bushnell SCOPECHIEF 4-14X50 AO scope on mine and the pellet of choice is H&N Field & Target Trophy. With this combination I soon had it hitting a sub quarter-inch group out to 40 yards, and within a 2-pence piece at 50! That is all the range and accuracy I need for rabbit hunting on my permission. My HW77 will recieve a tuning, courtesy of a highly respected air rifle tuner in the early new year 2011 and that's going to make this rifle just about perfect. If you have the skills to shoot a spring rifle correctly or, are prepared to put a bit of work in on learning and developing correct technique, this rifle will reward you in ways far beyond what a lifeless, soulless PCP rifle ever will. The only regret I have with the Weihrauch HW77 air rifle, is that I didn't buy one years ago!
