Sophisticated, smooth, broad power band, nice equipment level. Best with leather. Big boot. Rigid shell. Handles as well as we are likely to see a Vauxhall handle. 2.2 16v engine is a dream. Gearbox ratios suit it a treat.
Saloon style boot (but that's why the shell is so rigid). Colour sensitive, pick it carefully. Too many interior options. Gearbox is a bit baulky for fast changes.
(T98) Astra is probably Vauxhall's best platform. The hatch models are very nice, if not quite Audi quality, or as dynamic as a 306. Nevertheless, a good basis for a car, which to be fair Vauxhall has got very right. This is so much better than the Calibra ever was. Taught, smooth, feels like a real drivers tool. On a long journey it's fantastic. If Vauxhall had been doing this 6 years ago they would be SO far ahead. The cruise control, for the first time I have experienced, is MORE economical than my right foot! Leather suits the interior, so buy it. CD Multi changer is quite a good model, and the speakers on the stereo handle most music well. Its one of the nicest cars to drive every day. If you can manage with a coupe with good rear room, serious consideration should be aimed in this cars direction. It's a daily pleasure. And all the Tesco shopping goes in. Remarkable ;-) My practicality score is based on COUPES not other car styles.
